Church and Community, Growing Together?
For me, June is one of the best months of the year, although the weather can’t be guaranteed in this country. Nature could not be more abundant, the sun is at its strongest, it’s the month with the longest evenings, and the morning light arrives long before most people’s working day starts.
Growing in the hedge of the field next to Myddle Church are wild hop plants. Hops are graceful but vigorous climbers, climbing to a consider-able height, with tough square stems always twining in a clockwise di-rection. The strong aroma of their cone-shaped flowers both flavours and helps to preserve beer and it was one of the duties of churchward-ens in former times to brew Whitsun ale, not just to celebrate the Holy Spirit, but also to raise money for the church.
Hops are our native vines. The first thing Noah did when he stepped on dry land was to plant a vineyard. A vineyard, like a hop garden, was and is a valuable asset, which is the reason for King Ahab’s jealousy of Naboth (story found in the Old Testament - 1 Kings:21). Pruning is a vital procedure in viticulture, cutting out the old and tying in the new branches in order that they receive maximum air and sunlight to pro-duce fruit, just as teamwork and close partnership with Christ and each other are important for Christians.
Church and community are also best intertwined and a parish church should be at the heart of the neighbourhood and celebrate its life. Of-ten it is the only social organization to remain both in the inner cities and the remote countryside.
The sanctuary of the church is a sign of God’s presence, but the nave (centre) and the churchyard equate to the inner and outer courts of the old temple, where people used to meet and converse. The nave was once the village hall and in remote places should still be so. The nave was the inn for the drinking of Whitsun ales, theatre for mystery plays
June 2018

and a market place, and the vestry or porch was often the school. Christians should be innkeepers and offer hospitality to all and sundry. Hemp is a close relative of hops and this plant can be a beneficial med-icine and an ingredient of paper and building materials, but also a dan-gerous drug. A church or faith community can likewise be of great ser-vice to the locality or alternatively become a perverse sect, twisted in on itself, concerned only with self-preservation.
Perhaps we should be using this Hawaiian prayer: Father of all mankind, make the roof of my house wide enough for all opinions, oil the door of my house so it opens easily to friend and stranger, and set such a table in my house that my whole family may speak kindly and freely about it. Amen Adam

“Behaviour and attendance are of a very high standard. Pupils live out the school’s Christian values, ‘Growing, learning and living in the love of God”. Parents spoken to were overwhelmingly
positive about the school and your leadership. Pupils and Parents welcomed the extensive curriculum, which offers pupils
of all ages numerous indoor and outdoor experiences. The forest school is especially popular and contributes to the
consistently high outcomes achieved in science.” Ofsted report July 2017

Myddle Cof E Primary School and Nursery
We are nearing the end of a very busy half term which started with our Y5/6 pupils visiting Arthog Outdoor Adventure Centre where they took part in gorge walking, orienteering, scrambling and rock climbing to name a few activities!
Well done to all of our wonderful Year 6 children who have now completed their SATs! You have all worked so hard and we are very proud of you all. Y2 pupils will also be completing some important teacher assessments this term. Our Schools Half Marathon pupils are doing really well building up their miles ready to complete their last mile at The Shropshire County Showground on Saturday the 16th of June. Here they will get the full event experience including race bibs, a fully marshalled route, music and a start & finish line gantry. As they cross the finish line they will be presented with their Half Marathon medal and t-shirt just like the adults will in the Shrewsbury Half Mara-thon the following day. We are looking forward to our whole school visit to Blists Hill Vic-torian Museum to experience life as a Victorian child after half term. Our Y6 pupils will be running an Enterprise Project for the next few weeks culminating in a stall at Myddle Fete following our Victorian theme. We are delighted to be celebrating the Royal Wedding with a gar-den party and picnic before our last week which is very busy with a non-uniform day to raise money for the NSPCC and PTA School disco! Our thanks to PCSO Sue Davies who has led a cadet scheme for our Y6 pupils who finished their course with a passing out parade!
