When I was a teenager, I drove a truck I was quite fond of: a 1998 Ford

Ranger. It was small, short, gray, and I had put bathroom carpet in the bed so I could safely transport my electronic piano and amp equipment to and from

gigs. I called it "The Gray Panther", because it was cool while being sort of funny at the same time. (When I started dating my wife in college, I had the

sneaking suspicion that she, being a farm girl and used to far manlier trucks,

was maybe a tad embarrassed to ride in it. But I digress.) I drove as carefully as a teenage boy is willing to drive, but I didn't really wash it or get regular oil changes. (I tried, but, you know.

Time is money.)

You see, it was a hand-me-down truck. I paid for everything like gas and oil changes, but I didn't pay for the truck itself. Sure, when I was 18 it was signed over to me and it was legally mine, but at the meager price of $1. I was-

n't hard on it, but I certainly took it for granted. It was mine, but I didn't deserve it. Then one day the ball joints

needed to be replaced.

I didn't know much about ball joints. I still don't, other than you don't want those to go wrong on your vehicle. What I remember is getting a routine check-up at my usual spot and having the guy walk up to me with a frown

on his face and a clip board in his hand. "Uh oh," I thought.

Yeah. Uh oh. Whatever he said about the repairs I didn't hear. I didn't know anything about cars and I still don't.

He could've told me there was a tiny leprechaun sabotaging my spark plug oil and I would've believed him. No, all I heard was the bottom dollar, the damage.

Funny how nothing will make you take care of your truck more than being forced to pay for it. I was in high

school, I had a part-time job making $7/hour, and I had just handed over three months of my salary to a me-

chanic. From then on, I drove more modestly. I washed it more. I never missed an oil change. I didn't even want other people driving it. Why?

Because I had earned it.

Is that why so many Christians speak recklessly, think filthily, and take it for granted that the church is there whenever they need it? There's no doubt in my mind that this is true. And there's no way to fix it, either. Not

without heresy. Thanks be to God that salvation is free through Christ's death and resurrection, but that's what's so hard to live up to. "You want how much for my eternal salvation? Nothing? That guy on the cross paid the en-tire bill?!" It's counter-intuitive. Everyone knows what a spoiled brat looks like, and everyone knows what integrity

is gained from working hard for something. But you can't earn your salvation, it's just given to you. For no reason. God spoils us. So I find there are two types of Christians: those who take care of the gift entrusted to them (1

Thess 2:4), and those who are double-minded (Jas 1:8), saying one thing and doing another.

Again, there's no work for salvation. Not to earn it, anyway. It's impossible to take ownership of your salvation because it wasn't up to you—it was up to Jesus. But He has tossed you the keys to your brand new life and said,

"Drive safely, listen to advice of your mechanic, park in the garage, and get an oil change every Sunday."

And with this car, there are no trade-ins. See you in church.

News from the Little Lambs of Jesus Preschool & Childcare Center

Hello from the Center,

Things have slowed down for all of us now that the Christmas "rush" is past. Preschool has had a few weeks off, all of our staff has had a few much needed days rest, and now we gear up for

a new year. Mrs. Farley and Ms. Sue are already planning new things for the preschoolers to help with the "winter blues". When the weather is bad and they can't get outside, you have to

come up with something to keep them happy.

If you missed the children's Christmas program this past month, you really missed something. The preschoolers sang their little hearts out and the Sunday school kids handled their parts beautifully. Many hours of hard work and practice

went into this. Special thanks to Dawn Martin and also the others that helped make this so special. It's very much ap-preciated.

In December, we had a Christmas dinner party for our staff. It was held at the church in the conference room. Dawn Martin and Susan Obert cooked, served, and cleaned up after us. They were busy and everything was delicious. We

played a game, exchanged gifts, ate, and shared lots of stories and laughs. It was a great way for us to celebrate and

show our appreciation to the staff. We are looking for 2 people to hire. They must be dependable, Christ and child lovers, eager to work with young chil-

dren and especially willing to stay with us for awhile. Turnovers in staff is difficult to deal with. We need stability for our children and other employees. If you know anyone who fits the criteria, send them up!!

Just before Christmas, our water heater went out. Never a good thing, but we got it replaced and all is well again. We

are looking into replacing the indoor lighting as many of the ballasts are bad. Trying to see which is more cost effective in the long run..... Replace lights or replace ballasts. Stay tuned.

We recently took donations for our "adopted" family this season. We received cookies, cases of water, and almost $150 in cash. Oh, the family we adopted? Our very own Albion department of public safety. They need our support and our

prayers. Mostly? We NEED them!!! Special thanks to Carol Locke for the plate of treats. They didn't last long. :) I also want to thank you all for the

prayers. Someone told me a short time ago that when we first talked about opening the Center, she was very appre-

hensive about it. She just didn't know if we could make it happen. I looked at her and told her that I was sure she was-n't alone. She went on to say that she prays DAILY for us and she is always waiting to hear what we have going on. I

look back over the past 3 years since we first opened our doors and I always know that it's a "God thing." Yes, many of us work hard to keep it going everyday. But, it's truly through God that any of it happens. So, keep praying. God hears

you, he really does!

In Christ, Jenny

Open Saturdays

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gently used, clean kids clothes sizes 0-16

We accept donations of good, clean,

children’s items. Thursdays 9-11am, and Saturdays 10am-2pm.

Roving Reporter The Friendship League hosted an Advent meal for their December meeting. There will not be a

meeting in January. The next one will be February 14.

Thanks to all who donated food or helped in any way with the Christmas Food Baskets for the

needy. 50 baskets were given out and the recipients were very thankful. We heard a lot of “thank you”, “Merry Christmas”, and “God Bless you”.

Community Carols: the Sounds of Christmas was well attended even though the weather was

not good. The St. Paul handbell and occasional choirs were at their best.

The Children’s Christmas Program was very nice. It’s nice to hear and see the birth of Jesus

through the eyes of a child.

I hope you checked out and read some of the new Christmas books and music outside the library. I’ll leave them out for awhile, the Christmas season lasts for a long time. Puzzles will be coming

soon.

The Christmas Eve Candlelight Service was BEAUTIFUL!

I’m sorry to tell you that St. Paul part-time secretary, Anne Earl is retiring. She will be missed! Good

luck, Miss Anne, and God’s blessings. We love you!

A.I.M. for January is Canned Fruit/Juice & Soap. Please help when you can.

The Kid-to-Kid Shop is going great! They need donations. Their profits go toward buying layettes

for new babies.

After a warm and beautiful November we made up for it in December. The snow is nice, but not

when you have to shovel so much of it.

I hope you had a Christ-filled Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

-Lucy

Kid-to-Kid Shop

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

We at the Kid-to-Kid Shop are so excited! We’re making money! No surprise there. . . we’re doing God’s work and He always succeeds. We have enough in our account to be able to branch out

and help even more people. Our proceeds go to purchase layettes for new babies. Sandi Mauntel

does such a great job with these. I thank everyone who has supported us financially, provided clothing donations, and those much needed very kind words of encouragement. An extra special thank you to the “team”. You are extra special.

God has blessed us all! Joie Eddy
