WORSHIP STUDY LIVE
Pentecost Sunday
June 9, 2019
For Christians, Pentecost
occurs fifty days after
Easter. On that day, the
church celebrates the
happenings recorded in the
New Testament Book of
Acts, Chapter 2. In
Scripture, we read that the believers were filled with
the Holy Spirit and began to go into the streets
telling of Jesus to all those they met. Following
Peter’s sermon, many were baptized, and the church
began to grow. Because of this, we call Pentecost
“the birthday of the church.” - Rev. MaryJane Pierce Norton, UMC Discipleship Ministries
Pastor’s Column will return in August.
Julia Boesche will be traveling with a team of students and teachers from Oakton Community College to Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, mid-July 2019 to help the staff at Escuela Agapito Rosario Rosario, prepare classrooms and curriculum for the new school year.
Puerto Rican schools still need assistance from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Please keep Julia and her classmates / teachers in your prayers as they volunteer hours to the needs of the Puerto Rican public schools.

Is Sunday, June 16th
Karen Fitzgerald is in search of a Hospitality/Reception Committee Co-Chair. She will be traveling a lot in the next few months and needs assistance with coordinating special events. If interested, see Karen Fitzgerald or contact the church office.
If you have special projects (flyers, bulletins,
programs, registration forms, etc…)that you need
the office to assist you with, please submit them
at least a week in advance. This gives us ample
time to complete these projects along with our
regular weekly/monthly tasks.
Thank you! Pastor Irene

These newly planted ‘red’ geraniums add beauty to our front entrance and also serve as a reminder of Pentecost (June 9), that life-changing event so many, many years ago when some 3,000 people came to

GRACIE’S GOOD NEWS - JUNE 2019!
Spring may’ve been soggy, but we haven’t
bogged down at all, here at FUMC! Apr. 28,
Missions’ Audrey Nankervis, Joy Raczka,
Linda Trinite (R)1 and Laura Miller drove
to NIU, bringing all the fixings for a potato
bar – 80 potatoes, Laura told me! -- to feed the hungry
Huskies. They saw Pastor Rosa Lee, who spent time with
us here and now serves in campus ministry at NIU. May
Missions’ projects include Elgin District’s 2019 Annual
Conference Mission Challenge, to collect 2,000 stick deodorants and/or
disposable razors with guards, and, Noisy Change collections (L)2 for the
Bishop’s appeal to raise funds to suppor t two UMC camps/retreat centers -
- in Dixon IL, and in Williams Bay, WI. How much did they collect? See
Missions’ report elsewhere in this issue of the Messenger! And, Pastor Irene
Taylor was delighted our members responded to Pastor Paul Lawson’s appeal for 30 copies of
The Faith We Sing hymnal for his congregation at Grace UMC in Blue Island, IL, early in May.
Request fulfilled!
May 11, Holy Healing Practices members & friends –
Minister Tina Shelton, Walt Dibbern, Barb Kreski,
Melissa Nelson, and Jan Weber -- met at River
Trails Nature Center3,4 for a walk in the woods.
What a nice idea, to walk together in God’s creation!
The forest was greening, flowers emerging, the river,
high, I’m told. Afterward, Min Tina wrote a
reflection, reading, in part: “I can still see the river
flowing / Promises of new life and healing … still see the trees firmly planted / Casually calm and
strong … still smell the air, so wild and earthy like God intended … As if the river lives within me /
And I had forgotten / It’s been there all along.” Are you up for a trek in the woods? Let’s all go! A
lot’s going on at RNC -- a twilight hike June 14, fireside tales, Jul. 7, e.g. Check out the year’s
events at http://fpdcc.com/nature-centers/river-trail-nature-center/
For Mother’s Day, May 12, Linda Trinite and Karen Boesche created
dozens of fabric tissue holders (L),5 each with
a tag reading “The Lord bless you and keep
you; the Lord make his face shine on you and
be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face
toward you and give you peace,” -- Num 6:24
-26, attached with a pin-and-charm inscribed
“Made with love.” Thank you, Linda, Karen! Nancy Canova (R)
received one, as did all the moms present. (Nancy’s been recovering from surgery some months
ago; doesn’t she look well? She and Jeanne Fordham (far R) ushered, all May.)
Apr. 28, Nuevo Amanecer families and friends gathered with their
children for a special Dia del Nino/Mexican Children’s Day luncheon and
activities. Our Youth Choir as well as Gloria Ludwig a.k.a. Jewels the
clown, shown (L)6 with Dione L., Cecilia Hernandez’ niece, enter tained.
May 3-4, Serena & Sabrina C., Snortee & Headi H., Yadira L. and Mia Y.,
accompanied by Minister Tina Shelton and Jan Weber, took part in a
Confirmation Retreat at Camp Wesley Woods, in Williams Bay, WI.
“God has plans for you,” they heard. What might they be? Don’t you wish you had a crystal ball?
Final weeks of confirmation classes, led by Pastor Irene Taylor, continued through May. Pastor’s
eyes light up when she talks about these confirmands; she is enjoying their
Sunday-after-worship meetings.
Congratulations, graduates, including Snortee, parents Victor & Annie
Henderson, from middle school in Chicago; Serena C., Erica Lake’s
daughter, from Chippewa Middle School, Des Plaines; ‘MD’ Mark Daniel
Shelton, shown (R)7 with proud mom Minister Tina, from Morehouse
College, Atlanta, GA. A wealthy benefactor, Robert F. Smith, has promised to
pay all this year’s Morehouse graduates’ student loans. Wow! (A fuller list
including members’ grandchildren who are graduating appeared in the Friday
E-News, May 24.) Min Tina has had joy upon joy: daughter Noni was home
in time for Mother’s Day, from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
More good news: Cheryl Burke begins a new job as senior technical
delivery manager for Ensono (an information technology services provider),
July 1, and Annie Henderson is rejoicing as her parents have been cleared to come to the U.S. as
soon as they can get their visas. Both Cheryl and Annie said, “Thank you,
everyone who prayed for me!” You’re welcome! Snowbird Kim Darling
is back from FL; Jim & June Blue are at home and feeling
better; and, members were happy to see Donna
Chaney in worship; we’ve been praying for
her health, and her son Steve’s, too. Ana &
Nander Novaes (L) r eturned after a few
weeks’ absence due to illness – just in time to
lead everyone in singing happy birthday to Elaine Boxie
(R) and Headi H. (far R) after worship the same day. And Joey
Kozeluh has a new dog, Andy, 6 months old! Joey has pictures; ask
him to show you!
May visitors included Donna Catlett’s college friend Beth & her husband John
Schneider from Phoenix, AZ; and, Jeanne Fordham’s cousin Barb (R) &
husband Dave Lubbers, their daughter Amy & husband Brian
DePotty & their sons Owen & Sam. I spotted Gloria Camcam (L)8,
Chicago -- Grandma to Leo & Tess Rosete & children Levin &
Lethrese since she cared for their fir stborn, in worship with the
Rosetes the day Lethrese was liturgist, and soloist, too, for the first
stanza of the Youth Choir’s selection, ‘Cornerstone.’ Great day to
visit, Grandma Gloria! On Mother’s Day we greeted John & Audrey Nankervis’
son John & his wife Maura from VA; and not only Renee & Randy
Edmondson & son Matt, but also daughters Libby, home for the summer from
SIU/Carbondale, and Megan, with husband Ryan Pullman, who’s completed 5 years of service in
the Navy. The couple will move to Normal in the summer so Ryan can finish his schooling at ISU,
Renee tells me.
Happy birthday, Loryn Ankeny, Kathleen Barnes, Karen Boesche, Elizabeth Bowen’s
husband Kip, Ignacio Cruz, Walt Dibbern, Chad Fabian, Dorothy Lambert, Bob Raczka, Leo
Rosete, Linda Trinite, Rob (parents Lerrin & Prescilla Juarez), and Osmar (parents Rufino
& Gladys Leyva), all born in July, and happy anniversary, John & Anne Hardy, wed in July.
And did you hear Linda Trinite on May 26, saying she and Don were wed right here in our
sanctuary 36 years ago?
GRACIE’S GOOD NEWS!...continued
Page 11
More Church News from Gracie Prayers: We pray Karen Boesche’s hand heals fully and Walt Dibbern’s vision
clears, following their recent surgeries; that Ruth Gafrick is improving daily from
her recent hospitalization and that Char Stenstrom and Anne Roper recover fully at
home, after hospitalizations; and that Sandy King’s and Marian Seaholm’s (R)9
health stabilizes. Marian has a new address (available in the church office); we hope
she loves it. We pray God’s comfort and peace attend Barbara Flauter (in Hospice),
and Chris Reddington, suffering from end-stage cancer (at home, cared for by her
brother John Hardy & wife Anne). Peace be with their
families and caregivers, as well. We acknowledge with sorrow the May 23rd
passing of Harold Jaderborg, a member of our church family for 53 years,
and send our deepest sympathy to Lois, his wife of 73 years, and to Jean and
John, their children. We also express our sympathy to Karen Dwyer,
now of Wheeling, whose husband Stephen died May 6. Their children
Michelle and Michael also survive. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is
the death of his faithful servants.” – Ps. 116:15.
May 27, Memorial Day, as we gave thanks for past and current
veterans’ service to our nation and the world, veterans among us
came to mind -- quite a number, in our congregation and their
extended families, and including our own Pastor Irene Taylor, a
retired Chaplain of the U.S. Army Reserve. How fortunate we are
in having Pastor Irene here! Two messages came my way that
day, the first, from Phil Sharp, a Vietnam vet greeting other
veterans and vets-at-heart, reflecting on the passage of time and
grateful to still be able to raise the American flag above his home,
picturedà. The second message was this prayer shared with and by
a friend of our congregation, Alyce Ufheil: “Our Loving Father, God of comfort and unfailing
grace, we pray for those who mourn loved ones today. Surround them with your peace, strength,
and provision. Lord, protect those who continue to serve our country. May your faithful promises
be their shield. Amen.” And amen, amen, and amen, as Pastor Irene says often.
Pentecost Sunday is June 9, 2019. Some time ago, I overheard Don Ankeny recalling to adult
Sunday school participants that in 2017 he and his wife (Loryn) attended a church in Lake Geneva,
on Pentecost Sunday. There, church members dressed in red, recalling the tongues of fire that
descended upon the Apostles and filled them with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). They were all going
to stay after worship for picture-taking. What’s red in your wardrobe? Shall we do it too?
Thank you for sharing tidbits pictures with me for this column. E-mail items for next month’s
column to me at [email protected], or, give notes for me to Elizabeth Bowen, our
administrative assistant.
