“More to the Story”
Sometimes you can be so familiar
with something that you overlook a
very important detail that helps to
bring everything into better
perspective. The same can be said
about the narrative of Jesus birth.
The season of Advent is our time of expectation and
anticipation, where we intentionally celebrate
Emmanuel coming to rescue the world again.
Unfortunately many of our narratives overlook a
significant truth associated with the world the
Christmas story.
There is more to the story.
When Christ was born there was calm surrounding
Mary and Joseph as they celebrated the birth of the
Prince of Peace. However, shortly after others wept
due to an insecure political leaders sanction of death
for thousands of innocent children, following God
instruction for Mary and Joseph to flee to Egypt to
take refuge.
Embedded within the Christmas narratives of joy,
hope, peace, and salvation, is also the narrative of
refugees fleeing to another geographical location.
Refugees who receive hospitality, and protection
instead of death due to political conflict. As we
begin our Advent journey let us not stop at what we
think we know, but take time to examine the details
of the holy birth and all Jesus teaches us when he
enters the world.
Matthew 2:14-15 states, Then Joseph got up, took
the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt,
and remained there until the death of Herod. This
was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord
through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my
son.”
