THE MESSENGER Issue 215 October 2019 Website: www.northwoodsumc.org Follow us on: The Freshness of the Fall of His Holy Spirit! Temperatures are getting cooler! Pumpkins have arrived! Leaves are changing! Fall fishing has began! Oysters are about to arrive! Ya- hoo…the fall of the year must be upon us! It is an exciting time of the year. As we celebrate the “freshness” of the change of the season we pause to give our Heavenly Father thanks for His marvelous creation and for the work of His Holy Spirit among us all. The arrival of fall brings the start of another church calendar year that is full of events, like the opening of our Pumpkin Patch and the cele- bration of our “Harvest Festival” on Saturday, 19 October. The Harvest Festival is an awesome time to share His love with those in our com- munity! Free games, free hot dogs, free smores, and free popcorn, all provided to give back to those in our community with the hope of be- ing His witness and His love, trusting in His Holy Spirit to fall and move within the hearts of all who come! Speaking of being His witness, please remember our new vision statement, “We are a family, a friendly church dedicated to glorifying God by loving Jesus and making disciples who make disciples.” Pray for His Holy Spirit to fall upon us so that we grow deeper in our relationship with Him and as we do, we go wider in sharing His love with others with the hope that they too become His disciple. May all of us this fall be open to being His witness, willing to share our testimony of His presence in our lives. As a believer we each have a testimony of His work within us—the change His Spirit brought to our life, the renewed joy He brought, and the new hope He instilled. No two testimonies will be the same, but together we have a tremendous story to share about the power of Jesus at work within us. Speaking of testimonies, thank all who volunteered to share with us their testimonies during our worship services in September. I conclude this newsletter article sharing the following testimony, which happens to be a poem by Kevin Barth. The Freshness of the Fall of His Holy Spirit!

Temperatures are getting cooler! Pumpkins have arrived! Leaves are changing! Fall fishing has began! Oysters are about to arrive! Ya-hoo…the fall of the year must be upon us! It is an exciting time of the year. As we celebrate the “freshness” of the change of the season we pause to give our Heavenly Father thanks for His marvelous creation and for the work of His Holy Spirit among us all. The arrival of fall brings the start of another church calendar year that is full of events, like the opening of our Pumpkin Patch and the cele-bration of our “Harvest Festival” on Saturday, 19 October. The Harvest Festival is an awesome time to share His love with those in our com-munity! Free games, free hot dogs, free smores, and free popcorn, all provided to give back to those in our community with the hope of be-ing His witness and His love, trusting in His Holy Spirit to fall and move within the hearts of all who come! May the words bless you and remind you, we each have a story to share about the impact of His love. As we are reminded of this truth, may the freshness of the power of the Holy Spirit fall upon us!

How God Is Working In My Life—By Kevin Barth

The question was posed to offer up witness

To speak of how God has worked in life for me I interpreted that it illustrated a sort of personal reliance God doing the work, showing his presence for me to see.

I had no extraordinary conversion

No grand entry to the Christian way Church and faith had been a part of my being

The core of experiences and changes in life’s fray

I had not been enticed by the addiction or misuse of drugs No deepened times of rebellious acts

Only mundane stretches of common sinning As finds every man as his existence tracks

Having considered all I had done

I realized that in my earthly state of living That God indeed had worked in the common things

Miracles to be revealed through God’s giving

I thought of my wife, whom he sent to be by my side My sons whom he created from the love we shared

My Dad, Grandmother, and family that loved and cared for me As I considered these things my ignorance was bared

I pondered the sunrise and sunsets, the stars in the sky

Mountains and valleys and meadows to view Woods, forests, rivers, lakes, and oceans to explore

Creation’s wondrous colors of bright magnificent hues

I thought of friendship I’d known so many times Love I’d shared with people now and in the past

Work and school and times in between God’s many blessings just went by so fast

It occurred to me - God had been working in all these gifts It was my challenge to acknowledge his efforts in my strife

And in that time when I awakened from my slumber Ask – How am I working for God in my life?

The gospel I had been exposed to for so long

Was to be shared and was not just available to rely The Word of God was to be applied in my works

I had to see it as a servant with talents and skills to apply

Clearly God had always been working in my past His love and influence were always with me to abide

Now the question’s work focus changed – not on God but me! Would I be there for God now and forever - A disciple at his side?

To answer this question I had to get to work There were things to be done in the church

I had a mission beyond myself The purpose for my life no longer in search

Discipleship meant serving, using God’s gifts to proclaim his Word

Everywhere I was able, to give my resources toward the cause Bible Study, Singing, Sunday School, all church efforts

I was to do gratefully, even with my human flaws.

God’s work awakened me to do my own work Faith is not a one way street

Instead – God is always doing his work in us At some point, we must do ours to be complete!!!!

In HIS Love, Pastor Jerry

GODLY PLAY®

What is Godly Play®?

Children have an innate sense of the presence of God. The Godly Play approach helps them to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience through wonder and play. Based on Montessori principles and developed using a spiral curriculum the Godly Play method serves children through early, middle and late childhood. Our class is for ages kindergarten through fifth grade. This year we will work our way from creation to the wilderness, through advent, parables, lent, Easter, Pentecost the church and the saints. We share the stories in our circle, we wonder

about them, read them in our bibles, and work in response to what we learn. Come join us!!

COUNCIL ON MINISTRY

A huge thank you to all the leadership for your committed service to God and to Northwoods. Our charge conference on September 23 allowed me to reflect on all the great ministries and work we are do-ing to make disciples and the many miracles we have seen this year. As we lead our ministry teams to go "deep" in His word and "wide" in His community to share His love, we look forward to many more miracles to come. Keep praying and planning! Our next coun-cil meeting will be Thursday, November 21st.

BARNYARD BASH OCTOBER 19, 2019

12:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Barnyard Bash is the all-fun, no-fear adventure we're hosting at Northwoods UMC in conjunction with our Pumpkin Patch. We will need the help of our Northwoods UMC family to make this event a success! The following are just a few areas where we will need help. Keep an eye out for sign-ups or additional information on how to get involved.

• Pony Rides • Cow train rides • Bounce house • Pumpkin painting • Giant Kerplunk • Cornhole • hot chocolate, s’mores, and hot dogs • And lots more!!!

If you would like to volunteer or have questions, please contact Amy Whitsitt, 816-651-7978 or [email protected]. Nursery is available for all volunteers during this event. We are accepting donations of non-perishable items for our Food Pantry which serves Onslow County
