REV. NANSI HAWKINS, PASTOR (262) 965-2429

“Blessed are the Weak”

Lao Tzu, the Father of Taoism, was

a Chinese philosopher who lived

about 400 years before Jesus. He

wrote something that reminds me

a lot of what Jesus taught:

“When we are born,” Lao Tzu

wrote, “we are soft and weak; in

death we become stiff and hard.

The ten thousand creatures and

all plants and trees while they are

alive are supple and soft, but

when they are dead they

become brittle and dry. Truly,

what is stiff and hard is a

companion of death; what is soft

and weak is a companion of life.

Therefore, the weapon that is too

hard will be broken, the tree that

has the hardest wood will be cut

down. Truly, the hard and mighty

are cast down; the soft and weak

are set on high.”

Does that make you think of

Jesus’ teachings in the Beatitudes

In Matthew 5:3-11? “Blessed are

the poor… blessed are those who

mourn… blessed are the meek…

blessed are those who hunger

and thirst… blessed are the

merciful, the pure in heart,

the peacemakers, the

persecuted…”

It doesn’t make sense that the

weak are strong. And yet, that

is the wisdom of both Lao Tzu

and Jesus. That our ability to

bend in the strong winds, our

tenderness, our mercy: that

those are our strengths. And as

the roots fragile flower can

break stone, so our gentle

hearts can break the violence

and hatred of the world.

It doesn’t make sense; but it is

the way of God.

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Hawkins

We’ll be outdoors and

having a great time on the

west patio for worship! We

Order SCRIP August 5th

The summer months tend to be a bit of

a financial challenge for Emmanuel with

more people away on vacations or just

taking a break from their normal

routines. By ordering SCRIP cards on

August 5th, you will boost the Emmanuel

coffers without it costing you any extra dollars. Purchase

cards for gas, grocery stores, big box stores, restaurants,

etc. SCRIP cards will be delivered the Sunday after they

are ordered.

The Emmanuel UCC Rummage AND Bake Sale

is Coming SOON!

Saturday, August 25th!

The summer is flying by....that means there’s lots to do….

Donate! The Community Room is available now for rummage

donations. The Community Room is the first room on

the left in the Christian Ed wing. This temporary

storage space is for those donators that cannot store

items at their home or garage until the "official" rooms

open on August 5, 9:00 A.M. (We need these two

rooms left open for Family Promise, which will be July

29 - August 6.). Larger mouse-proof items can be put

in the garage.

Please remember that all items need to be clean

and in good condition. Items we cannot accept for

the rummage sale because they either tend not to

be good sellers and/or the charities who pick up our

left-over's will not take them:

mattresses

baby furniture

adult clothing

TV's that are not flat-screen

anything containing refrigerant (dehumidifiers,

etc.) must be in good working condition. if these

items do not sell, we have to pay to dispose of

them.

Baked goods or other homemade items can be

delivered starting Sunday, August 19th up through

the day of the sale. Use your best judgment on how

long they can sit. Please, no items that need

refrigeration and pre-package all items in a sellable

wrapping or container. BE SURE TO LABEL any

packaged items that contain nuts, peanuts or

peanut butter.

Sort! This can be done by anyone at any time after August

6th.. Just go to the Sunday School rooms anytime

and place any unsorted items by the sign for their

categories. If a category for the item has not been

created yet, grab a piece of paper for a sign and

start one.

Price and Display! Sunday, August 19th after church the items will need

to be brought from the donation rooms to fellowship

hall. Beginning Monday August 20th the items will

need to be organized, displayed, and priced for sale.

Sell, sell, sell! On Saturday the 25th we will need some early risers to

come at 6am to move the items from the garage

and set them up in the outdoor sales area.

Shifts beginning at 7:45 am until 4pm will be needed

for checkout.

Clean-up! On Monday, August 27th any items remaining, will

need to be packed for pickup.

If you have any questions, please contact the sale

organizers:

Kristen Voskuil at 262-244-0710 or

[email protected]

Ken Pike at 262-965-3226 or [email protected]

PLEASE SIGN-UP IN THE GATHERING AREA!

Thank you all so much!

Mission & Outreach

Singing Bowl FOR AUGUST... Many students get their primary meal of

the day during school lunch, but when the

weekend comes, there’s no food at home

so they go hungry. This loose change goes to buy

weekend food for at-risk elementary students in

Oconomowoc through the Blessings In A Backpack

program.

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL

Family Promise Thanks to those who participated in the golf outing held

at Paganica. This is one of our big fund raisers for the

year.

If anyone would like to be trained to volunteer for Family

Promise, please contact Sue Stelling or Charlotte Voigt for

information.

We will be hosting four families July 29 – August 5. During

our last rotation in April, James, Nadine and their two

children were our guests. We received a letter from him

after he graduated from the program and moved to

Louisiana to rehab a home his father owned and gave to

James and his family. What follows is part of that letter.

Dear Family Promise,

I would like to thank you for all you have done for my

family and me. When we became homeless I did not

know what I was going to do. Having a wife and two

children ages 5 and 3, I knew it was going to be hard. I

wanted to protect my family from what was going to be

a very bad experience as much as possible. Being that

my son is 5 there’s a good chance he will remember this

experience. The thought of my family being in a shelter

was unbearable. I was going to do all I could do to

make sure that did not happen. We went to a motel

which was $55 per night. Buying food daily, gas to take

Nadine to work and the kids to school and earning

enough money was challenging but I did it for about 3

weeks. Needless to say the money went fast and we

came to the realization we needed help and would have

to seek out a shelter.

I called 211 and found that all of the shelters in

Milwaukee were full but the operator suggested I try

Family Promise in Wales. After I went through intake at

Family Promise I knew it was not going to be a horrible

experience I was so fearful of. There was going to be a

place for us to go during the day and a room with some

level of privacy to sleep at during the night. What I did

not expect was what the overall experience turned out

to be. My children loved it! The set up and the way we

were treated completely removed the “shelter

experience” for my children. For that I am eternally

grateful. My wife and I were very aware of our situation

but being in the Family Promise program took the edge

off our situation and allowed us to focus on working our

way out of it. Thanks to Family Promise my children will

never know what it feels like to be homeless. As for me

and Nadine, we felt the mental stress of our situation but

not homelessness. It felt more like some very nice people

were helping us avoid homelessness.

Thank you to the churches and volunteers who help

make Family Promise possible. I hope your program

continues to grow. There are a lot of families who could

use your help. My family and I will never forget what you

did for us.

Eternally grateful,

James

Kiosk Collections The kiosk in the church foyer has drawers labeled for

different things we collect on an ongoing basis. It’s a

great way to get rid of unneeded items and help out at

the same time:

Grocery receipts from Albrecht’s Sentry store in

Delafield. We receive a rebate of the total receipts

we submit. Those rebates help our bottom line!

Empty printer ink cartridges are turned in at Office

Max to earn credit for Emmanuel purchases.

First Aid items/new toothbrushes/OTC pain meds

(unopened) are given to the Free Clinic in

Oconomowoc.

Used cell phones and chargers are sold on eBay with

proceeds benefiting our bottom line.

Used eye glasses are given to the Dousman Lions

Club: throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other

volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them

to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs).

LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength

and package the glasses. Recycled glasses are

distributed to people in need in low and middle

income communities where they will have the

greatest impact.

Please place them in the kiosk drawer (in the foyer)

marked for cell phone collection. THANK YOU Bill

Welch who turns those old phones into dollars for

Emmanuel by selling them on Ebay.

Some of you also get a hard-copy newsletter.

If you wish to discontinue that version and only

get it via email,

please contact Donna
