Both the culture and our lazy liturgical discipline pro-long the Christmas season at the wrong end. Knowing that “the Christmas spirit” opens our wallets, commercial in-terests encourage us to begin singing carols before we’ve digested the Thanksgiving turkey, and then stop the day after Christmas. Advent dies the death of the thousand neglects, and celebration of the real 12 days of Christmas is as rare as a partridge in a pear tree.

As I write this, the Christ-mas season is just drawing to a close. And I hope you’ve been given many fresh op-portunities both to enjoy it and to share its blessings with many others.

Barbara and I have been abundantly blessed by the many Christmas greetings and remembrances we’ve received from our Christ Church family. You have truly blessed us, and our hearts have been warmed by your love.

I think if there’s anything we have to offer as we be-gin this new calendar year, it is the conviction that all

the wondrous and beauti-ful stories about Jesus’ birth and his role in human history are in fact, true. And that this reality invites us, challenges us, and enables us to live as witnesses to that truth. Jesus has come not to scold, but to offer a living example of what it looks like to live a life wholly conformed to the Father’s will. We can offer no less.

Blessings to you all,+ Bill Frey

Ladies’ Study of John’s Gospel to Resume after Holidays

The ladies’ Bible study will resume on Thursday, January 13, focusing on John‘s Gospel, chapter seven. The format will be the same:

meet in discussion classes at 10:00 AM, and then move to the Parish Hall for Bishop Frey’s lecture. The study concludes promptly at 11:30, and childcare is always provided. If you did not participate in this study in the fall, it’s not too late to join! Call the church office and register with Cherelle, and we will gladly assign you to a discussion group. This is also a great way to introduce others to Christ Church, so please bring a friend or neighbor. We look forward to seeing you on Thursdays.

Fireproof Your Marriage and Reaffirm Your Wedding Vows (7-week Bible study)

On Wednesday evening, Feb. 9, 2011, we will watch the film “Fireproof” at the church. This Christian film focuses on a marriage that is cooling and needs significant help. On the brink of divorce, the couple goes through an experiment called the Love Dare to try to restore their marriage. It’s a powerful film for sure. There will be six more Wednesday eve-nings for couples to study how to strengthen their marriage bonds and covenants, based upon the film and The Love Dare. (The class will culminate with a reaffirmation of wed-ding vows.) A Children’s Ministry program (as well as childcare) will be offered during the study. Look for more information on how to register for the class in the coming weeks! Whether you are a newlywed or have been married for many years, all are invited and please invite friends! For questions, contact Amy and Chad Case at 723-4350, [email protected] or Laura Nell and Trace Burton at 219-1930, [email protected].

Christ Church New Member’s Class

A Christ Church New Member’s Class will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This class is for adults old and new who are interested in exploring the meaning of faith in Jesus Christ and how they can grow at Christ Church. This day will also provide instruction for those wish-ing to be confirmed, received or reaffirmed when the bishop visits. If you are planning to come, contact Cherelle, 736-3132 or [email protected], so that we can have materials for everyone. Childcare will be pro-vided should you desire it.

January 23, 2011, Annual Parish Meeting

Our annual parish meeting will be held in the sanctuary immediately following the 10:15 AM service. There will be ministry and financial reports as well as an election of new vestry members. Nominee information is coming soon. Nursery will be provided from 8:45 AM to 12:30 PM. Children’s Chapel will be held at 10:15 AM. 3 year olds - 5th graders will have activities in the FMC, and 6th graders - 15 year olds will have activities in the Carriage House. All parishioners 16 years of age and older are encouraged to attend; we will elect 5 new vestry members and receive ministry and financial reports.

As I am writing this report, we have just held our an-nual Children’s Christmas Pageant. What a joy and encouragement it was with so many children, especially preschoolers, participating. This is such a positive sign of new growth in this be-loved old church. This year’s pageant was special—a new one added to our repertoire, “Santa’s Favorite Story – The Story of the First Christmas.” The inspiration for it was the children’s book of the same title and the fact that the best person possible to play the role of St. Nicholas was right there with us on staff, our Interim Rector Bishop Bill Frey. The fifth graders were our stars, playing the main nativity characters. This has been a meaningful rite of passage at Christ Church for these oldest children for the last 22 years. The pageant was a blessing to all involved. Thank you to all the children, parents, and grandparents who participated. We concluded our Children’s Ministry year with the SAMM Shelter Christmas Party, which our older children and parents hosted for families in the SAMM Transitional Housing Program who have made the difficult leap from homelessness to indepen-dent living. We learned from

the stories of these coura-geous fami-lies, prayed for them, and brought Christ-mas gifts for them. Highlights in-clude Vacation Bible School and Rally Day. “Egypt – Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Pal-ace” was this summer’s VBS theme. Brooke Peacock, Amy Case, and our friend from St. Mark’s, Jennifer Allison, did a great job of transforming Christ Church into ancient Egypt as the setting for the epic story of Joseph from Genesis. Over 120 children were ministered to and ap-proximately 50 adults and teens served as guides for the children. St. Mark’s Church was excited to co-sponsor last summer’s VBS with us and provided many children and volunteers in this cooperative effort. We are looking forward to this coming summer’s VBS “Hometown Nazareth – Where Jesus Was A Kid,” June 20 – 24, directed by Amy Case.

“Good Ship Christ Church” was this fall’s Rally Day theme as we celebrated the church as a symbol of God’s protection through life’s smooth and stormy seas, guided by the Light of Christ. Bishop Frey served as our captain, and Sunday school shepherds as our ship’s mates who signed up big and little sailors to come on board for a new Sunday school year. Children donned personally decorated sailor hats and had great fun play-ing on our beautiful new playground.

Construction was completed on our long-awaited play-ground, dedicated in March thanks to the generosity of our parish and commitment of our Playground Com-

mittee members: Jennifer Shemwell, Renee Sethness, and Amy Case. The children have been enjoying the play-ground often and are happy to share it with children of the neighborhood and Re-spite Care. Our Children’s Communion Class and Celebration were held in the spring and gifted us with a beautiful new ban-ner designed by the parents with an All Saints theme. Please come to Children’s Chapel to see our six lat-est Communion banners on display thanks to the work of dad Randy Holmes. The Easter Egg Hunt and Liturgy of Light service seem to grow larger each year, where the light of Christ is shared by all. Thanks go to all our faith-ful Sunday school shepherds who guide our children each Sunday: Rebecca Fac-ile, Lily Fenton, and Tyler Holmes (preschool); Carmen Lewenthal, Jennifer Rose and Cynthia Franklin (1st and 2nd grade); Mary Ellen and Stephen Archer, Mary Carter, Jennifer Harper, and Catherine and Matt Markette (3rd – 5th grade). Also to be thanked are our team of Chil-dren’s Chapel leaders: Ida and Scotty Scott, John Boyce, Charissa Fenton, and Amy Case, who share responsibil-

ity of leading our children in worship each Sunday. I am grateful to share lead-ership and friendship with a very support-ive Children’s Ministry Lead-ership Team made up of: Jennifer Rose (Chair), Mary Ellen Archer, Cynthia Frank-lin, Gretchen Duggan, Caroline Sch-upbach, Amy Case, Renee Sethness, Dennis Eberhardt, Susanna Kitayama, Barbara Frey, Jean King, and Beth Kissling. They are a creative group who share the same passion for reaching our chil-dren for Christ in His church. I look forward to an excit-ing new year of growth for Christ Church and Children’s Ministry—deep growth root-ed in the love of Christ and His church. We begin each year in Children’s Ministry with the children’s Epiphany Celebration in January. There they are given the opportuni-ty to give their heart to Jesus and choose a star symbol-izing the Light and Truth

of Christ which will always guide them. Our intent and prayer is that every time we are with our children, there will be the opportunity for them to receive Christ in their heart and be encour-aged to shine His Light out into the world. The long time mission statement of Christ Church is “To know Christ and make Him known.” This simple, but profound state-ment is also adopted as the mission of Children’s Min-istry where the early seeds of faith are planted in the fertile ground of children’s hearts. Love In Christ, Halleta

upcoming Children’s eventsChildren’s Epiphany CelebrationSunday, January 9Children’s Chapel, 10:15 AM

Epiphany means “revela-tion.” God reveals himself through Jesus Christ as Savior for all the world. In Children’s Chapel we fol-low the star and the wise kings as they search for the Christ child. We each carry a heart as a symbol of our love and devotion to Christ during this journey to Jeru-salem, King Herod’s Palace, and Bethlehem, where we find baby Jesus and give Him our hearts. We receive a star as a symbol of God’s truth and light in Christ before we travel to our final destina-tion, the world, as we bear the light of Christ. We carry on this beloved ritual every year at Epiphany

in order to allow the children to experience in a concrete manner the receiving of Christ and the acceptance of his commission to take Him out into the world – “To know Christ and make Him known” as our Christ Church mission statement so simply states. After the journey, we will all gather in the Tomlin Room for King’s Cake and a prize for those who find a tiny Baby Jesus in their piece of cake. This is a meaningful and evangelical celebration that concludes the Christmas season. Make sure your kids don’t miss and have them invite friends.

Children’s Communion Class Our Children’s Communion class will begin Sunday, Feb-ruary 13, and conclude with a Communion Celebration Ser-vice on Sunday, May 1. First

and second graders will be included in this year’s class as well as any older chil-dren who want to participate.

A Parent Ori-entation for the class will take place Sun-day, February 6 at 9:00 AM

in Children’s Chapel on the second floor of the Family Ministry Cen-ter. This class is designed to enrich the children’s understanding and experience of Holy Com-munion. It is not a require-ment for the receiving of Communion.

Basic questions of our faith such as: Who is Jesus; What is Holy Communion; Why Do We Celebrate Communion; How Do We Celebrate Holy Communion; How Do We Pre-pare to Receive Communion; and What Is Christian Com-munity, will be discussed in our class. The children will delve into the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer to determine answers to these questions. Parents will be involved as teaching helpers on a rotat-ing basis in class. They will also be involved in special projects such as the class banner and the Communion retreat, which will be held at the church Saturday, April 30, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM as preparation for the Communion Celebration on May 1.

Page 7: The Message January 2011

Please contact Halleta at the church at [email protected] or 736-3132 with any ques-tions. The Communion class is a great community builder for children and parents alike, so all are encouraged to participate.

VBS Summer 2011:“Hometown Nazareth – Where Jesus Was A Kid” Please save the dates June 20 – 24 for VBS “Hometown Nazareth – Where Jesus Was A Kid.” Amy Case is this year’s VBS Director and is ex-cited about beginning plans in February. If you would like to help in initial planning, please contact Amy Case or Halleta at the church. This looks to be an exciting VBS in which our children can really identify with Jesus as a kid like them in many ways.

The children will visit Mary, Jesus’ Mom, in her Nazareth home in order to find out more about her son Jesus and be part of the Market-place in the village of Naza-reth where Jesus grew up. Many children and teen and adult helpers will be needed to help the childhood of Jesus come to life here at Christ Church. VBS regis-tration will begin in April, so spread the word to your friends.

We have been so blessed by the wonderful love that is expressed and shared by our dedicated people here at Christ Church. Whether it be in pleasure or joy or illness or death, our faithful flock is ready to accept the challenge to serve those in need. Let us explore the array of minis-tries we have ready to reach out in love to support and help others.

We began our year by of-fering another six-week “Life After Loss” program designed by the American Cancer Society for those who are grieving. We finished 2010 with our “Coping With Grief During the Holidays” in November sponsored by this department and Porter Lor-ing Family Care Services.

The Intercessory Prayer Team meets every Monday at noon to pray for the many concerns presented through the Sunday information cards, phone, and personal contacts. They are joined by the daily intercessions of the Daughters of the King Prayer Warriors. The Emergency Prayer Chain stands ready at the direction of the clergy for critical situations that demand immediate, active intercession. Lois Shockley is our contact person.

The Pastoral Care desk is responsible for calling all pa-rishioners on their birthday. This is another fun thing we do that always brings so much joy to those hav-ing birthdays. We just say, “Happy Day, we are thinking of you.”

The Hospital Visitors check in with the Pastoral Care Desk and make visits to all the hospitals in the San Antonio area if our parishio-ners are registered there. The Home Eucharistic Ministers take communion monthly to people in nursing home and the home-bound. The clergy also visit and lead regular services at the Forum, with lay ministers leading ser-vices at the Chandler Center, both touching the lives of so many. This year we have taken communion out to approximately 82 parishio-ners that are home-bound or unable to attend church. This does not count the services that we held at our two nurs-ing homes. Thank you Frank and Mary Moorhead for your continued love of this ministry. We also express our thanks to Dan and Jean Goetz for their service to Chandler Center.

Our beautiful altar flowers are delivered each Sunday morning after our service by

Clair Levings-ton and others through the Daughters of the King Guild. We received many calls expressing the gratitude of those receiving the flowers. If you have a re-quest to honor or remember someone, just call me and let’s share with others your memories by placing flow-ers on the altar at a specific time. After the service these flowers are taken to our pa-rishioners unable to attend church, so they may share their beauty.

We continued our Circle of Care meetings for Lay Chap-lains who have completed their Community of Hope training. With Ferne Burney and Renee Sethness as our co-chairmen, we met once a month for dinner, wor-shipped, had a program, and debriefed with others about our ministries. We will be offering another Community of Hope class beginning on January 13, 2011 at 6:30 PM. Come join this new class and learn to listen with the ears of your heart.

In February we sponsored our West Texas Region COH Retreat at Mustang Island.

Pastoral Care annual report

Our speaker was the Rev. Dr. Les Fairfield, retired church history professor. We already have our next retreat set for March 5-6, 2011 with another excellent speaker. These are fun with lots of informa-tion shared. Thank you, Rev. Eric Fenton for setting this retreat into action, finding excellent speakers, and sup-porting all of our West Texas Region COH classes.

The Funeral Reception minis-try has been able to provide the gift of hospitality and food to grieving families where they can gather in the Parish Hall with friends after the funeral services here in the church. Marjie Davis and Diane DeLong coordinate these receptions with many volunteers.

We are now developing a wel-coming committee for Sun-day mornings. What a good time we have greeting all! We watch for new families that need a smiling face to say, “I’m glad to see you. Please tell me your name.” If you would like to be part of this committee just call me at 736-3132. It’s only 30 min-utes each Sunday morning.

As you can see, The Pastoral Care Ministry involves all of you. Each time someone en-ters the hospital it involves

many parishioners. You are needed to pray, visit, call, and just reach out to those in need. Bless each of you for your wonderful support and love of Christ Church. I am privileged to serve as Pasto-ral Care Administrator with the support of Rev. Scott Kitayama.

No one can doubt that 2010 was a challenging year for Christ Church. However, strong worship continued as job one for the music depart-ment. Maintaining an ener-getic and spirit-filled service on Sundays was considered a high priority for the sake of church-wide morale and at-tracting new members.

Our spring Charity Mes-siah performance saw a full house and the proceeds of the concert, $2,000, were donated to charities for the homeless in San Antonio. An Advent Evensong service with Bill Frey, John Barrett, and Scott Kitayama, the Cha-pel Boychoir, and members of our Chancel Choir was enjoyed by our own as well a number of visitors from out-side the parish, as was our annual Lessons and Carols service.

annual report from our music ministryReducing the Sunday sched-ule to two services helped save money during the fi-nancial crunch as well as did making the following profes-sional music personnel re-ductions: Cherub Choir di-rector Annalisa Mendiola and percussionist/guitarist Dar-ren Kuper. Bassist Brandon Rivas resigned and was not replaced. Lessons and Carols and Christmas Eve brass was removed from the budget and subsequently funded through donations to Friends of Music. Our November Friends of Music letter sent to current members brought in significant funds helping us finish the year.

Special thanks go to our organist Josh Benninger for his beautiful playing and for his help in supporting and developing our choir musi-cally and spiritually. Our children’s choir department director Ruth Berg donated a significant amount of her time and talent for the ben-efit of our children. And our primary wedding and funeral organist Madolyn Fallis con-tinues to be valued and rec-ognized as among the best musicians in the city. Kudos as well go to the music com-mittee led by Fred Shockley as they provided significant guidance and leadership within the ministry.

A January choir retreat at the dioc-esan center on Mustang Island offered a valu-able skills, spirit, and fel-lowship boost to our adult choir. It may not be well known that choir volun-teers donate approximately 4-5 hours a week of their time amount-ing to well over 200 hours a year to the par-ish.

We give great thanks to our God and for the provision of his Word which forms the foundation of our worship. And we give thanks for the gift of our talents and for the privilege of offering these gifts back to Him as we pro-claim the Gospel of Christ in music to church and commu-nity.

Sincerely yours in Christ,Owen Duggan, D.M.A., minister of music

Here at Christ Church we are blessed with worldly goods and pleasures galore. Yes, we are saved, but per-haps we are a little self-cen-tered. We want the good life and as Americans we have it. But the question is do we have a “me or thee-first faith.” More than ever short- term missions are within our grasp. Our world has become smaller and shrinking daily because of our cars, buses, airplanes, and our precious passport. Almost every cor-ner of the world is available and we can spread the Good News. With our fingertips we can communicate, but Christ Church offers us possibilities this year to get our bodies out of the box.

Honduras Water Well Minis-try: A team goes down from the diocese several times a year to drill wells and min-ister to adults and children. Good health routines are discussed with the villagers. Proficiency in Spanish is not required. Several trips are planned for the year.

Kampala, Uganda, East Africa: A group from Christ Church will be going in late June or July to work at the Mustard Seed Orphanage and the girls’ school in Hoima, Ugan-da. This will primarily be a trip with parents and youth.

There will be arts and crafts and other programs with the children. Several moms and kids have already ex-pressed an interest. Call Frances or John Harrison 822-0575

St. Petersburg, Russia: Early July a group from local churches nor-mally goes for two weeks to help with the children’s sum-mer camp. A portion of the campers will be orphans. We will sing, dance, play games, teach English, hang out, and tell about Jesus. Please contact Greg Sethness at [email protected] or 822-4160.

In July another missions/youth trip is planned for the Hogar Infantil children’s home in Chiapas, Mexico, in June or July. A group of 20 adults and children went last summer, and many want to go again. This is a one-week trip and is meaningful and rewarding. Please contact John Harrison at 822-0575.

In all of these locations we have friends and reliable contacts. Safety and good hygiene are always at the top of our priority list. You will receive more than you give. Just ask any one who has been. Please indicate your desires early so plans can be finalized.

Any questions may be di-rected to John Harrison at 822-0575.

laura shaver(Former) Dir. of Communications

The communications de-partment at Christ Episcopal Church continues to deliver news of events and an-nouncements to our parish-ioners. We saw a challeng-ing year in 2010, but grace abounds, and I welcome you to 2011.

In 2010 we implemented online viewing of our news-letter, The Message. With online viewing, each issue shines in full color, and we have the ability to embed links to get you to our web-site and to other sites we mention. When we first went “online,” we placed each issue in a view setting pow-ered by Z-mags. The annual cost was close to the annual cost of printing and mailing The Message, but we felt we were moving forward in the ever-changing landscape of communication and tech-nology. Toward the end of the year, we, fortunately, learned about Issuu.com. We switched our viewing plat-form, which simplified the details to navigate the issues, and reduced our cost for on-line viewing by 94%. Wow.

We continue to deliver a weekly email newsletter every Wednesday morning, containing news and events for the upcoming week and the Gospel reading for Sun-

a new Day in Communicationsday. Our website is updated daily and serves as a tre-mendous resource not only for parishioners but also for potential visitors and new members. Please visit some-time and tell us what you think: www.cecsa.org.

Each Sunday you receive our weekly “wrapper” which covers the service bulletin, containing all the announce-ments of what’s going on at Christ Church.

We continue to put together various projects for each ministry, and we take pride in being able to serve each area of Christ Church.

2011 brings you a new Direc-tor of Communications, Bian-ca Leonard. Please welcome her with open arms. I (Laura Shaver) am now serving as the Communications Of-ficer at the Diocese of West Texas. While I am excited for this opportunity, I will miss all of you and the love and support you have provided over the past three and one-half years. I know Bianca is in good hands! She will bless you with her talents and skills as I know you will bless her with your gentle hos-pitality. Here’s to a blessed year for Christ Church.
