On April 15th, the Mercy College MBA and Strategic Consulting Institute’s (SCI) Advisory Board reunited in Mercy College’s Manhattan Campus for the third time since its inception. The SCI Board was established with the primary purposes of providing mentoring and coaching assistance to Mercy MBA students, sourcing new consulting assignments for the SCI, and expanding the already significant Mercy corporate network. The Board is a Who’s Who in the world of New York business. Members include executives from major corporations including Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, UBS, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Accenture, IBM, PwC, HSBC and JP Morgan Chase. Dr. Ray Manganelli, the executive dean of the SCI and head of the Mercy MBA program, shared with the Board members the outstanding achievements of the Mercy MBA program – new enrollment almost tripled year-to-year and the Mercy MBA program made the top 15 in
Crain’s ranking of the largest MBAs in the NYC area – and discussed the program’s strategic direction and growth initiatives. Other topics included the next Turbo session in August, Mercy MBA’s strategic partnership with the Association of Management Consulting Firms (AMCF) (Mercy is the only MBA program in the U.S. partnering with this premier, global association) and the ongoing and upcoming SCI consulting projects. As usual, MBA candidates were invited to a reception where they had the chance to interact with the Board in an informal setting. They had the opportunity to receive career advice and establish connections with seasoned business professionals. The Board reception, like many other Mercy MBA-featured networking events, gives Mercy MBAs the exposure to high-profile business profes-sionals. These initiatives share the objective of enhancing students’ personal and professional growth outside the classroom and boosting their confidence.

SCI STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN AMCF EVENTS
On March 27, several SCI members and MBA students accompanied by four Mercy faculty members attended AMCF’s 2014 Annual Spotlight Awards that celebrate value and excellence in consulting. Among the finalists being recognized for outstanding and most innovative consulting project work were companies such as Ernst & Young, Tunnell Consulting, PricewaterhouseCoopers, FTI Consulting, and KPMG. Throughout the day, the students and faculty had the pleasure of participating in a series of panels and presentations on this year’s top global game-changers. Topics included the revolution of big data, the intersection of social media and mobile technology, and the future of emerging markets. The event was an excellent opportunity for MBA students involved in the Strategic Consulting Institute to learn about the most important trends in consulting and their impact on big players in the industry. Additionally, the reception and dinner awards ceremony provided ample opportunity for students to network with and learn more from top consultants.
On April 29th, MBA students Patricia DeAngelo, Vanessa Hubbard-Lucey, Chanette Perry, Vallerie Rivera, and Siobhan Walsh, along with MBA Assistant Director Maureen Cross, attended the AMCF Women’s Leadership Network Dinner host-ed by Kurt Salmon Consulting. The topic of the night was “The Myth of The Ideal Worker: Does Doing All the Right Things Real-ly Get Women Ahead?” presented by Emma Sabin, Vice Presi-dent and Consultant, Global Member Services at Catalyst. Catalyst is driven by the research they do in order to tackle persistent myths regarding why women’s careers continue to lag men’s careers. This particular myth-buster focused on addressing the question of whether the gender gap persists because women and men adopt different strategies to advance their careers. They focused on the tactics used to advance, patterns of career advancement strategies, and whether chang-ing jobs may be a successful strategy in helping people get ahead. At the end of each section, Emma Sabin posed a series of questions for the participants to ponder. At the end of the presentation, the participants engaged in an open discussion. “The strategies discussed gave me great ideas on how to better prepare myself to advance in my career, even in male dom-inated fields like consulting.” said Patricia DeAngelo.
On May 2nd students from Mercy’s MBA program joined global consulting experts at an interactive panel discussion on innovation and leadership hosted by the Association of Management Consulting Firms (AMCF). The session, entitled “Driving Innovation through Inspired Leadership”, was led by Faisal Hoque. As both a technology entrepreneur and journalist for Fast Company and Business Insider, Hoque is a sought-after thought leader for change and innovation. Businesses experience tremendous pressure to keep pace with innovation in a rapidly changing environment, while simultaneously manag-ing their current business objectives. In a brief introduction of his new book “Everything Connects”, Hoque stressed the need for companies to search for purpose in every part of their pro-cess, continuously striving to innovate. Encouraging and fostering a dynamic workplace – where change is ongoing and fluid - allows an organization to both innovate from within, positioning them for long-term success. The book, which was given to session participants, provides practical strat-egies for connecting with, inspiring, and leading your organi-zation. Joined by Anne Bodnar of Towers Watson, Alan Iny of Boston Consulting Group, and Drew West of Deltek, the inter-active group discussion that followed focused on how best to encourage and support continued innovation in corpora-tions. The group agreed that creativity needs both support from above as well as from within, and the freedom to work autonomously instead of driving to an expected result.
WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP PANEL INNOVATION THROUGH LEADERSHIP
Attendance in this and other AMCF events is made possible through Mercy College’s Strategic Consulting Institute. As the only MBA Program and one of only two colleges in the country that is a member of the AMCF, Mercy MBA students have the unique opportunity to participate in the valuable career development programming that the AMCF offers.

MBA Reception On May 5th, Mercy MBAs and faculty gathered in the Mercy Rotunda at the Dobbs Ferry Campus for the Spring MBA Reception. The initiative was an opportunity for students and faculty to interact, socialize outside the classroom, and get some much needed break from the anxiety and chaos of the final weeks of the spring quarter. The reception, as many other Mercy MBA-featured events, aims to foster a collaborative and friendly environment within the Mer-cy MBA community, to enrich students’ learning experience and to add a social dimension to the classroom interaction. Over ten faculty members mingled with students, reinforcing the dynamic and highly engaging rapport that Mercy MBAs have with their professors. It was overall a very pleasant, fun event - a little rewarding experience at the end of a quarter full of hard work and dedication that connected all business students, whether they take courses in Dobbs Ferry, Manhattan, or online.
