search of a perfect societyI was approached by NaomiRomanchok to write an articleabout the adventures of beinga foreign student. Well, let metell you, it is not an adventure. But being a'foreign studenthas allowed me to perceivet h i ngs d i f f e re n t l y abo u tmyself, my country (Egypt) andthe people around me. It gaveme a chance to hear differentopinions and accumulate dif-ferent experiences which hashelped Ho shape my way ofthinking. It all started five years ago. Iwas so excited about comingto the United States to con-tinue my education. I was toldby* friends and relatives whovisited the U.S. how advancedit is. Some even speculatedthat ;the U.S. is at least 50

years more advanced thanEurope. .J jsjm2 1 II started forming an imageof the perfect society. I eventhought that could be the pro-mised land. I s j j &Nor flong after| all thesedreams I arrived to the UnitedStates. On my|way from theairport!to my uncle's apart-ment in New York, I was great"ly^disappointed. There werebumps in i the streets.e#Thestreets of New York were norvery clean. At 2:00 a.m. I wokeup and looked from the win-dow to see astaxiithat brokedown, wAt|this point I realized thatthe perfect society,*and the

promised land was not in NewYork. I had to wakefup andstart living with re ality. However, this story mjghtnot be very strange to you;some of you might even had it

I Kbalid Massoudin a history class. Well, may benot exactly my story, but thestory of millions of immigrantswho came to the United Stateslooking for gold, and they weregreatly disappointed fto findthat there was none. * fLooking back at the last fiveyears of my life, I've had somedfficult times and some goodtimes. The difficult times dueprimari ly ' to the* languagebarrier.

I found it difficult to expressmyself to other people. Theidea was,: not justfto get mypoint across, I wanted to ex-press [myself eloquently andIntell igently. However t h is prob lemlasted for a couple of years un-t i l I learned the Englishlanguage. I also found it veryhard to get accepted by peers, but that also lasted for a shortperiod. I think these problemsexisted with foreign studentsunt i l they adapt ?tof|theAmerican way of life.Though I had a hard time, Ihad a good time when I wastraveling in the United States. Ivisited many cities that I readabout. I also made manyfriends that I'll never forget. Those friends were*very sup-portive and helpful. After all, this might be thepromised land. | |Finally, I realized that theperfect society that imagined, does not exist. However, it 'sup to me to make it e xist.America could be ugly if Iwanted it to look ugly in myeyes and it also could lookbeautiful if I wanted it to lookbeautiful in my eyes. This Istrue for everything we?do inlife, we could make it what wewant; * ^ ' : f S&
