LETTERS TO THE EDITORmIn the publishing of CathyStevenson's article, "The Big CopOut," many of the things iwediscussed in our lengthy interview were reported and forthe most part quite accurately. Ina short article, however, fit issimply impossible to convey vailthe thoughts or attitudes of theinterviewee. I would like then tomake certain clarifications. f.

First, as 1 mentioned to Cathyw h e n | s n e requested the interview, I am not, although listedas such initially, the AssociateDirector of the Program, butllwas responsible for the drawingup of the original requirementsfor Police Science Majors whichwas then discussed and approvedby Mr. Kinnane, Mr. Kubiak, andDean Garvey. iTheserequirements and the premisesbehind them have been referredto in Miss Stevenson's article, although | incomplete, they aregenerally accu rate. J MSecond, mv comments were not

intended to be either anythingstartling fnew, orsweepinglycri t ical of the entire LawEnforcement! Program. Theywere ratheri specific criticismsexpressed previously partially inclass; in discussions with LawEnforcement advisees; inconversations with Mr. Kinnane; andmore formally; inj a letter ofsuggestion tothe DepartmentHead and Dean as early as a y ear

Third, 1 wish to mention tha tth e brevity! of| Cathy's^articlemust have precluded her fromomitting much of the favorablecomments}that I asked she include) Inparticular, I statedseveral $ times I during -the interview that my criticisms froma faculty standpoint were not ofpersonnel butfof jpolicy. (Evenmore precisely it is not even jacriticism ofpolicy per sej butrather ofiour failures, mine in-cluded |to enforce consistently thepolicies we nowf have.) fj pai | |1 icularly singled out Mr. Kinnane,

as in my opinion, the best possiblechoice the Dean could have madefor the head of our 'Law Enforcement Division. That asja Law-Enforcement Officer he wasexactly what we werestrying tobring about in our graduates. Also mentioned was the iact.thatalthough a number of my formerstudents had related to me theirfeeling that \ the program wasbecoming far too ^policeviewpoint" loriented, they hadmuch praise forfthe? quality andsincerity of |most fof their in-structorsjl^ ?Fourth, and perhaps mostimportantly, although 1 do indeedbelieve that there are manypresent lawtenforcement majorswho fail to meetjbne or more ofthe criteria^indicated in the article, there are a number offlineyoung men who it has been nty.pleasure to teach and know whowill someday be a credit to bothour college and the Law Enforl

The spring sports are off andrunning for the 1973 season at theHurst. The baseball teamrecorded another first- in theMercyhurst record,!books lastSaturday!when they swept bothends of a double-header fromDuquesne 9-7 and 8-6. Thisweekend the golf and crew te amswill open their respective seasonsif old man winter does not make afinal blast. V ty |The linksters will debut onFriday, 7April i 13th againstAllegheny College. The matchwill be played in Erie at theLawrence c Park Golf Course.Second year coach Paul Olczakhas i four i lettermen returningfrom last year's 14-7 team. Theyare sophomores Bruce Chase andRich Seus jj and juniors DarioCipriani and Jerry ?Kownacki. These four players are all well-experienced and; should providesolid footing for this yea r's sq uad.The depth which the Lakerslacked last seaso n will come fromsophomore Kim Kupniewski, whowas scholastically ineligible lastseason ,; junior transfer RichMagner and J freshmen TomI lixenbaugh andTerry Frontino. The golfers face a difficult 15match schedule with 5 out of thetop 7 teams in last year 's districttournament on the slate. However, if the veterans canperform as they did last year andthe newcomers can add the much

needed depth,j an 11-4 recordcould easily be achieved * * 'Wi-lt by chance you should see abunch of people rowing in the coldwaters of he Erie Bay this week, you'll know it's the Mercyhurstcrew team. I don't think the CoastGuard would brave the weather. The rowers are prepping for theBuffalo City] Championships onSaturday. They proved that theyare definitely contenders for thiscrown last fall when they rowedto a sweep against Buffalo Stateand one week later gave smallcollege power Morris Harvey allthey could handle. The co-ed crew team is coac-

ched by former All-Americansoccer player Dave Shimpeno. They receive very valuableassistance in the technicalaspects of the sport from BobAngelucci, Jack G artner and ShelPotter. The team is Iwell -experienced, especially I th econtingent from ConsignorBonner High f School inPhiladelphia, who sport a strongrowing prog ram. The spirit of the27-man bunch is terrific and theyfeel this is their year. m| The third y ear team will haveits hands full with first rate crewssuch as Canisius, Grands ValleyState and Wayne State. Thehighlight of their season will betheir second appearance in theMid-American Rowing Regatta.Itea$WQLN-NOTES
