Friday 12 June 2015, BMA House London
Stop and Think is the theme for the mia 25th Anniversary Conference on Friday 12th June at BMA House London. Aimed at general
managers, venue directors, sales professionals and conferences organisers as well as suppliers and agents the conference promises to
deliver a unique experience and platform for the meetings industry.
The conference, whose headline sponsor is The Meetings Show, has been built to not only challenge thinking but to equip individuals with practical
tools and knowledge to sharpen their approach to their own development and their business growth. Jane Longhurst, chief executive of the mia talks
about the approach that has been taken so far in shaping the conference programme.
Our task was to create something different, that will not only inspire the industry but that will challenge the way they think. I want every delegate to
walk away with renewed energy to think differently and to feel equipped and inspired to make brave, bold decisions for their career and their
business. After some difficult years in the industry we now have the opportunity to remind people that they need to question everything they do and
our industry needs to champion new strategies and engagement with our employees as well as our customers.
The day will be introduced by keynote speaker, Mike van Der Vijver, co-founder of MindMeeting and author of Into the Heart of Meetings. Working
internationally as a meeting designer and advisor, Mike specialises in the design of effective meeting programmes and formats designed to stimulate
both produce and service innovation. Mike will set the tone for the day and open delegates minds to a new way of thinking and get their brains ready
for a day crammed with enterprising speakers, practical workshops, inspiring panel discussions and plenty of networking opportunities.
Delegates will be able to choose from three streams throughout the day, enabling them to tailor the programme to suit their individual requirements.
Jackie Mulligan, Principal Lecturer & Director of Enterprise UK Centre for Events Management, Carnegie Faculty International Centre for Research
into Events, Tourism & Hospitality and conference committee member, highlights the need for the industry to Stop and Think. We dont get enough
time to stop and think, mainly because we seem to programme it out of ourselves. Even if we have free time, we spend it staring down at our phones
and scrolling down. I travel a lot and I see that on trains and indeed in traffic! But perhaps the most innovative sparks are when we raise our heads,
look out of the window or simply daydream. The challenge in our ever busy lives, in particular in hospitality and events, is finding time to look up, look
around and look ahead. The conference will give moments to participants to reflect on new ideas, approaches and thoughts. To make them count and
turn into positive changes, we might all need to promise ourselves to switch off our devices on the trip back home.
Reporting live on the outcomes from each of the days sessions and drawing proceedings to a close will be Broadcaster, Steph McGovern. Steph
reports on business and finance around the world and regularly interviews those on the frontline of British business getting to the heart of whats
actually going on the real economy.

Once again The Meetings Show has partnered with award winning Marion Lowrence from The PA Hub to deliver relevant and engaging
content for PAs attending the show at Olympia from 7-9 July, 2015.
Sessions will include:
Conference Planning- From Thought to Finish
Social Media for Your Meetings and Conferences
Top Conference Planning Tips
The Ultimate Event Angel: How to Market for Success in Ten Simple Steps
Marketing and Brand Awareness Tips
A variety of successful and well established PAs will also be hosting Meet the Expert sessions
Marion Lowrence, Director, The PA Hub, comments: PAs have very different needs and pressures to those individuals working in other roles such as
a dedicated event organiser in a corporate environment. Conference and meeting organisation is just one of the many roles a PA or Executive
Assistant needs to juggle. The Meetings Show is the ideal environment to expand those skills alongside their knowledge of relevant venues and
suppliers.
The Meetings Show has always been focused on the delivery of qualified hosted buyers, focused education and the best possible networking
opportunities, comments The Meetings Shows Event Director, Steve Knight. All too often education is too general and misses the specific needs of
individual audiences. Our work with Marion, as well as similar experts in the field of healthcare, technology, agencies, corporates and associations,
means we can deliver focused sessions of genuine interest to specific visitors providing knowledge, ideas and tools that can be implemented into
their working lives.

KENNEDY'S CONFERENCE CALLSposted on: 14/4/2015 11:16:55
From inner London, to barcelona and beyond, CMW meets international man
of meetings engineering mystery, Paul Kennedy, MBE.
Where were you born and raised?
In Rotherhithe, London, a working class area of inner London which serviced
the Surrey Docks. I spent all my early years in South East London.
What was your first career ambition?
To be an airline pilot but I discovered as a young boy you needed to speak
other languages, so that killed that one. I did not actually have a career ambition, as there were no professionals in
the wider family so I was not exposed to the options until adult life.
First job?
As a clerical officer in the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA), having followed my mother into the
organisation. I stayed there for 19 years moving through the ranks, gaining a degree in economics, mathematics
and geography (strange combination I know) and post graduate diploma in management.
Important early lesson?
An early painful professional lesson was not asking for help and direction when things were difficult. Not asking
meant they got much worse. Ever since I have encouraged team members to acknowledge when they are having
problems and to ask questions both being seen as a sign of strength.
Key career moments?
Firstly, taking on a part time degree course which signalled I was being serious about my career, then becoming
chief administrative officer at the Commonwealth Institute and then joining MPI which truly opened up a brand new
network of professional contacts.
What were your highlights of the Commonwealth Institute?
There were many great times at the Institute (and as it became known the Commonwealth Conference Centre),
including the creation of the infamous Teddy Awards, our main client event of the year and effectively a parody of
awards evenings. It is heartwarming that many industry colleagues still fondly remember them. We still have the
Fellowship of the Teddy! While I was there my daughters both presented bouquets the HM The Queen.
Person who most influenced you as an earlier career mentor?
At the Commonwealth Institute, I reported to James Porter, the then director general and a man of deep intellect,
style and integrity who showed me that I should take command of business situations. He made it clear that in a
public situation you need to have presence.
How did the MBE come about? Were you surprised?
I was surprised - my wife thought the letter was a tax demand. It was in acknowledgement of the work I carried
out in securing independence from the public purse for the Commonwealth Institute.
Was it a wrench to move on?
I thought it would be but it was not. I had 15 largely great years and I was fortunate at age 50 to be able to benefit
from early retirement on full terms. I have discovered that there are always opportunities when you move on - you
just sometimes have to take a chance.
How did you come to Reed?
I was approached by Tom Nutley, the then chairman of Reed Travel, to help identify a successor for the then show
director. On the spur of the moment I said I would take on the role.
Reed is much larger organisation, about profit, but with really excellent management data available in real time,
which helped in forming decisions.
What early targets did you set at Reed?
To build a new team of meeting professionals rather than what I call exhibition technicians; to convince the
international industry that this team would fix the problems, to convince Reed to give me and the new team time
and then to create business growth.
You certainly throw yourself into the association side (MPI in particular). Is there a direct correlation from
effort put in to success brought out?
I did get heavily involved in MPI and previously in the Meetings Industry Association (in the UK). I felt it was critical
to see EIBTM reconnected to the industry associations which are such an important part of the DNA in our
professional world.
What were some of the challenges at MPI and Reed and what were the tools you used to find
solutions? These are two
separate questions. MPI under different leaderships posed quite different problems. Trying to be the biggest is not
necessarily always consistent with providing the best member benefits. As a volunteer leader at chapter, then
board, and then executive board level I tried to extol the importance of corporate issues linked to chapter and
individual interests, as indeed did some other board members.
In Reed I think by far the biggest, and absolutely the most important, challenge was to reposition EIBTM and then
position the portfolio as part of the meetings industry, not peripheral to it.

You built up a very high profile portfolio at RTE. What are your coping strategies?
In fairness to Reed, I was not only allowed but genuinely supported in driving the re-engineering of EIBTM and then
creating a global portfolio. I also had a wonderful team who worked incredibly hard. My family was amazing in
accepting my travel of in excess of 30 weeks a year.
What were the key moments in rolling out the IBTMs? Were some smoother than others?
The most important was EIBTM 2005, the first event under my direction with a completely new team. It went well,
the transport and the appointment system both went off without a hitch and a degree of trust was regained.
The re-engineering of CIBTM and AIME were fascinating and the launch of GIBTM was a new experience for me.
What would you have done differently there with the benefit of hindsight?
I would have focused even greater resources on growing the association buyer sector within the portfolio and
devised strategies for doing this. My smartest business move was assembling the team. Some of the team were
simply outstanding.
What have been your coping strategies for spending so much time on the road and in the air?
I would like to say I have some systematic process but I dont. I must love to travel (and still do as a senior railcard
holder).
I get a thrill arriving at a destination for the first time. I was lucky in that I could travel in comfort and I believe
companies who expect staff to travel long haul (over five hours in my view) in anything but Business Class are
simply undervaluing their staff and in turn their customer base.
When did you feel it was time to move on from RTE?
I never joined RTE to build a career within the company and really enjoyed my time, but I was genuinely exhausted
from the travel and had realised I was missing too much of my family life. So, in February 2009, I decided I would
go as the launch of AIBTM had been postponed, my travel schedule was ever more packed and the storm clouds
of the recession were beginning to be manifest.
Are you busier now with the consultancy than ever?
No, part of the deal I struck with myself is that I would not work full time for anyone again. What I do is to work on
projects and with people I like and respect and which spark some intellectual or emotional trigger.
Life as a consultant is different, as you are always to some extent on the outside.
I am direct and candid in my advice to clients and, not surprisingly, some stage two engagements fail to appear as
a consequence. Equally I have learned to accept that life as a consultant is unpredictable.
I like to think the Convene event held in Vilnius is a model of how trade events can be created. And the advisory
board of The Meetings Show which I helped create I see as a kind of model of its kind, packed with industry
luminaries.
Is the international meetings industry in a good place now?
Yes, and has been for some time. Underlying demand for events is up, the supply side developments are
happening everywhere and many destinations old and new are positioning themselves onto the meetings market
place.
What are your predictions for three key trends moving forward in the industry?
I think we will continue to see an amazing array of new infrastructure projects as the macro- economic case for our
industry becomes common place in governments across the world.
I see the thirst for face-to-face meetings continuing largely unabated. It is after all a basic human need to meet;
organisational success is simply not practicable without teams meeting, products being launched and sold, and
scientific and technological knowledge being exchanged.
I see at a commercial level more focus on ROI or ROO being applied as issues such as compliance emerge
across sectors.

Ashfield Meetings & Events amongst top agency partners delivering buyers to The
Meetings ShowPublished on : Monday, April 27, 2015
The Meetings Show is working in partnership with key UK
agencies including Ashfield Meetings & Events, Trinity Event
Solutions, Worldspan Group, BCD M&I, ATP Event Experts, Team
Spirit Event Management, PAREXEL, Top Banana, Capita and
Owl Live to bring qualified meetings professionals to the 2015
show.
Agencies play an essential role in the UK meetings industry. Not
just as researchers and venue bookers but as strategic partners
working across the whole of a corporate or associations
meetings and events portfolio, said Steve Knight, event director
of The Meetings Show. Agencies have been a key part of our
buyer community since the launch of the show and this year is no exception. For 2015 we have created a
bespoke education programme including sessions developed by the agencies themselves; our show floor offers
the UKs most diverse selection of domestic and international exhibitors; and the networking programme
provides the perfect place to gather and meet their peers.
The partnership commits each of the agencies to bring front line meetings and event staff to The Meetings Show
in return for hosted buyer benefits such as use of facilities at the show for bespoke and internal meetings as well
as access to agency focused educational content.
Louise Goalen from Ashfield Meetings & Events said: In a sector where our staff and their combined knowledge
is one of our greatest assets, an event like The Meetings Show provides the perfect opportunity for our team to
conduct business, network and learn. Working directly with the show to facilitate logistics as part of the hosted
buyer programme allows our team to focus on everything on offer, particularly the development of relationships
with new suppliers as well as the extensive education programme. The Meetings Show has grown in terms of
both quality and quantity since its launch. It is an important date in our calendar and in 2015 we expect to send
representatives from our different service offerings including our logistical, venue finding and engagement
teams.
Education, networking and face to face meetings are key to the success of our industry as a whole and agencies
in particular, comments Anthony Hyde, Trinity Event Solutions managing director. The Meetings Show offers
the perfect opportunity to meet key suppliers, learn from industry experts and develop relationships that will be
of benefit for the long term. The Shows decision to engage directly with agencies such as Trinity ensures that
both the exhibitors and content are perfectly targeted to our business needs.
Organised by Centaur Exhibitions, The Meetings Show is the premier event for the UK inbound and outbound
meetings industry, taking place 7-9 July 2015 at Olympia, London. Organised by meeting professionals for
meeting professionals it is focused around a large exhibition, networking opportunities and professional
education.

Commissioners look to EVCOM
Corporate clients and commissioners of film, digital and live events are swelling EVCOMs membership as the association continues to go from strength to strength.
The association offers not only Best Practice guidance to procurement but also to metrics/ROI and a comprehensive portfolio of networking and educational events throughout the year. New Membership Director Dave Comley commented, Commissioners feel secure being part of a professional organisation within which they can develop their knowledge, network and meet potential partners for future projects. EVCOM continues to increase the involvement of corporate and government organisations in the wide range of events we hold. Our broad community completes the loop between client and commissioners agency, production company, freelancers and suppliers to the industry. Clients and commissioners are attracted to our offering and we have seen their numbers double in recent weeks.

So now that all the main parties have published their main manifestos we thought wed join in with the one that would work best for EVCOM members. After several focus groups, a skim through the papers and a rather nice bottle of Cotes de Rhone with Sunday lunch, the following notes have now been transcribed into what we think is a coherent and compelling non-party piece of political communication.
