Brisbane punches above its weight globally when it comes to the quality of scientific research. The combination of world leading research, an entrepreneurial culture, a great location in the Asia-Pacific region and strong government support is putting Brisbane in the global spotlight when it comes to Life Sciences, one of the world’s fastest growing industries today.

Home to the largest medical research institute in Australia, Brisbane’s Life Sciences industry is going from strength to strength.

QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, a world leading translational research institute where research develops from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside, is driving collaborative global health solutions.

Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) has strategic partnerships with Brisbane’s vibrant research and scientific communities, working closely with QIMR Berghofer, the Translational Research Institute (TRI) and other institutes as well as the city’s three leading universities as part of its highly successful Convention Advocates Partnership.

A partnership which includes a number of Australia’s top scientifi c and academic brains – collaboration vital to attracting international scientifi c conventions to Brisbane and BCEC.

QIMR Berghofer’s Director and CEO and BCEC Advocate, Professor Frank Gannon has his fi nger on the pulse of local research and development. Arriving in Brisbane after spending 17 years at the helm of leading research organisations in

Europe, he says he has continued to be struck by the standard of research facilities and scientists in Brisbane.

As the business capital of Queensland and seat of government, Brisbane’s standing as an international hub for medical research is well documented.

A major factor is the signifi cant and continuing investment in research development in Life Sciences by the government as part of the $650 million Advance Queensland Initiative.

CEO of Life Sciences Queensland Limited, BCEC Advocate Mario Pennisi describes Queensland as a mega bio diverse state of opportunities and capabilities. He says: “Bi-partisan long term government support and interest in the

sector has enabled us to position ourselves at the forefront of research and development.”

Take for instance the immunotherapy applied to cancer treatment through the work of BCEC Advocate and QIMR Berghofer’s Professor Rajiv Khanna AO. Based in Brisbane for the past 20 years, Professor Khanna says he has

been witness to the city’s growth and development in the science and medical sectors. “Not only in business but across academia, hospital campuses and clinical infrastructure, whenever I travel abroad people are now talking about Brisbane and immunotherapy.”

Or the development of a malaria vaccine. Advocate, Professor Michael Good AO is on a mission to defeat malaria. Professor Good, National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Principal Research Fellow at Griffi th

University’s Institute for Glycomics, has made it his life’s work to develop a vaccine capable of protecting the four billion people in 90 countries at risk of developing malaria.

And then there’s the development of the world’s fi rst cancer vaccine by University of Queensland’s Professor Ian Frazer AC, designed to help eradicate cervical cancer.

Queensland’s Life Sciences industry is cohesive and collaborative, well connected and fully integrated and making a difference.

Work and life are balanced differently in Anchorage, Alaska. Credit goes in large part to Anchorage’s

natural appeal. Filled with wildlife and trails, surrounded by park lands and soaking in the midnight sun, Anchorage is the best of Alaska, all in one place. It’s the embodiment of a liveable city for residents and visitors alike.

Anchorage is Alaska’s most populous city with just under 300,000 people living here. Its ties to the natural world are evident on arrival. Approaching by plane, the snow-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains reach up to reassure you that you are arriving at much more than a city. They’re a reminder of what will be with you for the duration: you’ve arrived in the Last Frontier. Although the urban scene will also put city-dwellers at ease.

You might meet colleagues in the morning and be face-to-face with a moose that evening. A day in a conference can be punctuated by a post-work hike. And a weekend escape might mean a visit to a national park that is the envy of travellers everywhere.

Incredible natural spaces and the urban streetscape aren’t mutually exclusive. One of the best places to go fishing, Ship Creek, is a few blocks from downtown hotels. Animals like eagles and salmon make occasional cameos in parks, thanks to greenbelts along creeks winding through

the heart of the city. Parklands punctuated by mountains rise from Anchorage’s eastern edge, encompassing 9,000 square miles of boreal forest. Split between a state park and a national forest, the closest trails are a brief drive from the city centre. Beyond the Chugach Range, iconic national parks including Denali, Katmai, Wrangell-Saint Elias, Lake Clark and Kenai Fjords are within easy reach.

Anchorage is one of the 10 happiest cities in the US, according to a study conducted by Gallup and National Geographic, which looked at metrics including access to nature, walkability, civic engagement and availability of healthy food.

“Alaskans love the outdoors, and Anchorage is no exception,” said Visit Anchorage’s Julie Dodds. “We enjoy a deep connection to our green spaces, parks and mountains, and we make the most of being so close to them all.”
