Nick is anexcellent organiser whokeptcamp workingandorganisedandgreatlyreduced theusualentropypresent in runningafield camp,hetoolalot of theorganisational burdenoff the shouldersofmyselfandKirstyS.At theaviaries, KirstyJenkintookto theworklike anoldhand,gotonverywell withAranxiaandhada wonderful time.It is duetotheexcellent workofAranxiaandKirstyJ thatwesuccessfully reared11outof 13young,andseveral of these wererescuedbirdsfromfailingnests, andnotatalleasytorear.Pete fittedintocamplife andhisnononsense approachandpractical skills wereappreciated byall.Heorganisedoneofthemostsuccessful andenjoyableChristmases I havehadhereand hisbutcheringskillscameinveryusefulwhilepreparingwildpigandvenison forChristmasdinner. Theyarea winningcombinationandworthahugeamountotheproject,andwewouldverymuchliketoseethemouthere againasapartoftheEchoParakeet team.ThiswouldbeaveryusefulcontributionbytheWorldParrotTrust/ ParadisePark. ThelastwildEchofledgedafewdaysago(27thJanuary) theseventhsuccessfully fledgedfromsevennests. The bestproductivityfromthewildbirdsfor wellovertwentyyears. Youwillrecallthatweattemptedadifferent management strategy thisyeartohelpthewildbirds.Inthepastwehavetriedtomaximiseproductivityby doubleclutching.Thisdoesnotalwaysworkandif it does it means thattheyoungofthesecondbroodfledge verylateintheseasonwhenthereisaveryrealriskofthemdyingduringcyclonicweather. I wasunhappy thatas aresultoftheseeggmanipulations notallpairsin thewildwererearingyoungthemselves. Asyouwill beaware it isveryimportanthatpairsreartheirownyoungsinceit helpsmaintainastablepairbondanddevelopagood breedingpair.Wehavealsonotedthatin thewild,chicksinbroodsof twoorthreedonotdoaswellassingle chicks.Sothisyearwe"downbrooded"allpairswithyoung.Weletthemhatchabroodandthenharvested all butoneoftheyoung.Theseharvested youngweretheneitherfostered topairsthathadnoyoung(duetothem failingforonereasonoranother butstill oninfertileordummyeggs)orreared in captivity. In captivitywehaverearedelevenyoungfrombothcaptivebirdsandharvested/ rescuedeggsandyoung.Allof theseareduefor releaseandthefirstgroupof threeyoungweretakenupto campyesterdayafternoonandplaced inthereleaseaviary. Withinminutes thethreeEcho'sreleased lastsummer flewin andlandedonthetopof the aviarytomeetheirnewfriends,withmuchcallingbetween them.I haveheardthismorningthatthealready releasedEcho'sarearoundmostof thetimetakinggreatinterest in thenewbirds. Wehavehadtenoftheelevenhand-reared youngbirdssexedandthereareeightfemales. Someone is smiling uponus.Wehadoriginallyplanned tocaptureupsurplus releasedmalebirds,sincethewild population is skewed towardsmalesandwewanted to balance thesexesasbestwecould.Howeverthisisnotanimmediateproblem andwewill leaveasmanyofthebirdsatlibertyaspossible. Theotheryoungwill begoinguptotheforestfor releaseoverthenextmonthorso.Wewill probablybekeepingthemin thereleasecagefor aweekortendays beforereleaseandthenmonitoringthemintensely for amonth.Theearliestwearegoingto befinishedis goingto belateApril.KirstySisreturningtotheUKattheendof themonthsincesheistotallywhackedandneeds the rest.I will bestayingonuntilearlyMaytokeepeverything tickingover.Thefirstreleaseoflastsummer hasbeen agreatsuccess andthethreebirdsarenowinteractingwithsub-adult wild onesandtheyhavebeenseengoing around in agroupoffourorfive - thethreereleasedbirdswithoneortwowild ones. Wehavealsohadawild birdfeedingatthesupplemental foodhopperwiththereleasedbirds. I will keepyouinformedasthereleases progress. Bestwishes CarlJones. 13

Onthefirsteveningparrot-relateditems(suchasa$100goldcoinshowingtheBahamasAmazon,stainedglassparrots,beautifulrugsmadebyJacquieBlackburnandaporcelalllcockatoo)wereauctioned.Theproceeds,$2,645,wasdonatedtoagraduateawardin avianstudiesattheUniversityof Guelph,Ontario.MarkHagenhadgivensomeof the

mostsought-afteritems.Hiscompany,Rolf.C.Hagen,madeagenerousgesturein donatingtheentireproceedsfromthesalesofHagenproductsatthesymposiumtotheCanadianWorldParrotTrust.InthiswayCWPT'sfundswereswelledby $5,138!CWPT'sstandwasmannedbyMikePearsonandhiswifeSharon.TheyhadanattractivedisplayofT-shirts,videos,booksandotherproductsanddidwellonsalesandmembership.Twentyonenewmembersjollled,andthIrtyfivemembersrenewed,contributingtowardsatotalof$3,164takenonthebooth.

Symposium(West)in Victoria(BritishColumbia)will takeplacefromMay15-17.OverseasspeakersincludeCharlesMunnandRosemaryLow. Wehavehadtenof theelevenhand-rearedyoungbirdssexedandthereareeightfemales.Someoneis smilinguponus.Wehadoriginallyplannedto captureupsurplusreleasedmalebirds,sincethewild populationisskewedtowardsmalesandwewantedtobalancethesexesasbestwecould.Howeverthisis notanimmediateproblemandwewill leaveasmanyof thebirdsat libertyaspossible.Theotheryoungwill begoingupto theforestforreleaseoverthenextmonthor so.Wewill probablybekeepingthemin thereleasecagefor aweekor tendaysbeforereleaseandthenmonitoringthemintenselyfor amonth.Theearliestwearegoingto befinishedis goingtobelateApril. KirstySis returningto theUK attheendof themonthsincesheis totallywhackedandneedstherest.I will bestayingonuntil earlyMaytokeepeverythingtickingover.Thefirstreleaseof lastsummerhasbeenagreatsuccessandthethreebirdsarenowinteractingwith sub-adultwild onesandtheyhavebeenseengoingaroundin agroupof fouror five - thethreereleasedbirdswithoneor twowild ones.Wehavealsohadawildbirdfeedingatthesupplementalfoodhopperwith thereleasedbirds.
