Inthislecture,Iwillrevisittherootsandmotivationsbehindtheuseofmathematicalmodelsinthestudyofepidemics.Iwillillustratehowresearchdrivenbythedesireofsomeindividualstoscaleupwhattheyknowaboutdiseasetransmissionattheindividuallevelcouldbemodifiedtoaccountfortheimpactofdiseasedynamicsathigherlevelsoforganization.

A surprisingresultinvotingtheoryisthatanelectionoutcomemaydependonhowvotesaretalliedaftertheballotsarecast.ThiselectionscenarioisrelevanttotheoutcomeofgolftournamentsbecausetheProfessionalGolfer'sAssociation(PGA)istheonlyprofessionalsportsleagueintheU.S.thatchangesthemethodofscoringdependingontheevent.ThePGA’sstrokeplayandmodifiedStablefordscoringsystemareequivalenttousingdifferentvotingvectorstotallyanelection.ThisequivalenceisdiscussedanddatafromtheMastersandInternationalTournamentsareusedtoexaminetheeffectofchangingthescoringmethodontheresultsofthetournament.
Byfocusingon3-candidateelections,Iwillshowhowelementarylinearalgebraandconvexitycanbeusedtoexplaintheeffectofchangingthevotingvector.Sometimes,regardlessofthevotingvectorused,thesameoutcomewouldhaveoccurred,asinthe1992USPresidentialelection.Canthishappeningolf?Ianswerthisquestionanddeterminewhetherthereexistsagolf-scoringmethodinwhichTigerWoodswouldnothavewonthe1997Masters,ashisperformanceisconsideredoneofthebestever.
