From the Grand Regent

One of my favorite motivational books is The Winner Within: A Life Plan for Team Players by NBAHall of Fame Coach Pat Riley. The book is about Coach Riley’s experiences with the LA Lakers in the1980s and what he learned along the way.

Coach Riley talks about how every individual can impact, and is responsible for, the success of anyorganization. The Winner Within is really about teamwork and life, and has, in many ways, been aninspiration in my life.

In one chapter in particular, Coach Riley talks about “thunderbolts,” those events in life that strikewhen least expected and challenge us to move above and beyond them. One of these thunderboltsrecently struck my life and my family’s life as well.

On January 15, my wife, Cheryl, (also a brother and a 1982 initiate of Beta Kappa chapter) was foundunresponsive; she was the victim of an unknown brain injury. Cheryl spent three weeks in a comabefore slowly waking up from it. She was placed in a brain injury rehabilitation center, and after onemonth, she finally returned home. Cheryl has improved greatly, but still faces many months of outpa-tient therapy. She is expected to fully recover.

Needless to say, it has been a difficult time for us, but also a time when, once again, I am remindedthat the phrase “Kappa Psi is for Life” is much more than words. As difficult as this time was for Cheryland me, once again, without asking, we found the Brotherhood was there for us. We received numer-ous e-mails and cards, including cards signed by entire chapters and Province assemblies. There werealso phone calls of support from all across the country, and several brothers visited Cheryl, even as shelay in a coma in the hospital. I cannot fully express my thanks to all of you for what your support andprayers have meant to us.

Once again, this experience reminds me how much Kappa Psi means and has meant in mylife—through all the thunderbolts and setbacks, in good times and in bad. The Kappa Psi experience issomething you just can’t put a price on. Brotherhood, lifelong friendships and the realization that thegrip of the Order is much more than a handshake can only be realized by experiencing it.

To alumni reading this, I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir. So many of you can probably share simi-lar experiences. But to you collegians, especially those of you graduating this year, make the commit-ment to keep Kappa Psi in your life. As much as Kappa Psi has meant to you during your college days,it will mean so much more during the rest of your life. Don’t give it up! I promise that you too will oneday find that “Kappa Psi is for Life” is much more than words. In fact, one day you may even wonderwhat life would be like without it.

A good place for all brothers to renew or strengthen their bond with the Fraternity is to attend the53rd GCC in Boston. One of the greatest turning points in my Kappa Psi life came when I attended the42nd GCC in South Padre Island, Texas, in 1985. I have not missed a GCC since. It was at my first GCCthat I truly understood what Kappa Psi really is. It’s so much more than our own chapter and Province, because our roots of brotherhood have no limits. Come and experience that!

You will enjoy a fun-filled week with brothers from across the country. And you’ll also have theopportunity to influence the direction of our Fraternity by voting on legislation and electing the nextExecutive Committee officers.

For one week, the Fraternity will be in your hands. Make plans now to join other brothers in Boston,August 7–11. In experiencing a GCC for the first time, you too will take the first step toward realizingthat “Kappa Psi is for Life” is indeed much more than words.

Fraternally,Proud to be your Brother,

David E. MaszkiewiczGrand Regent 2005–2007

More than Words

David E. Maszkiewicz

The Change of Kappa Psi“The times, they are a changing.” This line from a Bob Dylan song rings as true today as it

did 40 years ago when it was written. The world around us is changing. It is constantly chang-ing and it is rapidly changing. This leaves us no choice but to change with it or be left behind.

Change is never easy for most of us, as we become accustomed to the old way of doingthings. Even when the old way is outmoded, we still resist change because it’s easier to dothings as we’ve always done them than to endure the pain that change brings.

To have successful change in an organization, you must first believe you can make achange and that change is necessary for continued growth and improvement. You mustempower yourself with the belief that you can and will do bigger and better things. You mustplan big enough for success to be fruitful and long lived. Success will come if you take thechange or goal seriously.

However, sometimes we forget what our original goal was and we have to change tactics tosucceed or reach our goal. This should not be a major stumbling block. In fact, most success-ful business enterprises alter their plansbefore they reach their goals. The planswe make today may become obsoletebefore we reach our goals, at which time adifferent path for success must be chosen. The most important thing to remember ifthis occurs is that we can successfullychange our path. And remember, themethod used to accomplish a goal maychange but the goal itself does not change.

We must use the resources that areavailable to us to make big enough plans tomeet the demands of a changing world. We must reach out to people and showthem the fraternity world is a world ofgood people doing good things. We must teach them how our Fraternity does its good worksand deeds. But most of all, we must lead by example. We must do the right thing and do itconsistently. We must work efficiently together so we can reach even more people and useour resources even more wisely. By striving for big ideas and goals, working together, andusing our resources properly, we can accomplish our goals and ideas.

The times are changing. Will we be left behind? I certainly hope not.

Fraternally,

Johnny

ASHP Midyear Meeet ing

By Liz Poole

The ASHP midyear meeting was held in sunnyAnaheim, California, at the Anaheim ConventionCenter, December 3–7, 2006. As always, folks at theKappa Psi booth were ready to greet fellow brothersas they browsed the annual expo. This year ExecutiveDirector Scott Long, Grand Counselor BeckyFahrenbruch, and Graduate Member-at-LargeLawrence Brown manned the tables and handed outspecially made Kappa Psi ribbons for brothers’ nametags. The Hearts and Crafts Quilt, the newest nationalphilanthropy project to benefit the Multiple SclerosisFoundation, was on display at the booth as well, though in a much smaller form.

An informal Kappa Psi gathering was held Mondaynight at the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney. Manybrothers came out for an enjoyable evening of fellow-ship and brotherhood. Since the convention center islocated close to the theme park, many Kappa Psibrothers got a chance to visit Disneyland betweenmeetings and seminars.

The ASHP midyear was a great chance to meetbrothers from across the country. New bonds wereformed and old ones were renewed as Kappa Psi gath-ered to advance the profession. The next ASHPmidyear meeting will be held under the glitteringlights of Las Vegas, December 2–6, 2007. ASHP

Spring 2007 MASK OF KAPPA PSI PHARMACEUTICAL FRATERNITY 7

Andrew FrascoTo you, my brother, whom I have not had

the good fortune to meet and speak withpersonally during my travels, I submit foryour consideration this brief sketch enu-merating my past involvement in Kappa Psi.

I was initiated in Province V at Xi chapterat The Ohio State University. I served inleadership positions on the chapter level asvice regent and regent, on the provincelevel as historian and vice satrap of ProvinceV, and on the national level as GraduateMember-at-Large 2003–2005 and as GrandRitualist 2005–2007. I have served as theGrand Council Deputy for Theta chapter atVirginia Commonwealth University inRichmond for two years, and have served asthe Province VII supervisor for 2005–2007.

I have chaired the Graduate RelationsCommittee and the Ritual Committee, andhave overseen, assisted with, and participat-ed in numerous philanthropy projects tobenefit the Special Olympics, MDA, MS, andALS. During 2007–2009, it is my wish toserve our Fraternity as Grand Counselor. Inthis capacity, I hope to continue to assistcollegiate and graduate chapters, as well asProvinces, with updating and understandingtheir local ordinances. It has been anextreme honor serving you as GrandRitualist for the past two years. I look for-ward to serving you and our Order in thefuture.

Ben WelchI was initiated into Gamma Xi chapter in

1968. As a collegian, I served as parliamen-tarian and vice regent. In Province III, I firstserved as the Province delegate to the 36thGCC in New Orleans. Following that I wassatrap for six years.

I was regent of the South CarolinaGraduate chapter for eight years. In 1989, Imoved to take a job at SouthwesternOklahoma State University, PharmacyPractice Department. In Province VII, I’veserved as satrap and GCC Province dele-gate. I am currently the regent of theSouthwestern Graduate chapter.

I believe I am the only brother to serve assatrap for two different Provinces andregent for two different Graduate chapters.Counting the Province meetings in both III

and VII, I have attended 38 consecutiveProvince meetings and 18 consecutiveGCCs.

In 1997, I started the Kappa Psi webpages. During my 10 years as web master, Iset up the e-mail directory; made availableonline most if not all of the forms used bythe Central Office; set up mailing lists forthe Provinces, Executive Committee, andGrand Council Deputies; and established ageneral mailing list for everyone.

Online registration and payment for theGCCs was set up in 1991, along with the var-ious Graduate brother giving levels, includ-ing the annual voluntary dues. I workedwith the Scholarship Committee to set upthe Chapter of the Year form in an Excelspreadsheet.

I have a number of ideas that I feel willgreatly benefit the Fraternity, one of whichis a national pledge project—having pledgesupdate their chapter’s Graduate brothermailing list and sending a copy to theCentral Office. I also believe we shouldestablish a uniform pledge program for allchapters.

Kali JerniganKali Jernigan spent the last two years

Beta Gamma chapter reallyshined this quarter! With the helpof fellow brothers from variousclasses and a fabulous cabinet, many events and activities were car-ried out smoothly and to kick offwinter quarter with a bang.

Brothers let loose and put ontheir ice skates to attend the sur-prise Big Bro Revealing at YerbaBuena Ice Skating Rink. This unfor-gettable experience, filled withslips, chills, laughter, and fun, creat-ed new friendships and reinforcedold ones. This year’s scavengerhunt was also a big hit in a crazysort of way as pledges ran rampantwith their plastic bags, disposablecameras, and group members. Onthe flipside, it brought unity to thegroup and fostered team-building,which we are confident will keepthe pledges going as they crossover through Initiation and beyond.

We also continued our strong tra-dition of philanthropy by sellingValentine’s Day grams and raising$400, and assembling gift basketsto benefit the Asian Women’sShelter. Also in the works are pro-jects that include a quilt square anda $100 donation to the Hearts andCrafts Project to benefit MultipleSclerosis, the Habitat RestorationProject with the Golden GateNational Parks Conservancy, andserving dinner to the disadvantagedat Glide Memorial Church in theTenderloin.

Last but not least, we areextremely excited about hostingthe Province IX meeting. With 59brothers recently initiated, therewill be strong representation fromour school. Our chapter has signedup and maxed out 150 spots from

The URI Relay for Life for theAmerican Cancer Society will takeplace on April 27. Beta Epsilon hasbeen the top fund raising group forthe relay for the past two years.

We would like to welcome ournew GCD for the chapter, Dr.Carsten Evans. We are extremelyproud and excited to have Dr.Evans working as part of our chap-ter. Delta Rho is also proud to wel-come 20 brothers into the KappaPsi family. We held our crossoverevent in January, which included

Did you know that Delta Pi chap-ter is in three different cities? TexasTech University has its school ofpharmacy in Amarillo. Students canspend all four of their pharmacyschool years there, or they canspend their third- and fourth-yearrotations on the satellite campusesin Lubbock and Dallas. Soon toopen in the fall of 2007 is our newsatellite campus in Abilene, wheresome of the class of 2011 will startand spend all four of their pharma-cy school years. There will still be agroup that starts in Amarillo andhas the option of spending P3 andP4 years in Lubbock or Dallas.Delta Pi brothers living on satellitecampuses are experimenting withSkype to communicate with broth-ers on the “mother ship” campus inAmarillo. In past years we’ve usedHealthNet, and last fall we triedconference phone calls. We haveour fingers crossed, hoping thatSkype will work in the long run, even though the system still has afew bugs.

Since we’re still a relatively newchapter, we don’t have an officialnewsletter as of yet. But we man-aged to e-mail some news to someof our alumni in January, and wealso received replies from a few ofthem. Those who replied sharedmilestones in their lives, careerpaths since graduating, willingnessto help with Province VII 2008, andprovided updated address informa-tion.

Congratulations to our facultyadvisor, Dr. Eric MacLaughlin, onthe birth of a new baby; JamieGuyear (2006 graduate) on thebirth of a daughter; Peter Palizo onthe birth of a son; and Julian Vargason the birth of a son. The daughterof Karri Starling (2004 graduate)turned 1 on Valentine’s Day, andMel Smalley (2004 graduate) gavebirth to a daughter.

Delta Pi brothers who are expect-ing include Joyce Fender and MarkKing. Also, Lisa Plasencia and JeffHildebrand (both 2004 graduates)were married November 11, 2006.Miriam Wolters-Horton (2006 grad-uate) was married during the sum-mer of 2006.

For the rest of the semester, wewill elect new officers, decorate thedisplay box for our school, holdosteoporosis screenings for ourschool-wide health fair, compete inthe annual bowling tournament

dinner and an exciting trip to KeyWest. Our newest brothers are:Rachel Ackerman, SerinaBidnick, Kyle Butcher, KristinCipolla, Melinda Deen, JenniferDouma, Amy Everitt, WendyFisher, Gary Foulk, AngelaFratto, Eddy Garcia, JasonGrill, Kevin Hanlon, EliseManee, Emily Marckioli, RyanNowicki, Mellisa Ortega, MabelRodriguez, Uday Talati, andCrystal Walker. At the end of fall quarter, wepinned our Epsilon pledge classand capped off the evening with aPirates of the Caribbean-themedparty for our pledges. The studentlounge was transformed into apirate paradise with cannons andcannonballs, a desert island with apalm tree and parrot, treasurechests filled with precious booty, skeletons, and a Jolly Roger flyingoverhead. There was also an over-sized chocolate fountain and dip-ping foods.

As usual, winter quarter wasdominated by pledge events. Underthe direction of chaplain ElizabethSarles, our pledge class spent sevenweeks learning about theBrotherhood of Kappa Psi. Pledgeslearned about Kappa Psi/Delta Phivia history lessons and quizzesfrom historian Brandon Mutrux, aswell as by decoding pledge memosin Greek created by Brother RobertMancini. Other pledge activitiesincluded having lunch with theirbig brother and great-big brother,

scenic stroll along the coast. One of the highlights of the

pledge period was the pledge-planned and hosted party for activebrothers. The so-called Plan V partywas thrown on February 15 andmarketed as a cure for Valentine’sDay withdrawal. The pledges sup-plied amazing decorations in theform of streamers, carnations, can-dles, and centerpieces. Fingerfoods and virgin drinks wereserved, and a great variety of musicwas played, including guitar solos

by Pledge Robert Lo. In addition, the pledge class serenaded us witha version of I Want it That Waybefore presenting their big broth-ers with a red carnation. We alsoplayed a game where we had todetermine via yes and no questionswhat celebrity name we had postedon our back and then find ourmatching spouse. The eveningwent off without a hitch and wascertainly a hit with the brothers.

As one of their final activities aspledges, our Epsilon class complet-ed the traditional Delta Phi scav-enger hunt around San Diego.Teams of four pledges decipheredclues that directed them to spotsimportant to our local history.Active brothers were stationed ateach location, and pledges neededto answer a question about KappaPsi to obtain the clue to the nextlocation. As their final test, pledgestook an exam testing their knowl-edge of Kappa Psi/Delta Phi histo-ry and symbolism.

In addition to their requiredpledge-only activities, pledges andbrothers got together on January 16for our first-ever Speed Pledgingevent. At this activity pledges rotat-ed to various stations manned bytwo brothers. At each station therewas a theme to help break the “ice”and allow brothers and pledges toget to know one another better.Themes ranged from the typical“favorite foods” and “musicaltastes” to more obscure word-asso-ciation and pretend-Rorschach teststations. All in all, it was a great wayfor brothers and pledges to get toknow one other.

On the philanthropic front, activebrothers participated in a beachcleanup project at South CarlsbadState Beach. Brothers had time toget on the beach, make a differencein the community, and spend timewith each other outside the class-room. Socially, Delta Phi held anIron Chef contest where five teamshad 90 minutes to make a dish withthe secret ingredient: key limes.Dishes included pasta, salads, chicken, and salmon, along withvarious drinks and deserts that fea-tured key limes. The lucky judgeswere alumni Rani Dibbini, LindaNgo, and April Haines, and AJRyan, a fourth-year brother.

Here to Work for YouDuring the past two years I’ve reached many milestones in my life. I graduated from

pharmacy school, completed a residency and, most importantly to all of you, was allowed

to be the voice of collegiate brothers in Kappa Psi. During this term I made great effort to

let the voice of collegians be heard and make a positive impact on this great Fraternity.

I faced many challenges along the way, ranging from transitioning from collegian to

graduate, to representing the voice of brothers in the face of adversity. The transition from

collegian to graduate is one that marks many changes in life. Many people move to a new

location and begin a new life. Many begin families, others continue their training, and still

others stay where they are. With all the chaos that comes with graduating, staying

involved with Kappa Psi is exceptionally challenging.

Over the past year I discovered there are many methods to improve the retention of

involved brothers. One of the most important areas is within the Province. The role of

the Province is often uncertain, but this is one area that can help ease the transition for

collegiate brothers. After all, a great Province fosters great chapters and great brothers

from those chapters. Maintaining involvement may be a daunting task, but it is not

impossible!

Representing the voice of brothers in the face of adversity has been a challenge I was

faced with during this term. I’ve always been told that doing what’s right may not always

be easy, and the easy thing may not always be right. I know most brothers have been in a

situation, whether at chapter, school, work, or home, where they knew what needed to

be done and knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I encourage every brother to go with the

decision you know is right, no matter how hard it may seem. The important thing is that

you can hold your head high when someone holds you accountable for your actions.

Through my term I learned that leadership embodies many qualities—from knowing

when to ask for help to taking a stand for what is right. Some of these I saw in the

Executive Committee (myself included) and others need to be worked on.

Moving forward requires an increase in dialogue and the inclusion of YOUR input.

This great Fraternity has always needed strong leadership. Always remember, the

Executive Committee is here to work for you!
