The Marshall Court Refers to the time period where John Marshall served on the Supreme Court, while upholding Federalist beliefs. During this period the Federal Government’s power and influence over states grew due to Marshall’s decision in key court cases. John Marshall became a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1801 and served until his death until 1835.

McCulloch V. Maryland (1819) Marshall ruled that

states did not have the power to interfere with institutions or actions of the Federal government. His ruling established that the fed. gov. was “supreme” to states. This is known as the Supremacy Clause= .

Court case involved the state of New Hampshire trying to make Dartmouth College a public university operated by the state.

Dartmouth v. Woodward (1819)

Marshall ruled states could not interfere with contracts.

Dartmouth received its contract or charter from the King of England before the creation of the U.S. and that states could not interfere with this charter or contract.

Daniel Webster of Massachusetts argued on behalf of Dartmouth in the case. Of the 223 cases he argued before the Supreme Court, he won about half of them.

Gibbons v. Ogden (1824) Court case involved a

competing Ferry boat companies, one operating with a state license and another operating with a federal license. The state of New York forbid the company operating with a federal license to operate in New York State waters.

Gibbons v. Ogden (1824)Marshall ruled that fed. gov. had the power to overlook trade between states and also travel between states via waterways. This broadened the Commerce Clause.
