£8,000 - 12,000 €8,800 - 13,000 US$9,700 - 15,000

Provenance Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy (1769-1839) Given to one of Hardy’s servants and later returned to the Hardy family. Thence by decent to Rodney Legg (1947-2011) a distant relative of the Hardy family, a campaigner and an author of 125 books on the history and landscape of Dorset, and chairman of the Open Space Society. Thence by direct decent to the present owner. Nelson’s pigtail (or queue), on permanent exhibition at the Maritime Museum, Greenwich, was cut off after his death at the Battle of Trafalgar 21 October 1805.

It was Nelson’s dying wish that this lock of hair should be delivered to Lady Emma Hamilton and that the British government would see that Emma and their child would be looked after in a manner fit for their station in life. Sadly for Emma and Horatia, the government would offer no support and Emma would run up truly huge debts after Nelson’s death. Eventually, she ended up in prison for debt and died shortly afterwards. The pigtail at Greenwich shows his sandy-coloured hair, bound with black ribbon, which is tied in a bow. Surgeon William Beatty records in his ‘Narrative of the Death of Lord Nelson’ that Nelson asked that Lady Hamilton should have his hair. Small locks of hair were given to relations and close friends, and some pieces were mounted in special mourning rings and lockets. West Milton referred to on the hand-written note is a village located in West Dorset relatively close to the Hardy family estate inPortersham.

19THOMAS LUNY (BRITISH, 1759-1837)HMS Bellerophon leaving Torbay with the defeated Emperor Napoleon aboard, 26th July 1815 signed and dated ‘Luny 1827’ (lower left) oil on panel 30.2 x 41cm (11 7/8 x 16 1/8in).

£6,000 - 8,000 €6,600 - 8,800 US$7,300 - 9,700

Provenance Private collection, UK. Despite a service career as illustrious as any fighting ship in the Royal Navy, Bellerophon is principally remembered as the vessel to whose captain Emperor Napoleon surrendered after Waterloo and which then conveyed him to Plymouth, via Torbay, on the first stage of his long journey into exile. One of the fourteen ‘Arrogant’ class 74-gun Third Rates designed by Surveyor Slade in 1758, Bellerophon was built in Edward Greaves’ yard on the Medway at Frindsbury, near Rochester, where her keel was laid in May 1782. Launched on 17th October 1786, she was measured by her builder at 1,613 tons and was 168 feet in length with a 47 foot beam. Completed at Chatham in March 1787 at a total cost of £38,608, she was laid up for three years until fitted for sea in August 1790 and commissioned under Captain Thomas Pasley. By 1794 Pasley had been promoted to Rear-Admiral and Bellerophon acted as his flagship at the battle of the ‘Glorious First of June’ where she engaged the huge 110-gun Révolutionnaire alone for an hour-and-a-half before the Russell and the Marlborough came to her assistance. Because of the damage she had sustained aloft, Bellerophon had then to withdraw from the scene but her conduct at this opening fleet action of the War laid the foundations for what was to follow. By the time Nelson located the French fleet anchored in Aboukir Bay on 1st August 1798, Bellerophon was commanded by Captain Henry Derby and when he took his ship in to engage the enemy she found herself pitted against Admiral Bruey’s 120-gun flagship L’Orient. In a

fierce action exactly reminiscent of what had happened at the ‘Glorious First of June’, Bellerophon pounded her greatly superior adversary but was completely dismasted in so doing. Despite heavy casualties, including Captain Derby, she remained at her station and was the nearest vessel to L’Orient when the latter finally blew up during the night. Repaired and refitted, she was continually in action until Trafalgar where, under Captain John Cooke, she fought nobly, first against the combined fire of four enemy vessels, then in a spectacular duel with L’Aigle and, finally, with the Spanish Monarca which surrendered to her. Her gallant fight cost her the second highest casualty list at the battle and amongst the dead was Captain Cooke himself. After extensive repairs at Plymouth, she returned to sea and, by the War end, it was said that “during the period 1793-1815, she saw more action than any other ship.” Her enduring claim to fame however came when, after fleeing the field at Waterloo, the defeated Emperor Napoleon made his way to Rochefort where, on 15th July [1815], he surrendered to Captain Maitland of the Bellerophon. Maitland had been sent to Rochefort when intelligence reached the Admiralty that Napoleon was planning to embark there for America; in the event, the Emperor chose to place himself under the protection of British law, whereupon Maitland sailed for England, Napoleon catching his final glimpse of the French coast (off Ushant) on 23rd July. The English coast was sighted the same evening and, early the next morning, Bellerophon anchored in Torbay where Maitland awaited his orders. As soon as news of the former Emperor’s arrival became known, presumably by means of a careless word ashore from one of the ship’s officers, large numbers of small craft packed with curious spectators made for the ship and provided a carnival atmosphere all around her. Two days later, on the 26th, Maitland weighed anchor for Plymouth where he and his celebrated passenger arrived within hours; Napoleon remained aboard Bellerophon for twelve days whilst the government decided what to do with him and, on 7th August, he transferred into H.M.S. Northumberland and embarked for St. Helena and exile. With the War over and the need for warships sharply decreased, Bellerophon was afterwards fitted out as a convict hulk and served thus for the remainder of her career, being renamed Captivity in 1824, until broken up in 1836. Two works with the same subject and composition, also by Luny, have sold at Christie’s in 2007 and 2010 for £44,000 and £38,000 respectively.

20THOMAS BUTTERSWORTH (BRITISH, 1768-1828)An English two-decker and an armed naval cutter in the Tagus off the Belem Tower signed ‘T Buttersworth’ (lower left) oil on canvas 42.8 x 53.9cm (16 7/8 x 21 1/4in).

£5,000 - 7,000 €5,500 - 7,700 US$6,000 - 8,500

This work depicts one of Thomas Buttersworth’s favourite locations, the mouth of the River Tagus and, in particular, the historic Belem Tower. Resembling a fortress and indeed often referred to as ‘Belem Castle’, this picturesque landmark was actually built as a fortified lighthouse and formed the apex of a triangle of three structures intended to guard the approaches to Lisbon. Begun by order of King Manuel I (1515-20) during the first year of his reign and completed in 1521, the tower originally stood on an island in the middle of the Tagus until the course of the river was diverted by an earthquake in 1777, resiting it to its present location adjacent to the northern bank. Designed by Diego and Francisco Arruda in the Manueline style – it is, in fact, Portugal’s only pure Manueline building – the tower is decorated with elaborate symbols of national as well as royal power including armillary spheres [King Manuel’s badge of honour], crosses of the Military Order of Christ and even some naturalistic elements such as a rhinoceros, the first such representation in stone known in

Europe. Subsequently used as a prison and then a telegraph station, occupying French troops destroyed the upper two stories in 1807 and even though these were later reconstructed, Buttersworth depicts the truncated tower just as it appeared to him and his contemporaries. Thomas Buttersworth was born on the Isle of Wight on 5th May 1768 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in August 1795. He joined his first ship, the brand-new frigate Caroline then fitting out at Deptford, as an Able Seaman, a rate which clearly recognised his ability and perhaps indicated some previous mercantile experience. After only three months in Caroline, he was appointed Master-at-Arms and, in 1800, was made a midshipman, a rare promotion from the ‘lower deck’ at that time. Invalided home from Minorca later that same year, he appears to have left the navy as a result although the nature of his infirmity is not known. Despite his subsequent career as a marine painter, the large number of Buttersworth’s paintings – both oils and watercolours – which exist from the period 1797-1800 confirms that he was producing a significant output whilst still serving in the navy. Moreover, his many views of the battle of Cape St. Vincent (14th February 1797), the blockading squadron off Cadiz and of British naval activity in and around the Tagus strongly suggests that he witnessed those events in person. Undoubtedly, his own years with the fleet had given him a graphic understanding of ships and sea warfare to the extent that becoming a professional artist appeared entirely logical when his health seemingly prevented any further service with the Royal Navy.

Rover of the Seas was a wooden barque built in 1869 in Sunderland by Thompson, the premier shipping firm in Sunderland. Wooden planked over an iron frame, 136.9x27.7x16.2 feet. Registered 417 tons. Built under Lloyd’s Special Survey, she was classified as A1 which meant she could carry dry and perishable goods. She traded mainly with South America. Pilot Jack is flying at the foremast peak, Thompson’s house flag at the head of the mainmast. Red ensign at after peak. Underneath that the red and white striped pennant signifies that the four flag hoist at the mizzenmast peak is employing the recently introduced Commercial Code of signals which read HPKF, the correct identification for Rover of the Seas. Sold to J.Gaudin of Sunderland in 1879, she foundered at sea late December 1885 whilst outward bound from Victoria in the Virgin Islands for Liverpool; all crew were saved.

The Battle of Cape St. Vincent, fought on 14th February 1797, was a much-needed British victory at a time when the war with Revolutionary France and her allies was not going well. At the end of 1796, French and Spanish ships were ordered to Brest to support an invasion of Ireland. The French, based at Toulon, slipped through the Straits of Gibraltar successfully but Admiral Sir John Jervis, cruising off Cape St. Vincent with 15 ships-of-the line including HMS Victory, was determined to intercept the Spaniards and stop the two enemy fleets from joining up. On 13th February 1797 Jervis was joined by Commodore Nelson’s squadron from Gibraltar, and together they engaged the Spanish fleet the following day. By late afternoon, Jervis’s victory over the much larger enemy fleet of 27 ships-of-the-line was assured thanks to the efficiency of his own Mediterranean Fleet and Nelson’s brilliant daring at a critical moment during the battle.

It was here that Nelson displayed his grasp of strategy combined with fearless personal leadership for the first time. As the action got under way, he realised that – unseen by Jervis – the bulk of the Spanish fleet was making ready to flee the scene and escape. Without a moment’s hesitation Nelson took his ship Captain out of the battle line and, closely followed by Collingwood in Excellent and Troubridge in Culloden, opened fire upon the leading Spanish ships. After a furious duel, Nelson laid Captain alongside the 80-gun San Nicolas and personally led his boarding party over the two ships’ sides. Meanwhile, the larger Spanish 114-gun San Josef had collided with and become entangled with San Nicolas, whereupon Nelson, having first accepted the surrender of the San Nicolas, then led his men onto San Josef’s decks and promptly took her as well. It was a masterstroke and, in the aftermath of victory, Nelson emerged from it with promotion, official recognition and a reputation which would ultimately become a legend.

This work depicts the engagement off Barbados between HMS Osprey and the French privateer Egyptienne. Having spotted four

French ships cruising in the area, Osprey embarked on a great chase which culminated in the engagement shown here.

The other three ships escaped, whilst Egyptienne received a pounding from Osprey’s guns. However, the French privateer still managed to flee the combat and Osprey was unsuccessful in chasing her down. Three days later,

Egyptienne was spotted by HMS Hippomenes. A two day chased followed, culminating in several hours of combat before Egyptienne and her crew surrendered. She would go on to become the British prison ship Antigua

One Captain George Cobb took this splendid Clipper Ship from the Stocks and made several very fast pasages[sic] in her. Alas he died on board en route from China and was succeeded by a Dutchman named Ganzwyk. He was no match for Cobb his passage from London to Shanghai took 155 days against Cobbs 98! In 1866 The Wild Deer was sold to the Albion Shipping Co. which later in 1882 merged with the renowned Shaw Saville Line. In the 70’s she was much used as a passenger carrier to Australia and New Zealand. Her end came in 1883 when she was wrecked off the coast of Co. Down Ireland.’

£12,000 - 18,000 €13,000 - 20,000 US$15,000 - 22,000

A letter from the artist accompanying the lot describes this scene as follows: ‘On the left the 5th Battle Squadron under Admiral Evan-Thomas steaming away towards the distant main Battle fleet, next Warrior making her way out of action surrounded by the splashes of the German shells, Warspite with her helm jambed to starboard is turning circles close astern still in hot action. On the right is the smoke of the German fleet hull down below the horizon.’

Provenance Commissioned from the artist by Mr Chadwick Kershaw in 1917. Private collection, UK. After the unification of Germany under Prussian supremacy in 1870, the new country lacked one of the attributes of a Great Power. In consequence the Imperial German Navy was established in the following year. From 1872 a building programme was instituted that by the mid-1880s had produced a respectable, but lightly-armed fleet of 95 vessels, none of them larger than a frigate. The development of trade worldwide required that the fleet should be able to protect Germany’s sea routes and the requirements of her industry for raw materials brought about the acquisition of colonies in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, which also served as coaling stations for its ships. The possession of a navy permitted the projection of German power across

the world and in turn was vital to Germany’s scramble for ‘a place in the sun’ in competition with the United Kingdom and France, which already had colonial empires.

Page 75: The Marine Sale - Bonhams

In 1898 a series of remodellings of the Imperial German Navy began that introduced battleships and other types of vessels that indicated a desire to rival the British Royal Navy, at that time the largest and most powerful naval force in the world. An arms race between the two nations developed from 1904 and German naval building programmes were stepped up with a view to matching the Royal Navy not only in numbers, but also in the size, armament and speed of its ships. The United Kingdom out-built Germany in this race. At the start of the First World War in August 1914 the Imperial German Navy possessed 22 pre-Dreadnoughts, 14 Dreadnought-type battleships and 4 Battle Cruisers plus numerous smaller vessels including the beginnings of a substantial submarine fleet. From the beginning of the First World War British naval strategy was to confine the German navy to its bases, denying it access to the Atlantic and at the same time to blockade German ports so as to shut off imports of raw materials, while simultaneously protecting the UK’s own trade routes. The IGN realised that it could not challenge the entire British Grand Fleet based in the Orkney Isles, but it hoped that its High Seas Fleet - the component operating in the North Sea -

could lure part of the British force into a trap and destroy it before its comrades arrived. On 31st May 1916 Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty’s Battle Cruiser squadron engaged Vice-Admiral Hipper’s Battle Cruiser squadron off the Danish peninsula of Jutland. Beatty forged ahead, but on observing the whole of the High Seas Fleet behind Hipper, he retired, drawing the Germans onto Admiral Sir John Jellicoe’s Grand Fleet, which was racing to support Beatty. In the early evening, the two fleets engaged and although British casualties in ships and men were higher than German losses, the High Seas Fleet retired to Wilhelmshaven and never came out in force again during the remainder of the war. German naval strategy turned to submarine warfare. We are grateful to Dr Andrew Cormack for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

In the months preceding the outbreak of the First World War, the United Kingdom, France and Russia were keen to ensure the neutrality of the Ottoman Empire. The Central Powers - Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire - were keen to bring in the Turks, in the event of war, as a threat to Russia’s southern flank. Britain and France were also concerned for their naval domination of the Mediterranean and any threat to the Suez Canal. From 1860, Turkey had been regarded as ‘the sick man of Europe’ and had been little regarded by the more highly-developed nations, but its strategic position remained important because it controlled the only ice-free supply route to Russia. In July 1914 the Ottoman Empire allied itself with Germany against Russia in return for military and naval assistance and formally joined the Central Powers against all of the Allies on 31st October. German successes during the first months of the war in France, Belgium and Russia prompted an Allied strategy aimed at eliminating the Ottomans, who were seen as a weak link in the Central Alliance,

and this was to be achieved by the capture of Constantinople, the Ottoman capital, by means of a naval expedition through the Dardanelles Straits. British and French naval assets attempted to force the waterway in March 1915 but were repelled, principally by skilfully laid mine fields and well-served, although obsolete, artillery. Some of which was manned by German gunners, who were part of a military mission intended to modernise and up-skill the Ottoman Army. The combined fleet lost three battleships sunk and three others were severely damaged. This rebuff led to a change of strategy that required the Army to land and advance parallel to the Straits thereby taking the coastal defences in the rear and eliminating them so as to allow the ships undisputed passage along the waterway. Planning and assembling the force for the landings took about a month, which the Turks used to reinforce their positions. The main landings were made on 25th April 1915 on the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula at Cape Helles, where a substantial beach-head was formed but held in check by Turkish forces occupying the higher

ground inland. A flanking force made up of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed at Gaba Tepe, subsequently named ANZAC Cove, on the western shore of the peninsula. Its penetration inland was equally problematic. As land artillery was in short supply, the naval escorting force provided as much support as possible with its own guns, but target identification and accurate shooting were difficult. British and Commonwealth troops remained in position despite unbreakable Turkish resistance and mounting casualties from appalling weather, until the turn of the year. The ANZAC positions were evacuated on 20th December and Cape Helles on 9th January 1916. Both departures were achieved, against expectations, with minimal casualties. We are grateful to Dr Andrew Cormack for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
