St Mary’s Open Day originally planned for 17th March has been rescheduled for next term. Next week’s Marian will confirm a new date in Term 2. You may have heard from your child or read in the Marian this year that our theme for 2014 is We are the Hands of e are the Hands of e are the Hands of e are the Hands of Christ Christ Christ Christ. This idea grew out of our desire to be a community that is committed to social justice - a community that sincerely wants to help others even if it means going without some things ourselves! Each year we devise a theme that reflects the type of community engagement and service in which we hope to become involved. Telling everyone about our theme reminds us of our Christian obligations to reach out to others. This reminder also makes us more accountable to the wider community if we make our intentions known to all! During Lent we want to put into ‘action’ the theme We are the Hands of Christ We are the Hands of Christ We are the Hands of Christ We are the Hands of Christ! This year, with our new student leadership structure, I have been totally ‘blown away’ by our student leaders (including our SRC leaders) and their willingness to serve their community in genuine ways. Did you know that it was their idea to hold the Casual Dress Day/Fundraiser for the CFA volunteers? In taking part in this event, every student and staff member was contributing to a local cause by supporting the tireless efforts of the CFA volunteer workers. The students and staff rallied as one and took up the invitation to wear something red for the occasion. We raised more than $500 $500 $500 $500 and our assembly last Friday afternoon left us in no doubt that everyone wants to contribute to this worthy cause. A sea of red! We all know, though, that there is even more for us to do globally! When we reflect on the many social justice issues in today’s society including the abject poverty in many parts of Australia and the world, the natural disasters that beset some communities, not to mention the impact that war and conflict have on so many other innocent people I am reminded of how lucky we are and that, as Christians, we are called to share what we have for the common good. Each year, during Lent, all Catholic schools traditionally get behind the Project Compassion cause. This initiative is sponsored by Caritas Internationalis. Each year all schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne are invited to celebrate Catholic Education Week in the week of St Patrick’s Feast Day. It is a time when we get to showcase what is great about our schools! As in previous years, a representative group of students will travel to St Patrick’s Cathedral to join all the other schools in prayer at the annual Catholic Education Week mass and be part of some of the celebrations. One of our key involvements is the annual Art Exhibition which a number of our students will enter and display their art work. Watch this space! This week and next week there will be three camps conducted (Yrs 7, 8 and 10). Due to the bush fires earlier this term we had to postpone the Yr. 7 camp which was rescheduled for this week. Accordingly, the Yr .7 and Yr. 8 groups went off to their respective camps yesterday (Wednesday) and will be back on Friday. The weather forecast for both venues (Albury and Halls Gap) is much more pleasant than some of the weather we have had earlier this month. I wish both groups well. Next week the Yr. 10 students and staff will head off to Phillip Island for their leadership camp.

By the end of the year they will have participated in Textiles, ICT, Woodwork, Drama, Music and Art. This year our team has set a priority to raise the profile of Numeracy. The emphasis on Numeracy and the development of a more personalised learning approach is underway. Students will be participating in formal diagnostic assessments from ACER to allow teachers to know exactly which skills a student needs to be taught next. We will also be organising some activities for parents to attend later in the year. A group of parents met with Mrs Lisa Creak, P-2 Literacy Leader, last Tuesday morning and had a great discussion about how to help their child learn to read at home. Parents enjoyed the opportunity to find out what teachers say and do to help children get underway with early reading strategies.
