March 4, 2018 - The Third Sunday of Lent

Lent is a season when the Church invites its members to reflect and live the “three pillars” of Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving.

These pillars help support a full and active Christian Life. During Lent, we try to repair and strengthen these three pillars or “disciplines,” because they help people become better disciples of the Lord.

Prayer is a conversation with God. Make a good habit of daily prayer . Read the psalms, and each Lent learn one or two by heart. Pray the words that Jesus and Mary prayed daily. Make an effort to sing well when you come and worship in church. St. Catherine said once that singing is praying twice.

To prepare Himself for the mission of the Father, Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days and nights. As Christians grow up, they need to learn traditional healthy ways to fast. When we fast, we deny ourselves some food or good thing that satisfies our physical craving(s). We remind ourselves of how dependent we are on God’s good gifts, which always must be shared fairly and never taken for granted.

Almsgiving means “shar ing compassion.” It is more than giving away the things we do not need. It means giving away some things that we do need because someone else also may need them. It means giving from ourselves even though it may be sacrificial.

Our parish’s youth are now part of “Life Teen” – a National Catholic ministry to teens. This Lent, Life Teen has joined with The Living Person to invite teenagers and all Catholics to a Lenten Challenge, called 1-1-1. This refers to the following:

• Sacrificing one thing that satisfies our pleasures. • Choosing one devotional or prayer to say every day. • Focusing on one sin that holds us back from a closer relationship with God.

I invite each one of us to join this challenge, so to enter more deeply into this Lenten Season with Jesus.

Saint Augustine said that fasting and almsgiving are the two “wings” that help our prayers “fly to heaven.” Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving go together. They are ways we ask God to root out selfishness from our hearts. They are ways we Christians are invited to live the fullness of God’s spirit in our souls.

The Scrutinies Parishioners attending Noon Mass on 3/4, 5:00 Mass on 3/10, and 9:00 Mass on 3/18 (the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent) will share time with the RCIA group as they prepare to be welcomed into the Church.

The readings focus on the themes of baptism and repentance. The Gospel passages for these three Sundays include the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:5-42), the man born blind (John 9:1-41), and the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45). These are the “scrutiny” Sundays. The scrutinies celebrate conversion and offer our Elect an opportunity for introspection along with time for prayer, reflection, repentance, and the exorcisms (a series of blessings conferred to strengthen them against the power of temptation, sin, and Satan; to lead them ever closer to Christ – the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and to deepen their decision and desire to love God above all else).

The Elect are asked to ponder the Word of God in their hearts, to know Christ who came to save the lost, to confess themselves to be sinners, to reject all that is displeasing to God, to ask the Holy Spirit to help them overcome their weaknesses, to learn how to please God, and to put their hope in Christ, finding peace and holiness in Him. The parish community is also asked at this time to seek continued conversion of heart so the weak may be strengthened, the broken restored, the lost found, and the found redeemed.

Every meeting starts with a rosary, a 15- minute spiritual exercise, 30 minutes for discussion and 15- minutes of challenges among your peers. The next King’s Men meeting will take place on Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 PM in the Parish Meeting Center.

The Disciple Maker Index Survey Deadline March 5

Please take part in our parish’s Disciple Maker Index, a 10-

15 minute online survey: • Go to www.disciplemakerindex.com

• Or pick up a paper copy in the parish office or the St. Katharine Drexel Room in church.

• Complete/Return the survey by March 5.

The survey will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and provide feedback on the parish’s efforts to help you grow. All responses will be confidential and the parish will only receive information about the community as a whole. We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to the parish and our various ministries as we plan ahead and try to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this spring/summer at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish. Thank you!

We are beginning a

Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayer shawl ministries began in 1998 by people who had both compassion for others and a love of knitting/crocheting. People gather and pray for shawl recipients as they begin making them. These intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl, and upon completion shawls are given to those undergoing medical procedures, those who need comfort after a loss, or those enduring times of stress. We would like to start such a ministry at St. Joseph parish. Please join us at one of two organizational meetings in the St. John Neumann Room in Church:

Monday, March 12 at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, March 13 after the 9 a.m. Mass

The final schedule will be determined by the organizational meetings. If you would like more info or are interested but cannot make either meeting, please contact Carol Grigson at 610-269-5413 or [email protected].

Prime Timers Our next Meeting is on March 7 at 2:00 PM. Our activity will be a presentation by Arlene Rengert representing the Laundromat Library League. St. Joseph’s seniors meet in the Parish Meeting Center behind the school from September to June for activities and socialization. We will meet at a local restaurant in December for our holiday luncheon and provide movies during the summer months for those not on vacation. Different activities and club reports are provided at our monthly meetings. Membership is only $15 for the year and is open to all those age 50+. New potential members and visitors are free to enjoy the companionship and socialization. Our new members for March, April, and May are free. In June we will have our inside picnic. Please call Mary at 610-269-3650 or Paul at 610-873-2794 for additional information.

40 Days for Life Ash Wednesday was the beginning of Lent and also the start of the Spring campaign for 40 Days for Life (40 DFL). 40 DFL is a time of prayer, fasting and standing vigil at abortion clinics throughout the United States and other countries to bring awareness of the killing of babies in the womb. The Planned Parenthood Clinic in West Chester performs abortions at its Wayne & Market Streets location every Friday. The Spring campaign will end on Palm Sunday, March 25. St. Joseph Parish has participated in 40 DFL since it became a national event in 2007. It is very important that we show our resolve to end abortion and you can do this by participating in the Spring Campaign.

Saturday, March 24 has been selected as St. Joseph Parish day for prayer and vigil at Planned Parenthood in West Chester. More information in next week's bulletin. Please call Pat DiPietro at 610-269-2093 with any questions or for more information.

If your parish celebrates the Mass for the First Scrutiny for catechumens preparing for Baptism at the Easter vigil, you may hear the Gospel story of Jesus speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well; someone who supposedly is of the wrong gender, wrong religion, and has lived the wrong life. The woman is overwhelmed by guilt and shame. And yet Jesus speaks to her and offers her “living waters” to quench her spiritual thirst. The living water that Jesus gives is new life through the Holy Spirit; a life that is accepted, forgiven, loved and eternal. Good stewards of their life in Christ remain mindful of their own spiritual thirst. They listen to Jesus who speaks to them just as He spoke with the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus has living water for us today. He encourages us to come and drink. Are you thirsty? Are you ready to listen to Him? (International Stewardship Council’s February Newsletter)
