From the editor!

“a topic that effects us all”

Trying to explain how to find a particular location is hard enough in a mother tongue, if you are to master English as a second language, this topic certainly holds relevance.

From getting directions on how to find the location of an interview to providing a client with directions to find your office, it’s a topic that effects us all.

At this point I can help you by telling you that fortunately there are certain set phrases and sentence constructions that can be learnt with a lexical approach. That’s the good news, however learning to apply requires you to practice.

When piecing this course together I tried to fuse two concepts, that of providing the student with the ability to apply what was being taught but also to involve a high level of role

play tasks. This was done so that the student could also learn about voice tones used in the English language. !Of course grammar takes prominence but a student needs to also be aware of how voice tones effect the meaning of a sentence and the importance of this subject in the context of this course. !!

Objectives “confidence building”

This class has incorporated two of our most popular lesson plans, “The Novel” which comes highly recommended and “Di-rections” providing essential grammar structures and vocab-ulary applied both in formal and informal context.

This is a story in which you will assume the role of the main character. The story maps your journey from Monday to Wednesday at work and helps you to identify with how to provide directions in English, particularly useful if you have a high level of interaction with clients.

During your week you will be given a series of tasks that you must complete, these are based on role play. You will identify with a map that has been pro-vided on page 8 and these tasks will relate to some of the buildings featured on this map.

These specialised tasks will involve you interacting with clients, putting your house for sale, applying currency to the English language and much more.

Everyone learns at a different pace, someones skill is someone else's chal-lenge, we have based this course on 3 days however some students may complete this course faster or slower than others.

In our experience it can prove more beneficial to listen to the teacher asking questions rather than you reading the questions. We have provided both op-tions and for those of you who would like a larger copy of the map there will be an optional link provided if required.

You will be required to improvise your role play tasks to add a degree of real-ism to these tasks. This will help you to achieve the desired voice tones that can very often effect the outcome.

Why do I need to know how to provide directions?

The significance of this lesson plan is based on the ability to understand and to interact with a client providing them with the necessary information required to find your location.

If you are preparing for an exam, immigrat-ing or need a greater understanding of English used in the workplace, this is a lesson plan of importance.!

Social

You can apply this information in social context, from arranging to meet friends to organising an event.

In reality this lesson plan is a fundamental need within the learning process, we hope that you enjoy it and that it has value to you . Please remember that at the end of this course we would appreciate it if you could leave a comment on our website. Your feedback is so important to us and gives other students the ability to learn from your experience.

Thank you

Monday

You are at work and your first task is to phone “First Estate Agents” and place your house for sale with them. Provide the estate agent with the necessary directions to find your property.

You will need to:

• Introduce yourself

• Set up an appointment

• Provide directions to find your property

Remember that this task has two func-tions, the first is to demonstrate empa-thetic voice tones, this task will help you to understand more about telephone manner. The second is the ability to pro-vide the necessary directions.

Hints

Look at the following transitions:

• First of all you need to…….

• Then you will need to…….

• After that take the ……… turning on your right/ left.

• Following that you need to……….

!Transitions refer to stages and help to break the instructions into stages. This helps with understanding from the au-diences point of view.

We often support our actions with ges-tures and facial expressions in this type

of scenario, when we are using a phone we cannot, so your voice is the only tool. This is why the target tones take prece-dent.

Page 11: The Map

Role Play TasksTask B

The agent is new to your area and asks you to provide directions to “City Hall”. Provide directions from your house to that location.

Task C

You receive a phone call from a client, they require you to provide directions from the Train station to your office.

Role play this task, answer the phone call:

Good morning this is “Reflection Architects”, ………… speaking, how can I help you?

Remember to use your voice to reflect empathetic value. Your client can tell if you sound happy, sad, bored etc. This can reflect directly on productivity and output so practice with your teacher to hit the target voice tone.

!

The client has made their way to your office. They are sit-ting down waiting for you at reception, approach the client and greet them, introduce yourself and ask them to follow you to a meeting room.

An example:

Good morning, you must be Mr Smith, pleased to meet you. My name is Mr Jones and I am the assistant Architect here at “Re-flection Architects”.

I hope you didn’t have too many problems finding the office, it can be a little difficult sometimes with the one way system. Can I offer you a tea or a coffee?

Please follow me the meeting room it’s just at the end of the cor-ridor.

This task has a real focus on the voice tones used, practice with your teacher to hit the target sound. It’s not the text that is so important here but how you say the words that really count.

Your client needs to hear reassuring voice tones that reflect con-fidence. Sounding monotone could effect the outcome of your meeting with this client.

You could apply subjects that “break the ice” such as the weather a common topic used for discussion in Business english.

Practicing a great introduction can influence a phone call, a con-ference call, or a face to face meeting.

“ Practice your introduction with your teacher”

Place your order

You must order 3 items, one from each section. To practice the use of curren-cy, list all the prices on the menu after the task.

Hints:

• Could I have……

• I would like……..

• Use “and” if there is more than one item requested.

• We apply a modal such as “can or could” this gives us a polite sentence construc-tion.

Tuesday Task1 It’s Tuesday morning and your Manager wants you to go to the Supermarket and purchase some black bags for the office.

Tell your teacher how to get there. Don’t forget to use transitions:

Then/ next/ after that/ following that

We use transitions to mark the stages of an instruction. This is also good practice for delegating tasks, working on presen-tations and providing general instruc-tions.

Task 2 It’s 4pm and you need to get some headache tablets from the Pharmacy. Tell your teacher how to get there from your of-fice. Following this task you have to phone the Pharmacy and find out what their opening and closing hours are.

This task is about making a request, you should use a modal such as can or could as it is more polite. Practicing phone usage is very good for learning about your voice tones as you cannot use gestures or body language to help you to ex-press.

Wednesday The Presentation

You have been asked to do a presenta-tion. It’s a training task in front of your team, to demonstrate the differences between the features and benefits of any product.

Your task is to show the differences between an Iphone and a Samsung smart phone.

This task will demonstrate the impor-tance of comparatives and superlatives and how we use this topic in a work environment.

Your teacher will supply you with a for-mat, please try your best to work from this document.

Task 2 It’s Wednesday afternoon and your task is to phone a client and leave a message for them to call you back. It’s regarding a meeting that you want to set up for next Monday the 15th of July.

Select a venue and a time to meet and suggest it to them. Don't forget to leave your contact details:

07954 370 1285

!Empathy

Your voice tones should reflect the way that you feel. Give value to your client leave a message that reflects this quality.

A client can tell how keen and enthusi-astic you are. A monotone voice tone here could demonstrate arrogance or that you are not really that keen to meet at all.
