bizarrefireballincidentin1797.InhisarticleforSedgleyLocalHistorySociety'swebsite,thelateTrevorGengespeculatedthatStephenwasanancestorofStephenCoxtheSafemakerofDudleyRoadSedgley."OnMondayApril23rd1797,intheafternoonduringaviolentthunderstorm,whichseemstohavebeengeneralthroughoutStaffordshireandWorcestershire,aballoffirecamedownthechimneyofStephenCox,anailorofSedgley,atthetimeheandhiswifeweresitting,andtheirchildwassleepingonachair,bythefireside.Onhearinganuncommonlyloudclapofthunderandanextraordinarynoiseinthechimney,themotherprovidentiallyandinaninstantsnatchedupthechild,wherebyitslifewassaved,asthepillowuponwhichitwaslainwasmuchscorchedandmanyofthebricksfromthetopofthechimneyhadfallenuponandaboutit.Theelectricfluid,indifferentdirections,passedthroughtwohousesadjoining,inoneofwhich,attractedbyanail,itpenetratedthedoorofabackkitchenandforcedoutapieceofthedoor(whichnowappearsasifithadbeencutoutwithaknife)andpartiallymelted,initspassage,thewardsofthelockandthekeywhichwasinit.Partoftheleadofthewindowsofallthethreehouses,bothatthebackandinfront,waslikewisemelted,andapieceofthewindowframeofoneofthemsplitoff."
