PARISH MATTERS

At the May meeting Cllrs. Mrs Patricia Ridger and Mr Iain Davidson were elected to remain chair and vice chair respectively of the Parish Council.

We remain a full council of seven and hope that we will be seeing some of you at our meetings during the year.

BEST KEPT VILLAGE

We have entered for the Best Kept village compe-tition, your gardens as always are looking beauti-ful so we need to concentrate on the public areas too. Some residents work really hard to tend these areas and this is most appreciated. Please, if you see any litter would you pick it up.

LIBRARY VAN

The library van visits the village once a month and has two stops in Ludford, the Black Horse and the end of Chapel Lane. The county council are look-ing at areas to save money and if we want to keep this amenity we must all use it regularly. An aver-age usage survey is currently being carried out.

WASTE COLLECTION

Just to remind everybody, our bins are collected on a Tuesday.

This year you need to present household and green waste on the same day, Re-cycle will be collected on alternate weeks. Please put your bins out early.

GLASS RE-CYCLING BINS

Three small bins are sited in the car park of the village hall, each bin will take mixed glass, please remember to remove any tops before disposing of bottles.

HEDGES

Thank you for cutting back your hedges where they obstructed the roads and footways, your swift response is most appreciated.

If you have any overhanging hedgerows or trees and need some help with trimming back please let us know.

PARISH PLAN

The council feels it is time that Ludford defines the direction it wants to go in the future. With this in mind we would like a group of residents to form with us a working party to prepare a Parish Plan for Ludford. We see the project being completed within 12 months. If you are 16 to 116 and want to help shape the village’s future we are looking for you. Please contact any councillor or leave a message with the clerk.

ROAD SAFETY

We have not forgotten speeding and we share

your concerns that the road traffic seems heav-ier and faster, particularly in the early mornings and evenings. We will need volunteers to man the interactive speed sign if we can secure a date, Two people to work as a pair the entire time it is sited. If you can help, even if it is only a couple of hours please contact a councillor.

Finally our next meeting will be in the commit-tee room of the village hall on Tuesday 13

th

July 2010, then usually the 2nd Tuesday of Sep-

tember, November, January, March and May. If you have any items you wish us to discuss please contact the clerk, Mrs Joyce Gay 01507 600383 as early as possible in advance of the meeting.

THE SWEET LIFE IN

LUDFORD

John Titley is a Bee Keeper.

Since the age of 14 he has had

a passion for bees and this pas-sion has stayed with him all his

working life. He was born in 1926 just three houses down from where he lives now on the

corner of Magna Mile and Six Hills Lane. When

John left school at the age of 14 he became a ‘Bevan Boy’ and I’m sure some of you will re-

member what that meant. This was just before the 2nd World War and John was given the

choice of either going down the mines, into industry or work on the land. He went to work

for a farmer called Bill Rutter at Burgh on Bain

and it was Bill who first got John interested in bees and taught John him how to take care of

his first bee colony which he kept in an old soap box.. From then on bees became the sec-

ond love in John’s life. His first love is Nancy

who he married in 1956.

John and Nancy moved into the house where

they still live today and John, who obviously

has always had a streak of the entrepreneur in him, decided to go into the mushroom growing

business. In those days mushrooms were a bit of a rarity and he considered there was a post-

war market for them. He inherited some land from his father which was originally part of the

old RAF Ludford site on which there were some

large Nissan-type huts. Along with his brother and the indominatable Nancy, they set up what

was to prove a very successful mushroom growing and distribution business.

John has kept diaries and note books on his

business and tells me that in his first year of serious production they produced and sold 100

lbs of mushrooms and by the time they took

the decision to retire in the early 1980’s they were producing 3000 lbs a week which is

150,000 lbs of mushrooms per year. They worked 24/7 on their business as well as bring-

ing up two daughters. And, of course, John never lost his love for bees. He maintains that

it was the bees that kept him sane!

Never one to hang up his boots, once he had

retired, John was able to indulge his passion for bees further. After about 3 years he had 150

colonies on about 6 sites in and around Ludford. Bees will forage up to 3 miles from their home

hive so the different colonies have to be kept a

reasonable distance apart.

Dear reader, you will probably be aware that the

Varroa mite has decimated the honey bee popu-lation across the world and a great deal of re-

sources and funding is going into trying to miti-

gate the damage that has been done by this mite. There is a resurgence of interest in keep-

ing bees and John is a mine of information on the intricacies of life in a hive with the Queen,

Drones and Workers and how they live as well

as the impact of the Varroa mite and the conse-quences for agriculture in general if we are not

able to eradicate it.

So, over the last 30 years or so John has built up yet another successful business for himself pro-

ducing and marketing his honey which he dis-tributes mainly in the North Lincolnshire area.

Although he has scaled back his activities some-what he still goes to Grimsby with his honey

which is on sale at Pennells Garden Centre at

Cleethorpes as well as other specialist outlets.

If you would like to find out more about keeping

bees or indeed if you would like to help John

with his hives he would be very pleased to hear from you.

You can contact the editor at magnamessen-

[email protected] or call Linda on 313663 and I will put you in touch with John and Nancy.

There is also a thriving BeeKeepers Society at Market Rasen. For further information please
