Fossil fuels are becoming ever morescarce, energy prices are increasing andconsumers are having to dig ever deeperinto their pockets. Taking account of theassociated price increases, it may even bea question of existence for some fleet oper-ators – and despite best efforts, it remainsin doubt whether the fight against resourceshortages can be won with rapeseed oil.For example, given an average heavy goodsvehicle consumption rate of 80 litres per100 kilometres, a rape field the size of afootball field would be needed for the jour-ney from Linz to Munich – which wouldhardly be practical due to the limited arable

land available, especially not during theEuropean Football Championship. Butmuch is being done in the search for newsources of fuel, and it is safe to assumethat more practicable solutions will befound both in the development of enginesand in the search for better alternatives tofossil fuels than rapeseed biodiesel. AEurope-wide reduction in taxes on oil wouldhelp to compensate for the high costs andwould send a positive message to worriedEU citizens. But consumers, too, have to dotheir homework, and so we feel responsiblefor ensuring careful use of naturalresources, not only because of economicinterests. By using the very latest technolo-gies, we try to ensure that fuel consump-

tion is kept to the absolute minimum possi-ble. In the same spirit, the thoughtless useof motor vehicles must become a thing ofthe past; but even something like ensuringthe correct gear and engine speed can savea significant amount when added together.Let us make the best of things, and alwaysbear in mind: where energy is consumed,there is the potential to save some.

The steel structure for the fifth hot gal-vanising plant for VA Stahl rises morethan 70 metres into the air. In order tocome to terms with the working heights,numerous 40-metre articulated tele-scopic platforms and a truck-mountedplatform of more than 60 metres werebrought onto the site. The 16-tonne steelparts were raised by crane systems,some of them quite complicated. It isexpected that most of the lifting workwill me completed by the end of theyear.

NEWS IN BRIEF: LIFTING TECHNOLOGY Crawler cranes with load capacities of up to 600 tonnes are currently being prepared for use in Johannesburg. They will be put to use at the construction site of the world's largest stadium, making a substantial contribution tothe football World Cup 2010 in South Africa. DEMOLITION The demolition of a motorwaybridge in April became a race against time. The stretch of motorway near Vorchdorf inUpper Austria was closed for 24 hours. During this time the bridge had to be blasted, broken up and transported away. TRANSPORT In mid-April, employees of the Bucharestbranch formed several three-vehicle convoys to take eleven beer tanks from the Romanianport of Braila to Ploiesti, 100 kilometres to the north of Bucharest. The foundations at thebrewery were also laid by Felbermayr SPECIAL CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Slopereinforcements along a stretch of several hundred metres were installed at the St. Pöltenstation in Lower Austria. They consisted mainly of placing infill for bored piles and soil nailwalls. The works are expected to be completed by the autumn.

CONSTRUCTIONOFFICE BUILDING CONSTRUCTED USING FRAMECONSTRUCTION

An office building of more than 1,000 m² was constructed by the FelbermayrConstruction department for the Liebherr works in Bischofshofen.

The scope of the commission for the frame construction building ranged from installingthe floor slab, various formwork tasks for in-situ concrete columns and floor units, toassembly of the facade elements. The concrete structure for the three-storey officebuilding was completed in May. A total of 600 cubic metres of concrete was used.

At the end of May, employees of theInstallation department, at the Lanzendorfbranch, were involved in placing three rein-forced concrete loadbearing elements for abridge, on their foundations. What made thisspecial was that the heavy elements, weigh-ing up to 220 tonnes, were "floated" on aircushions to their designated positions. Six aircushions were used to give the required lift,supplied by a compressor with 16,000 litres ofair per minute. Two mobile cranes were usedto secure the concrete components and pre-vent them from drifting sideways. The sitewas a motorway construction project inWiener Neudorf to the east of Vienna.

WIDE-RANGINGMaintenance work on the Danube

Works by Felbermayr hydraulic engi-neering are currently underwaybetween Passau and Hainburg. Themaintenance measures being carriedout along this stretch for Viadonau (the Austrian waterways body) includedredging and the lopping of trees over-hanging the shipping lanes. The worksalso include the 16-kilometre DanubeCanal in Vienna. Its narrow widthmeans that the dredging barge has tomake repeated return journeys to carrythe dredged materials away. TheDanube Canal works will be completedby the end of March, while the workson the Danube itself will take a littlelonger. But all the exemplary shippinglane clearance and bank reinforcingworks must be finished to optimumeffect by the summer.

BAUTRANS – AN AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN CO-PRODUCTIONBORING EQUIPMENT FOR GAS PRODUCTION

In February, up to 27 sets of BauTrans heavy load equip-ment were commissioned for the transportation of twoboring stations. They were transported over a distanceof around 800 kilometres from Koper in Slovenia toSzeged in south-east Hungary. 160 journeys, with unitweights of up to 55 tonnes, were made within 2.5weeks to carry a total of 3,315 tonnes of heavy plant toits destination. The planning and implementation of thetransport manoeuvre was carried out jointly by theFelbermayr subsidiaries BauTrans-Budapest (Hungary)and BauTrans-Lauterach (Austria). Coordination of alldelivery deadlines was ensured on site by a BauTrans

employee at the Slovenian harbour town of Koper.

HIGH TECH VERSUS LOW TECHTRANSPORTING HEAVY PLANT FROM POLAND TO BULGARIA

BIG NOISEMini-cranes are competing with the major load-carrying multinationals

Whether for building restoration work, meeting special lifting require-ments at inaccessible or restricted sites or on general building sites, mini-cranes with loadcapacities of three or four tonnes are a nimble, convenient helpers in any situation, and areequally at home indoors or out. The smallest model, with a width of just 75 centimetres, caneven fit through doors. Rubber caterpillar tracks and an optional "white chain" also makethese cranes popular for use on delicate grounds. Remote control and the option of diesel orelectric motors mean that these lifting units are also easy to manoeuvre.

The long journey of two transformers and two generators for a power station inBulgaria began at the end of last year. The departure point for the transportation of

the power station components, which was to include stretches of rail, road and water,was the Alstom plant in Wroclaw, Poland. For the road transport section from theBulgarian port of Burgas to the power station building site, about 250 kilometres away,a Felbermayr articulated beak-shaped trailer bridge with a maximum loading capacity of500 tonnes was used for the first time. The main advantage of this transportationdevice is that the load is distributed over a large number of axles and is therefore lessdamaging to the road surface. The 300-tonne generator was delivered, and the projectcompleted, in mid-April. The trimodal transportation was planned and carried out jointlyby the Felbermayr project management department and the ITB – International Low-loader Rail Transport – department.

Together with two other partners, Felbermayr runs Welser Baustoffrecycling GmbH, one of Austria's most

modern recycling plants. We take a look at this business to gain an insight into a modern building materials flow

management system that makes economic sense.

When it comes to conservingnatural resources, recycling isalways preferable to tipping,"

says Robert Lehner, managing director ofone of Austria's most modern building mate-rials recycling plants. He was the one whoplanned and established the plant, and hasnow been running it for twelve years. Back inthe 1990s, when the plant was at the plan-ning stage, the project gained a lot of atten-tion, and so it was an easy matter to attractthe construction company Gerstl and thewaste disposal company AVE to join the ini-tiator Felbermayr as partners in this pioneer-ing project. Now, around 60,000 tonnes ofmaterials per annum are brought to theWelser recycling plant to be processed intohigh-quality secondary raw materials."Around 20 percent of these are from asphaltand around 40 percent from building wasteand concrete demolition," says Lehner.

Materials flow management

The building waste materials are inspectedand classified according to the degree ofcontamination. The materials are thenroughly presorted and divided into task cat-egories. They then enter the system and arepassed from the preliminary separationscreen to the manual scanning station.Here, the tangible and visible impurities

such as wood, plastics etc. are separatedout. In the adjoining impact crusher, theheart of the plant, the materials are brokendown, the reinforcing steel separated fromthe building rubble and finally the variousgrain sizes screened out. A threefold air clas-sification separates the remaining impuritiesfrom the granules for recycling and is there-fore very important for ensuring purity andquality.

100 percent quality

Only pure, thoroughly sorted secondary rawmaterials can meet the demanding require-ments of the building trade. In addition tothe modern plant, which also has systems inplace to reduce dust and noise emissions,a quality assurance system has been imple-mented in accordance with the guidelines ofthe Austrian building materials recyclingassociation. "Because of our EC certificationand regular inspections by the Upper Austriaregional authority, the materials we produceare exempt from the hazardous wasteclean-up payment," says Lehner, explainingthe background.

The results

There are many areas of application for thequality recycled materials, ranging from

asphalt and concrete granulates, used asa frost blanket layer, to top layer material forroad construction. Recycled sand is used forbedding in gas, water and power lines.Recycled chippings are used in the laying ofsewers and pure brick chippings for roof gar-dens.

River restoration – rebuildingthe banks in HainburgWell-intentioned works towards the end of the 19th century crucially changed the Danube and among other

things upset the ecological balance of the water meadows around the river. Working for Viadonau, the Austrian

waterways body, the company Donauconsult has drawn up a pilot project for restoration of the Danube water

meadows near Hainburg. The structural measures were undertaken by Felbermayr's civil engineering depart-

ment.

From November to March, two excavatorsmoved around 42,000 cubic metres ofmaterial for reforming the breakwaters.

The nature conservation experi-ment near Bad Deutsch Altenburgcomprises a section of river of

about two kilometres." Site manager HansWolfsteiner of Felbermayr civil engineeringin Wels describes the extent of the build-ing works to the east of Vienna. Along thissection, in 1890, the river banks were cladwith well-intentioned ambition with hugestones forming breakwaters.

The ecological benefits of the newbreakwater design

In the course of the river bank restorationsan attempt is being made to restore the nat-ural river course, allowing the maximumpossible self-dynamic development of theDanube in this area. In addition to removing

the breakwaters formed from tipped stone,the redesign of the breakwaters has a keyfunction in these restoration measures.Previously, eight breakwaters extended outalong a section of river of less than two kilo-metres, giving very intensive control of theriver flow. Following the much-observednature conservation experiments, all eightbreakwaters have now been removed andfour of them rebuilt to a design which opti-mises the flow of water. "The new breakwa-ters are flat and will be submerged evenwhen the water levels are low," explains thesite manager, Wolfsteiner. Around 42,000cubic metres of material will be moved inthe redesigning of the breakwaters. Theexcavations will be environmentally friendly,using buckets that can only hold stones ofthe appropriate size.

Nature and shipping lanes onceagain in harmony

The natural habitats created once againoffers room for young fish and specificplant and bird life. The redesigned break-waters also offer benefits to shippinglanes, says Wolfsteiner: "The breakwatersare angled to follow the direction of flow.This increases the current in the centre ofthe Danube and the navigation channelremains largely free of unwanteddeposits." The pioneering pilot project inthe Donau-Auen National Park is funded bythe Ministry for Traffic, Innovation andTechnology (BMVIT) and from theEuropean Union budget for trans-European transport networks.

CIVIL ENGINEERING

Between Vienna and the Morava tribu-tary, the Danube flows right through theDonau-Auen National Park. Strict natureconservation regulations apply hereand, from an ecological point of view,river bank reinforcements and flow reg-ulation structures should be removedwhere at all possible. The Danube andits tributaries within the National Parkshould be left to develop as freely aspossible. On the other hand, the Danubeis an international waterway, and thereare certain shipping standards (naviga-ble channel depth and width), whichcannot be achieved without hydraulicengineering measures. There are alsogood reasons from the traffic policy andeconomic points of view to promoteshipping. Since the fall of the IronCurtain, traffic volumes have risensharply, and at least some of thisincrease should be transferred to ship-ping. This is a recognised aim on aEuropean level and is supported by EUfunding (TEN-T, Trans-European TrafficNetworks). This section of the Danube istherefore a scene of the conflictinginterests of completely different groups.Hydraulic engineering projects can onlybe successful if a win-win situationbetween the ecology (National Park)and shipping can be achieved.

This is the background to the Witzelsdorfpilot project. Bank reinforcements arelargely being removed, so that the banks

can once again develop naturally, with flatgravel banks and steep walls forming in thealluvial clay. Regulatory structures (break-waters), which were formed a fewdecades ago by tipping large stones intothe water, are now being reduced in num-ber and height (partial excavation). Theyare being redesigned in their outline(aligned in declination) so that their detri-mental effect on the river ecology is min-imised. But at the same time, the nauticalrequirements, in particular the navigablechannel depths at low water, are satisfied.From a hydraulic engineering point of viewthe task is one of optimisation, takingaccount not only of the nautical targets,but also the ecological ones.

The client and project owner is ViaDonau – Österreichische Wasser-straßen Gesellschaft m.b.H., which inturn is implementing this project for theMinistry for Traffic Innovation andTechnology (BMVIT). The planning, con-struction supervision and ecologicalsupervision is being undertaken by theinterdisciplinary planning associationID.at, which consists of technical plan-ners (Donau-Consult Zottl and ErberZiviltechniker GmbH.), spatial planners(Austrian Institute for Spatial Planning)and ecologists (the ReckendorferTechnical Practice; AVL – the vegetationecology and landscape planning jointventure; the Zauner technical practice).

In less than 20 minutes, the crawler crane complet-ed the transportation of the 134-tonne sluice gate –around 100 metres from the storage site to the pointof assembly. The hanging and assembly of the"gates" was complicated and, despite optimumcooperation between the professionals of the com-panies Künz and Felbermayr, took several hours.

The power station, originallyplanned back in the 1940s andcompleted in 1959, was once a

symbol of the reconstruction of Austria.And to this day it is still one of the mostsignificant power stations in the coun-try, thanks to modernisation measuresin the meantime. Age has meant thattwo sluice gates have now becomeready for renewal. As well as the high-quality steel construction itself, the verylatest lifting technology and comprehen-sive installation knowledge was essen-tial.

134-tonne load moved on a hook

"The actual lifting work for the installa-tion of the two new sluice gates wascompleted within two days," saysGottfried Hrast of Felbermayr LiftingTechnology in Linz. But the job includedthe removal of the old sluice gates andthe comprehensive planning, whichtook more than six months until theplant was ready for commissioning.

"Last October we removed the oldgates, and shortly thereafter the twonew gates were delivered, each in fourparts," says Hrast of the details. Theindividual parts, weighing as much as 58 tonnes, were finished in the drainedsluice area. At the beginning of March,the great finale began with the installa-tion of the second sluice gate. Thecrawler crane fitted with an LTM 1200in individual modules, lowered around20 metres, assembled there and pre-pared for the lifting job. After lifting the134-tonne sluice gate, the journeybegan to the place of installation at thesluice entry. "We had to move carefully,so that the load did not begin to swing,"says Hrast on the apparent snail's paceof around two kilometres per hour. Thecrane driver was directed by Hrastthroughout the journey. "I'd trust Godiblindfolded," he said. And that is a goodthing, as the gate, around 250 squaremetres in size, blocked any view hemight have had of the site during themoving and lifting operation.

New "gates" for the Austria's old-est power station on the Danube

Gottfried Hrast, alias "Godi", has beenwith Felbermayr for over ten years.

Gottfried Hrast has managed severalhundred operations throughout Europe.His considerable achievements includehis involvement in the construction ofthe Olympic Stadium in Athens in 2004."Godi is technically knowledgeable, hasan excellent talent for improvisation andcan also drive a crane himself," sayscrane department head Peter Linimayrof their outstanding employee, whorecently celebrated his 60th birthday.

This was the fourth successivemajor project we have carried outfor Siemens Energy," says Boris

Albl proudly. In his opinion, a decisive fac-tor underlying the trust shown is the excel-lent transport solutions and the numerouspossibilities that Felbermayr can offer fromits own resources. "For the Irsching powerstation, we undertook the whole servicechain for transporting the two generatorblocks, starting with collection at the portof Kelheim, to setting them on the founda-tions. The biggest challenge was the trans-portation of a total of eight heavy cargocomponents within a very short time."

Hurricane Emma shook the transport project

The components were made at theSiemens works at Mülheim, Nurembergand Berlin. Immediately on their arrivalon 1 March, they were to be transferredby crew members using a mobile craneto the transport convoy. But with windspeeds of more than 200 kilometres perhour, Hurricane Emma ruined the plansand threatened to upset the whole timeschedule. The reason for the serious-ness of the delay was mainly a railcrossing at Saal an der Donau. "You have

to apply to cross at this crossing four-teen weeks in advance," says Albl of thedilemma. But fortunately the stormabated two days later and there was stillhope of keeping to the time schedule."Our head of operations for the cranework, Klaus Ruhland, together with histeam, succeeded in bringing about thetransport of the transformer, gas turbineand generator, scheduled to take threedays, in just one day," says Albl, praisingthe way that all employees involvedsaved the day with their dedication tothe job.

From March to May, Felbermayr transported three transformers, generators and turbines from the port of Kelheim to

the Upper Bavarian power station of Irsching. The main components, with unit weights of up to 371 tonnes, were

moved in convoys, each comprising three vehicles. In charge of the operation was the Felbermayr Nuremberg branch,

together with employees from the Hilden site near Düsseldorf. There was also support from Wels.

TRANSPORT

With an uphill gradient of around ten percent, the Weltenburger Berg wasone of the greatest challenges. But the team was firmly supported in thetransport of the 371-tonne generators with five tractor units and a pusher.

2,500 tonnes – a concentrationof power for power stationcomponents

Obstacles along the road

The transportation over the 65 kilometresfrom the port of Kelheim for the Irschingpower station was to take place in stagesof five days per convoy. The initial stretchthrough Kelheim itself shows why."Negotiating roundabouts in Kelheim wehad to lay 250-metre length of metal track-way to protect the road surface, kerb-stones and traffic islands from damage,"says Albl; numerous drainage culverts alsohad to be secured with steel plates. Therewere also 25 bridges to cross, involvingnumerous statics calculations and associat-ed measures for passing under and overbridges. A one-off system was even devel-oped for crossing the Abens bridge at BadGšgging. Our own "Gyro Gearloose", ErichBollenbeck from Hilden, achieved theimpossible in several "24-hour shifts",according to Albl. Together with his col-leagues at the Felbermayr Hilden branch,he designed and built a system in just six weeks that enabled bridges to be crossedby loads whose weight far exceeded themaximum permissible load of the bridge.What made the system special was thespeed with which the system could be

assembled and dismantled, leaving all for-mer solutions in the shade. But the trans-portation also faced also various obstaclesfrom above. For example, a number of tele-phone cables and numerous power lineshad to be raised.

Heading for the summit with 3,800 hp

A further obstacle was the WeltenburgerMountain, a few kilometres from Kelheim.With an uphill gradient of up to ten percentover two kilometres, it has brought heavygoods giants to their knees in the past. A further problem was the threat of land-slips, which the huge loads of the transportvehicles could have caused. Albl wanted toeliminate all risks and so everything human-ly possible was done to prevent the risk ofthe project being threatened by this ascent."A geostatic survey was undertaken andthe transport column arranged accordinglyfollowing discussions withthe vehicle manufac-turer." Thus five

tractor units and one pusher were usedsimultaneously for the very heaviest parts.This gave a total of 3,800 horsepower. Thetractor units, mainly all-wheel drive, werealso stabilised with around 35 tonnes of bal-last per vehicle. "That is to ensure the nec-essary traction," explains Albl, adding thatwhen the roads are wet it also ensures suf-ficient road holding by the tyres. In order toprevent a possible landslip from cracks inthe asphalt, the stretches of road most atrisk were fully covered with bongossi woodboards.

The grand finale

On arrival at the power station site, thehigh-tech components, each weighingmany tonnes, were transferred by 1,000-tonne lifting gear from the Goldhoferlowloaders onto the Scheuerle SPMT (Self-Propelled-Modular-Transporter) and trans-ported to their final destination. "It was impressive to see the371-tonne generator hanging 16 metresabove the foundation," enthuses Albl, clear-ly delighted with the successful outcomeof the project.

as sponsor of the Lask Linz team, and together with the longstanding team is looking forward to witnessing their come-

back. The Lask European Championship "joker" and prolific goal scorer, Ivica Vastic, tells us of his plans for the future

and for the European Championship.

Ivica Vastic's successful career to dateis clear to see. He has already won46 caps for Austria, including 13 goals

scored for the national side. He has justbeen nominated for the fourth time by tenAustrian Bundesliga coaches asFootballer of the Year, overtaking foot-balling legend Herbert Prohaska and tak-ing the record in the prestigious awardrun by the Austria Press Agency. "It's agreat honour, and carries weight, as thedecision is made by the coaches, whoknow their stuff. On the other hand, italso brings obligations for the future,which can be difficult to fulfil," says the38-year-old professional footballer. "Ofcourse the body sometimes also lets youdown, but I am still managing very well tocompensate for that by other fair means"– by which Vastic means his experience.Recently Vastic, born in Croatia, has madea substantial contribution to the reincar-nation of Lask in the Bundesliga, andenjoyed a surprisingly good season withthe team.

A future in Linz

Vastic has assured his contract with Lask forthe coming season, but he does not want tolook any further ahead. "We plan the con-tract from year to year – I am 38 and can'tguarantee that I will still be able to play atthis level in another three years, but am con-vinced that I'll be able to find the bestpossible solution with ChairmanReichel." However, a con-tinuation of his foot-balling career as acoach can beassumed, and who knows, perhaps hewill also stay on at Lask in this capacity.

Vastic in the EuropeanChampionship squad

The Lask superstar will be played by thenational eleven as their joker in the midfieldfor the European Championship. TheAustrian national side disputed their firstEuropean Championship game on 8 June in

Vienna against the team from Vastic's origi-nal homeland, Croatia. But Vastic does nothave any specific tips up his sleeve: "I hopethat we get the best out of the team and

give it our all – but the result ultimate-ly hangs on the conditions on theday and many other factors," saidVastic before the game. This like-

The Manager of the Project Management department in Wels, Peter Stöttinger, and theNuremberg branch manager of many years, Boris Albl, who has also been given respon-

sibility for the sales office in Verden, were granted power of attorney in April. With theseexpanded powers, these two employees can now react more quickly and flexibly to cus-tomer enquiries relating to transport and lifting technology. According to the company direc-tors, Horst Felbermayr and Wolfgang Schellerer, it is also intended as an expression of grat-itude for their tireless contributions over the years.

Since the beginning of this year, the Tirolean FST (Felbermayr Special Civil Engineering)branch has been under the management of Jürgen Ewerz. A master builder with a proventrack record, he is one of the first ports of call at Felbermayr in Stams, and in addition tohis technical expertise he is well-informed about all internal procedures. Changes havealso been afoot at the Hilden branch near Düsseldorf, which specialises in the trans-port and installation of heavy equipment. The branch has been managed since thebeginning of this year by Norbert Altmeyer. The former Wirzius employees has over 14 years' experience of handling heavy loads and has already frequently proven hisspecialist and social skills at Felbermayr.
