Loving God, we pray for all children

as they prepare for a new season in their lives. As they start nursery or school for the first time –

give them joy in new experiences.

As they move to new classes – give them confidence in growing friendships.

As they move to new schools –

give them strength in their growing independence. As they move on to college or university –

give them wisdom in their maturity.

And for all the teachers, assistants, helpers, carers and volunteers who teach and nurture our children and young

people, we ask for your blessing, your joy, your wisdom and your patience as they get ready for the new term!

We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Letter from Kathryn

I have always enjoyed detective fiction, from Miss Marple to

Morse and over the Summer I have been reading detective novels by Peter Robinson about DCI Banks. Some of the books have been televised. The descriptions of the

countryside and the urban landscape bring to life areas I know well. Whether it’s the beauty of Richmond and the dales or the busyness of Leeds city centre, the bleakness of

Scarborough in winter or urban landscapes of Beeston and Gipton, Peter Robinson knows how to describe God’s own county.

At the centre of a good detective story is death - a life cut

short by someone else’s actions. DCI Banks task is to explore the mystery of life and death and the relationships that surround the central character. The task is “whodunnit” but

the exploration reveals so much about the person who died and the people who were involved in that life both before and after the crime. Through the death of the victim relationships

with people and places near and far are described and analysed and the connections and links are uncovered until finally we know the truth of who dunnit!

Our faith focuses on the death of a person - the mystery is not who killed him, that is attested to in our gospels, but how he

influenced the lives of those who knew him before his death and how after his death he continues to influence so many generations of people across the globe. As we gather as

church on a Sunday morning we explore our links and connections with God, with each other and with those we don’t know. It’s a different sort of detective story and the climax is

not the discovery who dunnit but a discovery of how to live out the connections in the most loving way. We don’t always

realise the connections or understand the influence of God on our lives or of our actions on the lives of others. “No man (or woman) is an island, complete unto itself” writes the poet John

Donne. Detective stories, poetry, scripture all encourage us to reflect deeply on our relationships, with each other and with God, so that we will know the truth, the truth that ultimately

sets us free.

Thinking about Confirmation?

Both the Methodist and the Anglican Church offer confirmation for young people and adults to make a personal commitment

to following Jesus. This means taking up for oneself the promises made by Godparents at baptism. Baptism with

confirmation is also offered to any adults who, for whatever reason, were not baptised as children but now want to make a public declaration of faith in Jesus.

Bishop Nick will join George and Kathryn on Sunday 3

December for our Oakwood Confirmation service.

In preparation for confirmation, we will be offering both adult

and young people’s confirmation classes. If you are interested, please contact Kathryn or George for an informal

conversation.

Oakwood Book Group

Unlocking and Locking the Building on Saturdays

Our building is greatly appreciated by the local community

and booked out almost every Saturday for many different activities.

It would be a great support if people from church who live locally would volunteer to open and lock up on a regular but

not frequent basis. All that's necessary is orientating people into the building, kitchen toilets etc and then locking up

afterwards making sure the toilets are clean and the rooms are tidy, lights are turned off and doors are locked.

At the present time this falls on me to do almost every Saturday and a little help would be really appreciated.

Please give me a call if you could help, maybe just once a

month.

An Inconvenient Sequel "Truth to Power" ...

a Personal View August 2017

Recently the above film was given a British showing at the

Picturehouse Central in London with live links to cinemas around the country.

A pre-show interview was screened with Al Gore (who produced a film 10 years ago; and has subsequently invested

much time, energy and finance in addressing the world-wide problem of climate change) answering questions sent in on social media.

This film is the sequel. He has

filmed in locations all around the planet; from Greenland to the Philippines, Paris to Africa

showing the extreme effect of changes in weather patterns and the risks to life, limb and

livelihoods which are already being experienced and may increase: temperature rise, sea

level rise, rain bombs, floods, droughts and hurricanes. Also risks to habitats and subsequent

adjustments of fauna, flora and micro organisms.

The emphasis of the film is: we must make changes in our lifestyles immediately. Now is the tipping point. For the

sake of our children and grandchildren, consider your use of the planet and its resources. Are there changes you could make, and will you?

Although the film is a self congratulatory tribute to himself, his passion and achievements, if you have the opportunity to see

it - do (not suitable for children).

Our power base may not be as great as Al Gore's but we can certainly take advantage of what he has engaged in.

Just a few words

of appreciation to the whole church family for all the concern and caring shown to me during my recent illness.

I cannot find words to express my feelings for all the

enquiries, telephone calls, visits, cards, flowers and prayers offered on my behalf. I felt truly surrounded and supported by our church family and am convinced the Lord heard all

the prayers and gave the surgeon, doctors and nurses the knowledge and skill to perform a miracle - I am living proof

of that.

I really have been overwhelmed and I cannot find words to express my gratitude so all I can do is say a very simple but

heartfelt

GREAT THINGS HAPPEN AT

Our

Every Monday during term time from

10.30 until 12.00

The Monday Cafe is a great place to meet your friends and catch up and make new

ones. Everyone is welcome, we have homemade cakes, buttered toasted tea cakes

and, by special request, we have added delicious bacon butties.

The Monday Cafe and Martin's Market, including the sale of jams and pickles, has had its most successful year since it

started in 2014.

In addition to making donations to the church of £2,229 we have made donations to Macmillan cancer care, Methodist

Homes for the Aged, HELP (Harehills English Language Project), Leprosy Mission, Action for Children, Great

Ormond Street Hospital charity and Dementia Care totalling £608.00.

This is an incredible achievement with thanks to our loyal

band of Monday customers and the help of Sarah Cohen (head baker and cook), Hannah Laycock (head tea and

coffee maker) and Haydon Cooper (head waiter), without whose help this wouldn't happen.

We will open again on 11 September with home baking, bacon butties and toasted tea cakes. We also offer space for children to play and time for everyone to catch up with

friends.

A big thank you to everyone.

Church

Family News

Please hold in your prayers -

Joyce Kilvington as she recuperates after a fall whilst on holiday in which she suffered a head injury. We also keep Ian,

Anne and Jane in our thoughts and prayers too.

We continue to hold Gary Dearlove and relatives in mind as they come to terms with the death of David Dearlove on 9 July. David was a wonderful Christian who had been a steward

at Ashley Road Methodist Church, along with his friend. He had also been a member at Roundhay/Oakwood Church for many years and will be missed by the church family. A

celebration of David's life was held at Oakwood Church on 19 July.

Debra Cooper and Colin Simpson would like our prayers as

they recuperate and we ask the Lord's blessing on all mentioned above.

We are so pleased to see Margaret Burgess and Molly

Stallworthy back at Church and wish them the best of health.

We also hold Anne Kirkland and family in our prayers on the

death of Anne's cousin.

Congratulations to -

Doreen Smith on the birth of her great granddaughter, Alba.

Liz Gage on the birth of her daughter, Jessica.

Pam Cairns on the birth of her first granddaughter Alexa, a

daughter for Louisa and Dwight.

We eagerly look forward to seeing George, Fran, Adam,

Jemima, Esther and Lydia on their return and hearing about their time away. Our love to them all.

STRAWBERRY TEA GARDEN PARTY

A huge thank you to all who came along to help and to support our Strawberry Tea Garden Party on Sunday 16 July ... Neil set

out the tables and Sarah and Sharon did an amazing job in the kitchen, backed up by our wonderful waitresses Jennifer and Emma. Thank you too to Margaret for looking after the cake

stall, Val for running the chocolate tombola and Joyce for selling her greetings cards. Many thanks too to Anne for her picture quiz which everyone enjoyed.

Donations were made over two Sunday services totalling £159.00. The proceeds from the Garden Party were £493.05

plus £61.25 in Gift Aid. Some cakes were left which Linda kindly took to sell at her Monday Cafe (thank you) which raised another £70.00.

Total - an amazing £783.30. THANK YOU ALL!

Lynda P

The P Table

We produce all sorts of jams, jellies and chutneys from the fruit that is given to us. We add the sugar and whatever

else is needed and all the funds go to the Church.

We always need more fruit and the following are coming into season:

apples (eating and cooking), crab apples, pears, plums, greengages, damsons, quinces and sloes.

So, if you have any to spare or your friends or neighbours

have some, we can use them.

Please bring them round or phone us on 0113 2650883. We have already received rhubarb, gooseberries and mangos.

Circuit Charity Market Stall in Aid of Methodist World Missions and

Methodist Mission in Britain

Jean Hopkinson at Gipton Methodist Church held her annual market stall fundraiser for Missions from 10.00 to 15.00 on Thursday 13 July. A small group manned the stall (at the

Leeds outside market).

Jean collects items throughout the year. She sorts them and sells many of the donations prior to the market event.

The total amount raised at the market was £805.00 (£405.00

on the day plus £400.00 which Jean had already sold either to folk she knows or on Ebay).

This amazing amount has been split equally between World Mission and Mission in Britain; everything was donated (mainly

“throw away” items) which folk don’t want but obviously someone else did.

If you have anything which you think Jean would be able to

sell please let her know on 0113 2933961 or at [email protected].

She's already started collecting for next year!

Did you know one of MHA's Care Homes is in Gledhow?

Donkeys are not usually among a care home’s frequent visitors, but Gledhow is always looking for imaginative ways to

delight its residents. The home has regular visits from four-footed friends who can even make personal appearances in

residents’ rooms if required – just one of the ways in which residents enjoy richness and fulfilment in their lives.

Purpose-built in 2000, Gledhow provides nursing care for up to 50 people and goes to great lengths to fulfil all residents’

needs, both physical and spiritual. The home is well connected

to the wider community - it even has its own minibus for residents to get out and about – they have been known to use it to attend weddings or other functions.

All the private bedrooms are single and en suite, with several

communal lounges and dining rooms for company and socialising and the surrounding gardens are graced by a water feature. A full activity programme is led by residents’

suggestions and wishes, while MHA’s highly trained and caring staff members work hard to ensure the right balance of privacy and company for each individual.

Each resident can be assured of the person-centred care that lies at the heart of MHA’s values. Alternative therapies are provided such as reflexology and music therapy, which do

much to promote personal well-being, while the Chaplain provides one-to-one support to meet individual spiritual needs. In these and countless other small ways, everyone works to

ensure that all the residents at Gledhow can live life to the full in the way that they choose.

Please look out for copies of "Heart and Soul", in The New Room, MHA's magazine which is issued three times a year.

Auction of Talents Raising Funds for

Methodist Homes for the Aged

It's the time of year again when we ask you to offer your talents.

The notice will be going up shortly for your offers and bids, so have some fun and raise some money for

Please start to think about what you can offer - maybe it is

baking, car washing, cutting hair, window washing, baby sitting, dinner, or an outing.

Maybe you have a talent not listed and would like to help us to raise money for MHA. If so, please sign up and wait for the bids to come in.

Lots of new friends and you will help to raise some money.

Thank you for your support. Martin Shipley

USED STAMPS RAISE

THOUSANDS!

We have been involved and supported Hearing Dogs for the Deaf for many years by saving used stamps which help to

raise money for their work.

Just cut around stamps (make sure you

leave a border), then bring them to Church, put them in the plastic wallet on the charity noticeboard or the noticeboard

in the back porch. I will collect them and then send them to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Every stamp helps and they add up to so much.

Enjoy recycling your stamps, knowing the impact you are

making by helping to train a hearing dog which will change a deaf person’s life.

Thank you - Martin Shipley

House Groups

Early Methodist gatherings were called 'societies'.

John Wesley encouraged different kinds of small group to develop, so that both leaders and members

of the societies could receive support and challenge in their faith.

These groups, called 'classes', met regularly, and the

idea was to be accountable to each other about how each person was living the Christian life. So, people had to be very open and willing to be changed by the

experience.

In the twentieth century, it became less common for classes to meet in this way but recently many

Methodists have been trying to reclaim the tradition.

The supportive small group has been found to be one of the most powerful ways for people to feel that they

belong, and to learn, grow and expand their opportunities for Christian conversation about the things that matter.
