ABSTRACT

Stream sampling on the island of Martha’s Vineyard and in southeasternmainland Massachusetts produced 154 species, when added to other records, 157species have been documented, including 47 new state records. Unaltered streamson Martha’s Vineyard are cold water streams with temperatures similar to streamsat higher elevations in New England. Extended seasonal larval presence of sev-eral species was noted on Martha’s Vineyard.

INTRODUCTION

To date there has been no comprehensive published treatment of themacroinvertebrate stream fauna of the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Smith (2005)treated the non-insect macroinvertebrates of Massachusetts, including the islands. The Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program created adraft checklist for the aquatic macroinvertebrates of Massachusetts (Chandler &Loose 2001), but it does not include records from Martha’s Vineyard. In 2000stream samples were taken over a two day period on Martha’s Vineyard by theMassachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (Fiorentino 2002) thatproduced 56 macroinvertebrate records, 14 of which were identified to specieslevel. The Ode News online database for the Odonata of southern New England(Nikula et al. 2006) lists 25 recent Odonata records for Dukes County (Martha’sVineyard) and 8 historical records (pre-1950). These records include pond andstream species.

Martha’s Vineyard occupies a transitional zone between northern and south-ern flora and fauna. The moderate climate has allowed some groups that cur-rently have a northern distribution to remain since the end of the most recentglaciation, while groups with a more southern distribution may have colonizedthe area more recently (Jones & Kimball 1943).

Martha’s Vineyard is located 3.5 miles from Cape Cod and is approximately100 sq.mi in size. Martha’s Vineyard, along with Nantucket marks the maximumadvance of the Laurentide ice sheet in New England (Oldale 2001). The streamfauna has been isolated from that of southeastern Massachusetts for 6,000 years,or since sea-level rise formed the Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds. The island isa combination of moraine and outwash deposits (Oldale 2001). There are severalwell developed small streams located on the morainal deposits of Martha’s Vine-yard. Their presence can be attributed to the large clay deposits underlying themorainal soils. The streams are groundwater fed with mainly sand bottoms andare less than four miles in length. Those streams which are unaltered by damsfunction as cold water streams with temperatures similar to streams found at higher

elevations in New England. Streams which have been altered by the constructionof dams to create ponds were found to be distinctly warmer. The nearest perma-nent freshwater streams in southeastern mainland Massachusetts are on Cape Codapproximately seven miles northeast, though there may be ephemeral streams ata shorter distance. The streams found in southeastern mainland Massachusettshave similar characteristics to those on Martha’s Vineyard but tend to be larger insize and warmer. Water temperature measurements throughout the season showedthat the unaltered streams sampled on Martha’s Vineyard are distinctly colderthan the unaltered streams sampled in southeastern mainland Massachusetts. Ininitiating this study it was expected that the fauna on Martha’s Vineyard would besimilar to that of southeastern mainland Massachusetts because of the similaritiesin stream characteristics, geology and land use histories. It was also expectedthat the fauna of Martha’s Vineyard would be substantially smaller than the totalfauna found throughout the rest of mainland Massachusetts, due to the limitednumber of habitat types on Martha’s Vineyard.

PROCEDURE

Seven streams were sampled from Martha’s Vineyard. Three streams occur-ring on The Trustees of Reservations properties in southeastern mainland Massa-chusetts were also sampled to provide a preliminary faunal comparison with nearbystreams having similar characteristics. Streams were selected to represent a vari-ety of habitats. Unaltered cold water streams consisted of Roaring Brook, Un-named Priester’s Pond Feeder, Paint Mill Brook, and Witch Brook. Altered warmwater streams consisted of Mill Brook and Tiasquam River. Unaltered warm wa-ter streams consisted of Red Brook and Mashpee River. Ephemeral cold waterstreams consisted of Red Brook Feeder and Menemsha Hills Creek. Streamswere sampled at 2-3 week intervals in 2007 from March 13th through October15th. An additional sample was taken in Roaring Brook on January 16th, 2008.Paint Mill Brook was sampled only on October 15th, 2007, March 17th, 2008, andApril 1st, 2008. Witch Brook was sampled only on March, 17th, 2008. Streamswere sampled using aquatic kick nets and D-frame dip nets. A kick net was usedto sample high gradient sites and consisted of disturbing a 2m≤section of streambottom upstream of the net by kicking at the stream bottom to flip rocks anddislodge debris. A dip net was used to sample low gradient sites and consisted ofa series of jabs, focusing on debris piles, aquatic macrophytes, silt deposits andundercut stream banks. Both methods were based on EPA protocol (Barbour etal. 1999). Material collected was transferred to a white enamel pan in order tocondense the sample by removing larger pieces of debris. Samples were thentransferred to a 500ml jar containing 70% ethanol. Samples were sorted in awhite enamel pan containing water. All specimens were removed and the samplewas re-checked twice for quality purposes. All specimens were stored in glassvials containing 70% ethanol along with site location and collection date.

Water sampling was done on a monthly basis. Temperature, pH, conductiv-ity and total dissolved solids data were taken with a YSI EcosenseÆ pH10 meter.Stream discharge was recorded on a monthly basis and was obtained using aver-age stream depth across a set point and flow rate. Stream bottom compositiondata was recorded once in May and was based on the Wentworth scale for particlesize (Wentworth 1922). Canopy cover data was recorded once in May and is an

estimation of the percentage of the stream that is shaded by overhanging trees/bushes.

Specimens of Insecta and Crustacea were identified using current species-level keys. Specialists were consulted for difficult groups (Don Chandler; alltaxa, John Burger; Simuliidae, both University of New Hampshire). Three spe-cies of Chironomidae that were collected by the Massachusetts Department ofEnvironmental Protection (MassDEP) during the Islands (Martha’s Vineyard) 2000Biological Assessment (Fiorentino 2002) were not collected during this projectand those records are included in the species records section of this paper. Mas-sachusetts species occurrence records were obtained from the MassachusettsNatural Heritage and Endangered Species Program (unpublished data; all spe-cies), and The Plecoptera Society of North America (Stark & Baumann 2006). Acomplete set of specimens is stored at the University of New Hampshire, DurhamNew Hampshire.

RESULTS

There were 154 species recorded during this project, with 137 species re-corded from Martha’s Vineyard. Three additional Chironomidae records fromthe 2000 Massachusetts DEP sampling are included, bringing the number of spe-cies on Martha’s Vineyard to140 and the total fauna of Martha’s Vineyard andsoutheastern Massachusetts to 157. All other previously recorded insects andcrustaceans found by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protec-tion on Martha’s Vineyard were also collected during this study, so the Massa-chusetts Department of Environmental Protection records for these species arenot included in the results. There were 70 species recorded from southeasternmainland Massachusetts. Of the 157 species, 47 are new state records. Thirty-five of these new records represent specimens collected solely on Martha’s Vine-yard. Six of these new records represent specimens collected solely in southeast-ern mainland Massachusetts. Six of these new records were recorded from bothMartha’s Vineyard and southeastern mainland Massachusetts. The large numberof new state records from a relatively small sampling area can be attributed to alack of intensive sampling throughout the rest of Massachusetts. Many of thenew records are species that are widely spread throughout New England, andmore extensive sampling throughout Massachusetts would likely produce similarrecords. The large difference in number of species collected on Martha’s Vine-yard compared to southeastern mainland Massachusetts can be attributed to thedifference in the number of sampling locations (7:3), as well as the presence ofcold water streams on Martha’s Vineyard.

This study produced a significant range expansion for Tetragoneuria spinosa.Collected from Mill Brook, T. spinosa is typically a southern coastal species, with the nearest records coming from New Jersey (Needham et al. 2000). Anaxlongipes was also found in Mill Brook, and is listed as a “Species of SpecialConcern” by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Pro-gram. A. longipes is typically found in coastal plain ponds and grassy ponds(Nikula et al. 2003). A number of species showed an extended seasonal presencein streams on Martha’s Vineyard. Several species, including Eurylophellafuneralis, Eurylophella verisimilis, Leptophlebia nebulosa, and Leuctra ferrugineawere present in streams several months longer on Martha’s Vineyard than in south-

eastern Massachusetts. Baetis tricaudatus and Amphinemura wui are found atlower elevations early in the season, and at higher elevations throughout the sea-son. On Martha’s Vineyard they were found in an unaltered stream (RoaringBrook) in large numbers throughout the season.
