We know that people come to a retreat for differentreasons and we want to make it easy for you to createthe perfect experience. That's why we've classified oursessions this year in ways that let you nurture yourself ina variety of ways.
We've tagged sessions that are designed tofeed your mind with a brain icon. Some of
these sessions are text based; others explore modernapplications of Jewish law. But all of them aredesigned to stretch your thinking in creative andexciting ways.
Sessions designed to stir your emotions have aheart icon. These will make you laugh and cry,
ignite your soul and move your spirit. They're aboutprayer, repentance, love and loss. And we willprovide the human wisdom and compassion thathelps you to make sense of your inner world.
The practical and hands-on sessions have ahand icon. These are the how-tos of Jewish
life: making challah, seeing how a mezuzah iswritten or learning about the daily prayers. Thesesessions will provide you with skills and informationthat you can take home.

This session is for women who have never evenconsidered visiting the mikvah, as well as for those who haveused the mikvah regularly. There will be plenty of new andinteresting insights for everyone.
Session IIDefiance: The Incredible Story of Jews Who Fought Back
Presenter: Mr. Zvi BielskyLocation: Roundhill
During the darkest hours of WWII, three Russian brotherstransformed persecution and violence into an incredible tale ofaffirmation and survival. Living in the Soviet Republic ofBelarus, Zus, Tuvia and Asael Bielski fled to the woods toescape the Nazis. There, they built an elaborate village forrescued Jews. The Bielskis saved 1,250 men, women andchildren, whose offspring today number close to 20,000. This isthe largest rescue of Jews during WWII and tonight, Zus’ sonZvi will tell his father’s miraculous story of courage, faith andfearlessness, with film footage from the History Channel’sdocumentary and other sources. This is an incredible story ofJews who fought back.

If the Bible is the cornerstone of Judaism, then the Talmud is thecentral pillar soaring up from the foundations and supporting theentire spiritual edifice. In many ways, the Talmud is the mostimportant book in Jewish culture, the backbone of creativity andof national life. No other work has had a comparable influence onthe theory and practice of Jewish life, shaping spiritual contentand serving as a guide to conduct. Over the centuries, hostilenations have banned Talmudic study because it was abundantlyclear that a Jewish society that ceased to study this work had noreal hope of survival. The Shabbat eve prayers have been legendary throughout theages for their poetry and their haunting and joyful melodies. Theservice begins with L’chu n’ran’na — “Come let us sing.” Thehighlight of the Friday night prayers is the mystical hymn, L’cha
dodi, which describes how we prepare for and greet theShabbat; its refrain means, “Come, my Beloved, to meet theBride; let us welcome the Shabbat.” Written by Rabbi ShlomoHalevi Alkabetz, the acrostic of the first letter of each stanzaspells his name.
