WELCOME to everyone, especially our guests.
Your presence is important to us.
St. Paul’s is an evangelical Christian
congregation, embracing historic Christian
teaching on all doctrines, centered on Jesus
Christ. Our desire is to bring the Gospel both
to those who are searching for answers to the
meaning of life and to those who desire a
closer relationship with God. We here at St.
Paul's have chosen to align ourselves with the
teachings of the Lutheran Reformation, due
to the clarity with which these help us to see
the true meaning of God's Word.
Specifically, St. Paul's is a ministry of the
Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod, one of
America's truly biblical churches!
• Members and guests: please fill out an
attendance card and place it in the
offering plate to indicate your presence
today. For Holy Communion, please read
our confession and indicate your
agreement with our beliefs by checking
the box next to the names of those
communing.
• Those sharing our beliefs, especially from
parishes in fellowship with us, are
welcome to receive.
• If you desire Holy Communion but hold a
confession differing from that of this
congregation, please speak with a Pastor
or an Elder.
• Non-communing, baptized children are
welcome to come to the table for a
blessing.
Please note: Half the inner circle of individual
glasses in each tray contains water with one
drop of communion wine for those hesitant to
drink larger amounts of wine. Those glasses
with wine are rose in color. 2

Time to Grow Wednesday evening Bible study will begin on September 4th
.
Deadline to sign up for Adult studies is Monday, August 19th
.
It’s extremely important to sign up for the adult Bible studies by the deadline. Books and
study guides will need to be ordered. If you do not sign up by the deadline, you will not have
a book and/or study guide.
Every Christian can benefit from continued study in God’s Word. Time to Grow is our offering
of classes on Wednesday nights for the whole family. Through Bible study, the Holy Spirit works
to build up our faith as we continue to grow and understand God’s Holy Word. We have a meal
available in the Fellowship Hall starting at 5:00 pm and it’s served until 6:00 pm. The cost for
adults is $4.00, children ages 5-12 are $3.00 and children 4 and under are free. At 6:00 pm we
gather in the church for a time of devotion and singing before we are dismissed to our classes
at 6:20 pm. The children then go to their own age-appropriate classrooms. The adults have a
variety of classes they can choose from at the same time. Our evening ends at 7:20 pm. There is
a nursery available for children under 3.
We are excited to introduce a new children, youth and adult Bible study called Answers in
Genesis. It provides answers to the issues that confront today’s culture through the media,
school, friends, etc. It also provides a thorough understanding of the authority and primary
teachings of Scripture. All ages will be equipped to defend the Bible, and become conformed to
the image of Christ, as they apply God’s Word in their everyday lives.
Answers in Genesis Adult study guide $7.00 due at registration
Led by Pastor Lance O’Donnell and Vicar Steve Scharnell
The Bible is Trustworthy - We can trust all of God’s Word.
God’s Attributes - God’s attributes are displayed throughout the Bible.
Chronological/Historical Teaching - The Bible presents true history, not just “stories.”
The Bible’s Redemption - God’s plan of redemption is woven throughout Scripture.
Apologetics - We must be ready to give an answer for what we believe.
Life Application - We are to live in light of what the Bible teaches.
FYI parents: your children will be studying the same topics as you are on an age-appropriate
level. You are encouraged to discuss these lessons with them at home. There is a Family
Devotional Guide (for home devotional time) is optional cost is $5.00 due at registration.
THE NEW AND BETTER MOSES
A Study of the Holy Gospel of St. Matthew Led by Pastor Paul Borgman
Required Text: The Bible
How is Jesus the “Better Moses”? JUSTIFICATION!
Why is Jesus the “New Moses”? SANCTIFICATION!
And WHY DOES IT MATTER?
There is no cost for this study
St. Matthew’s Gospel is addressed to a Jewish audience. For that reason, we will study the
following:
Why do we conclude a Jewish audience (St. Matthew 1-4)?
the Law of Moses (Deuteronomy 5:1-21) and how seriously it applies to us as New
Testament Christians (St. Matthew 5-7),
Discipleship in the modern world (St. Matthew 10),
Parables, sometimes troubling (St. Matthew 13),
Life today in the church, the communion of saints (St. Matthew 18-19),
And the End Times (St. Matthew 24-25).
St. Matthew has something to say to us disciples of Jesus Christ in these post-modern times.
Faith – and how we live it – does matter!
Of course, all of the material in between these five major discourses is important too (especially
St. Matthew 26-28! What is St. Matthew’s understanding of the death and resurrection of our
Lord Jesus Christ?).
Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World Led by Carrie O’Donnell and Angie Scharnell
Book (with study guide included) is required $10 due at registration
An invitation for every woman who’s ever felt she isn’t godly enough, isn’t loving enough, isn’t
doing enough.
With a fresh approach to the familiar Bible story, Marys and Marthas alike can draw closer to
our Lord: deepening their devotion, strengthening their service and doing both with less stress
and greater joy.

THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
Jeremiah 23:16–29 (ESV) Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the
mouth of the LORD. They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD, ‘It shall be well with you’; and
to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’” For who among them has stood in the council of the LORD to see and to hear his
word, or who has paid attention to his word and listened? Behold, the storm of the LORD! Wrath has gone forth, a
whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he has
executed and accomplished the intents of his heart. In the latter days you will understand it clearly. “I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they
prophesied. But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they
would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds. “Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can a man hide himself in
secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD. I have
heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ How long
shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, who think to make my people forget my name by
their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal? Let the prophet who has a dream
tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the LORD. Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and
like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
Hebrews 11:17–31, 12:1–3 (ESV) By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. By faith
Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones. By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them. By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as if on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
Luke 12:49–53 (ESV) [Jesus said:] “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
