New Staff Cabin at Keewaydin

Over the years, not many newstructures have been built on Devil’sIsland, since the big constructionphase of the 1950’s and 1960’s.Necessary buildings have beenconstructed in the last 10 years;those include three cabins for theSongadeewin wigwam, a small sleepcabin to replace a platform tent atOjibway and the Trip Planningbuilding at Keewaydin. This year wewere able to construct a new staffcabin at Keewaydin thanks to agenerous donation by HobieCleminshaw. The cabin is locatedjust south of Keewaydin’s infirmary.Hobie and his wife Cynthia visitedDevil’s Island this summer for anice, long 10-day stay at Ojibwayand were able to see the completedcabin. A plaque on the wall, justinside the porch reads:

This cabin was made possible by agift from Charles H. “Hobie”

Cleminshaw K’45 in memory of hisfather and uncles who found greatpleasure in the magical beauty ofthe Canadian Wilderness and in

the traditions and challenges of theKeewaydin Experience over

Dedicated July 29, 2007

Hobie’s thoughts and memories ofTemagami and Keewaydin:

“My first visit to Temagami andDevil’s Island was in the early1930’s, when I recall sitting in agreen canoe being paddled by myfather, who died a few years later in1935. After my uncle, RussellCleminshaw, acquired two islandsfive miles south of Keewaydin inabout 1938, I spent many summerson the lake and went to Keewaydinand Ojibway often to watchMidseason activities, pick up mailand get an ice cream cone when theBelle docked at camp.

I have many vivid memories of myKeewaydin experiences as a camper

and assistant staff, starting in 1945.Some of them are: the camaraderiesdeveloped during canoe trips, thewonderful Keewaydin traditionssuch as the Four Winds Ceremony, the Peerade, the satisfaction fromcompleting a long difficult portagenon-stop and from navigatingchallenging rapids; blueberrybannock and cornbread; sleepingout and listening to loon calls andwatching northern lights, andwinning the Gunn Canoe Trophy.

I am reminded of the rich andenduring traditions and fascinatinghistory of Keewaydin when I see inthe lodge the trip plaques of myfather, Holbrook and my unclesRussell, Clarence and Charlesstarting in 1909. Other poignantreminders are my father’s trip logsfor 1913 and 1914, including a 1914Huron Lake trip with the well-known Speedy Rush as staff andFrank Green as guide. Severalentries among many evokememories of my tripping days:July 19, 1913: had a dandy lunch:

cornbread, biscuits, butter, milk, hash, cocoa, applesauce, beans – sang songswhile paddling.September 4, 1914 (the trip intocamp): we got up early and got ourflags and pennants fixed up but had towait quite awhile for Speedy, whospent the night on Devil’s Island. Gavethe KKK yell and ended one of thefinest trips yet.

When I learned about theKeewaydin Capital Campaign, Idecided to make a gift of funds fortwo Keewaydin staff cabins inmemory of my father and uncles, who found great pleasure in theirexperiences as campers and staff. The two cabins will be madeavailable to tripping staff families inorder to help attract and retainqualified tripping staff.”

Ojibway Lodge

The Ojibway lodge is currentlyundergoing a major renovation, which began in mid-September.Actually it began with the emptyingof the building on the day we

Rob Gougelet (far right) makes his third trip to Devil’s Island this past summer to greetJonathan and Katie in from their canoe trips. Jonathan was in Waubeno and Katie was at theEvans Outpost. Emily (3rd from left) was in the first three-week Kokomis section.

closed, August 25. There were acouple preparation steps involvedbefore we could even move onepiece of furniture out of the lodge. Each year, when Ojibway closesdown, all of the canoes are usuallystored in the dining room. However, we needed space to storeall of the lodge “stuff,” so most ofthe canoes had to go elsewhere.Keewaydin had nicely arrangedtheir canoes in their dining room inorder for enough space to fit about15 Ojibway canoes. That done, wethen could take on the task ofmoving every piece of furniture, every game and every toy. Seeingthe lodge vacant is quite something!(See photo) Since it was built, inabout 1909, nothing very major hasbeen done to the lodge. It was indesperate need of renovating. Thelist that follows is just some of theconstruction that will take place onthe building: the entire foundationwill be replaced with concretefootings, new shingling on the roof, the upstairs ceiling will be insulated,a new door and an insulated wallwill be installed between the tworooms upstairs, the old porch floorboards will be taken out and newfloor boards installed, the entirescreen porch on the west side willbe reframed and new screening putin, many windows will be replacedboth up and downstairs and outsidecedar shakes on certain sides of thebuilding will be replaced. To thecasual viewer, all of theconstruction will hardly benoticeable. However, for anyonewho has been downstairs whensomeone is upstairs walking around,

you will no longer experience anearthquake–like vibration of thebuilding and if you have hadraindrops hitting your face whiletrying to sleep upstairs, that will nolonger be a common occurrence. (Iapologize if either of the twosituations were part of yourincredible “Ojibway experience.”Other similar treats can beprovided!)
