Background of NEPCon’s CFM standard• Rationale:

– Comprehensiveness: wanted a standard that combines corporate and product GHG accounting and Carbon neutrality

– Ambitious and transparent product– Highly auditable

• Background standards: – PAS 2050, PAS 2060 and GHGP

• History:– January-February 2012: Internal hearing in CF

reference group– February 2012: External hearing with stakeholders,

staff and standards organisations– March 2012: First Draft to stakeholder consultation– November 2012: Second draft and new stakeholder

consultation– September 2013 Final version launched

NEPCon Carbon Footprint Management: The basic 8 steps

NEPCon Carbon Footprint Management Standard

Note that NEPCon CFM standard is open source!!

1. Quality requirements

1.1 Public Climate Policy: template available

1.2 Responsibilities and competences

1.3 Documentation: written, records

1.4 Performance monitoring: including corrective actions

2. Defining the scope of the carbon footprint2.1 Defining system boundaries: GHGs, organizational boundaries (control or share), operational boundaries (scopes), exclusions

2.2 Choosing a base year

Upstream Reporting company Downstream

Scope 3 Scope 1 Scope 3

Scope 2

Scope 3

3. Calculation of the Carbon Footprint3.1. Identifying emission sources3.2. Choosing calculation approach: Justify and document, accurate and conservative3.3. Collect emission data & choose emission factors: Primary sources preferred3.4. Allocations: Minimized as possible3.5. Assessing data quality: Complete, representative, uncertainty

Activity data (e.g. km travelled)

Emission factor (e.g. for car travel)

Quantity of tCO2e emissions

4. Carbon Footprint Management Plan4.1. Commitment to carbon emissions reduction and carbon neutrality: Target and plan4.2. Developing Reduction plan: Beyond regulations4.3. Developing Offsetting Plan : See Annex IV for credible schemes

Action plan

1.Out-of-hours system heat saving in production and offices2.Intelligent light saving system3.Biomass boiler – use of residual waste4.Fuel saving transport planning 5.Improved product packaging 6.Climate friendly puchasing policy7.Employee commuting campaign

CFM targets

15% Total reduction against base year by year XX

20% Reduction in electricity and heating by year XX

15% Reduction of material input by year XX

10% Reduction in fuel used in-house product transport

Carbon Footprint Management Plan

Definition: a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide made in order to compensate for an emission made elsewhere

Examples1.Forests: reforestation, Improved forest management, REDD+

2.Waste handling and disposal

3.Renewable energy

Carbon Offsets

53 carbon offsetsTotal 63 tCO2e

10 tCO2e reduction

5. Reporting and Public Information

NEPCon Reporting documents:

•Certification statement

•Public version of the CFM Report Template

Client reporting documents:

•Their Climate policy

•Their CFM plan

6. Claims

Three levels:

a) Measuring CO2: After calculation has been verified by NEPCon to meet the requirements of this standardb) Reducing CO2: After achieved reduction has been assessed by NEPConc) CO2 neutral: After organisation reduction and offset has been assessed by NEPCon.

NEPCon verifies via annual certification that your declarations of carbon neutrality are accurate and credible, by looking at key evidence:

Carbon Footprint Management Plan

7. Verify your Carbon Footprint Management Plan

Your company’s main activities and/or product life cycle

Your emission data and data collection methods

Your carbon footprint calculations

The implementation of your Carbon Footprint Management Plan

• Public reporting upon your carbon footprint and reduction efforts

• Carbon ranking (e.g. Carbon disclosure project)

• Carbon neutral claims

• Eco-branding

• Internal communication

8. Report & Communicate your efforts

Thanks!!
