The Lone Sailor Statue Project

• The 7-foot-tall bronze Lone Sailor, created by artist Stanley Bleifeld, is the centerpiece of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. It represents all people who ever served, are serving now, or have yet to serve in the Navy.

• The "Lone Sailor" is envisioned as a senior second class petty officer "who is fast becoming a seagoing veteran.”

• "He has done it all — fired his weapons in a dozen wars, weighed anchor from a thousand ports, tracked supplies, doused fires, repelled boarders, typed in quadruplicate, and mess-cooked, too."

• The Pacific Northwest is the third largest concentration of U.S. Naval Forces.

• Naval Base Kitsap is one of the most desirable duty stations for today’s Sailor.

• Kitsap County, Washington is a most fitting location for an inspiring memorial to those “who go down to the sea in shipswho go down to the sea in ships.”
