PURDUE'S INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS

The world is our classroom. It's also our professional environment, with many graduates, students and faculty involved in making international impacts.

Since 1960, Purdue has helped build three forestry schools and improved the furniture business in Latin America, advised on German aquatic science and forestry in Africa and Portugal, and trained several dozen students from tropical countries.

Long-term work

Two forestry schools in Brazil and the first forestry research program in the Dominican Republic grew with Purdue help. It started in 1960, when Douglas Knudson went to Brazil to help for two years with their first forestry school. He went back in 1965 for school number two. Dr. Charles Meyers followed in 1967 and James Collom continued the work from 1969-1975. Brazil now has 14 forestry schools and a booming forest industry in the southern half of the country.

The Agriculture College at Santiago, Dominican Republic took on a fuelwood research project in 1983. Dr. Knudson lived there as the advisor for nearly 4 years and returned later for three visits. Twelve other Purdue and Brazilian foresters provided short term advisory work, including Drs. Parker, McFee, Pope, Chaney, Holt, Gibson, Gillespie and others.

Dr. Anne Spacie spent a sabbatical leave in Germany, where she developed funding for a research program with her faculty friends there.

Short term work

In March, 1991, Dr. Andrew Gillespie and D. Knudson spent spring break in Guatemala, studying Mayan use of soils for agriculture and forestry. This is one example of several current international efforts.

Earlier, Professors Philip Pope, William Hoover, J.C. Callahan, and Harry Gibson advised on African forestry in the mid 1980's, for US Agency for International Development. Prof. Pope also worked with Portuguese forestry for a time. Dr. Knudson did park master planning in Brazil in 1972 and 1982; in 1988, he went to Indonesia for lectures and consulting on national park and forest management.

Dr. Carl Eckelman advises and trains Costa Rican and Mexican industrialists on design and manufacture of furniture for internal and export use. Prof. Harry Gibson, before coming to Purdue, supervised logging and land preparation in the Jari Project in Brazil for two years.

So another year has passed for the Wildlife Society and hopefully not in vain. With luck, people learned a fact or two that they had never known before. If not, at least friendships were made and bonded, and a good time was had by

IROUGH~INJ' nr AT !FOIRllESTIRY COINJClfo\VlE

After a nine hour drive, we all arrived at the Ford Forestry Center in Houghton, Michigan at 6:00 p.m. Michigan Tech was hosting the 1990 Forestry Conclave. We all ate cold sandwiches and warmed up with hot coffee before heading over to the roaring bonfire. At 4 a.m., Purdue was still throwing logs and excess furniture on the fire and having fun in the 14 inches of snow -- massive snowball fights!

After little to no sleep, we dragged ourselves out of bed to crawl over the mud and through the woods to have a lumberjack breakfast in the cafeteria. Finally, at 9:30: let the games begin I Craig Berryhill and Esther Hendrickson placed high in the Jack and Jill Buck. Rick Yarde did a great job in the match split, placing 2nd. Purdue also placed 2nd in the pulp toss. The team consisted of Craig, Chris Hickner, Jeff Hunteman, and Steve Stockton. They came out just a little dirty after they had their mud fight but they had a good time getting down and dirty! Craig got Purdue some points by winning the wood identification contest. Dr. Senft would be proud! Other events included the chain throw, tree ID, bolt throw, speed chop, log roll, and the tobacco spit.

Saturday ended with the relay contest. The first task was to chop down a 12 foot tall aspen. Steve, after having to stop to readjust his falling jeans, tackled it well. Purdue was in the lead! Then Craig and Brad Hody retrieved the log, dropped it into the bucking cradle, and jumped on top of it to steady it so that Carl Schmidt and Tom Mack could saw off two cookies. It was then up to Jim Chattin to split wood before Kelley Saylors could run the obstacle course wearing snowshoes. Purdue did great, placing second in the event!

After the relay, we all headed back to get cleaned up for the banquet. Everyone was given their awards after a big steak dinner. A dance was held following the banquet. Purdue had a good time dancing and getting to know people from other schools. They kicked everyone out early so we could "get a good night's sleep" before the long drive home Sunday. But that didn't stop Purdue. We stayed up late and continued to celebrate Conclave.

Sunday morning came all too soon. Purdue woke early and headed back to West Lafayette-- sleepy, but with a lot of new friends and even more good memories. Next year's conclave goers will have a hard time beating the fun that was had at Michigan Tech!

FORESTRY SUMMER CAMP BY: SAMANTHA HOWARD

The summer of 1990 proved to hold a lot of fun and trials for this years students. We suffered through the first week of camp with temperatures soaring into the mid-seventies to a frigid twenty-eight not more than two days later. We even managed to survive cars breaking down on our way there, colds, and yes even the Imp Lake cruise.

The first week we spent getting reacquainted with the different tools, getting real familiar with our fashion statement, the ever popular Silva Ranger, and settling into our cabins. It took awhile for us to get used to getting up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire, especially when it was so cold.

The second week got a late start since Prof. Moser could not be there for Monday classes. Some of the group went fishing and hiking that day while others made a road trip to Ashland, Wisconsin. Some even managed to spend the rest of the day catching up on their sleep.

As the days wore on we managed to get used to getting up at the horn to get breakfast and lunch. Some of us even missed Virginia's cooking after we left. The third and fourth weeks we focused on ecology and silviculture. We got to meet Rick Myers and Mickey Weeks up close and personal during those weeks. We also learned the scientific names for some indicator species. They weren't as bad as dendra names.

The fifth and final week came as a blessing to some and as a time of sad departure to others. After spending the week visiting different businesses we knew one thing for sure; we didn't have to go to the bathroom. Dr. Hoover and his kids made sure of that.

All in all, the twenty-four of us made it through with minimal injuries except for Brad's thumb and my leg. We learned a lot and had a great time. Some of us learned to rappel down the student center chimney while Chris McCartt and Brian Cunningham learned that it is possible to canoe over a class 3 waterfall, otherwise known as Burned Dam.

A hint to all who are going to camp in the future. Make sure you have good raingear; hip waders are great; plenty of bug spray, especially for the ticks, and at least 6 euchre decks.
