DIRECTOR’S NOTES For unforeseen and unfortunate reasons, I found myself staring at an empty rehearsal binder the week before rehearsals began in January. With a cast of five returning LightBox ensemble members, I knew we’d have a great show. I simply needed a LightBox show. You all know what I mean. You’ve seen enough of our productions (I hope) to know our style. I sent an email to Yokanaan Kearns, the playwright who produced Gilgamesh: The Hero-y King for us last fall, and jokingly asked if he could write a play in a week. Not expecting more than a laugh emoji response, I moved on to scouring my resources for a script that you all would love. You can imagine my surprise when I received the response, “Well, I can write you a play in two weeks. Will that work?” YES!!!! It was Eric’s idea to redirect our attention to adapt Treasure Island by Robert Louis Steven-son and I’m so grateful for it! Jim’s story is not familiar to me; though I read an abridged version of the book as child and even assisted directed a version for young actors in the past, little stuck with me. Through this experience of directing Treasure Island Bistro, Jim’s story of perseverance came alive for me as I hope it will for you. Kearns found the heart of the story in a way that is relatable to children today. My heart always bends toward sharing old stories in new ways, so I was thrilled with the concept. Jim and Jimena persevere through anxiety and fear, facing the most debilitating emotions head on. Using intelligence, humor, and courage to overcome the challenges in front of them, these young people find comfort in new friendships and the satisfying joy that comes with a feeling of accomplishment. And they have a swashbuckling, sword-swinging adventure along the way. That is my hope for all young people, face the fear and have an adventure. Life is sweeter that way.

THE CASTANGELEIGHA ARNOLD (Christa, Long Jane Silver) — After working behind the scenes as a stage manager for the last several LightBox productions, Angeleigha returns
to the stage for her sixth show. She previous-ly appeared in Bunnicula, The Reluctant Dragon, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, Aladdin’s Luck and Pinocchio. She has been in more than 30 productions and has been performing since she was 7 years old. Some of her favorite performances include Little Shop of Horrors as Audrey and A Very Potter Musical as Draco Malfoy. If Angeleigha found a buried treasure chest filled with gold, she would put it back for someone else to find because Christian, her soon-to-be husband, is all the treasure she needs.
SHELBY BAKER (Phoebe, Cap’n Flint, Easy) — Shelby returns to LightBox after appearing in The Jungle Book last spring. She started acting at Beyer High in Modesto and
later performed at Stanislaus State, Deva’s cafe, and the Gallo Center Repertory. Shelby has played Snow White in Beanie and the Bamboozling Book Machine at Stanislaus State and appeared in Tiny Tim’s Christmas Carol at the Gallo. If Shelby found a treasure chest full of gold, she would hop on a pirate ship and sail to a tropical island to drink some coconuts and swim in the sea.
RON DAILY (Nate, Billy, Capt. Smollett, Job) — This is Ron’s sixth production with LightBox Theatre. He appeared in The Reluctant Dragon, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs,
Aladdin’s Luck, Pinocchio, and Gilgamesh: The Hero-y King. Ron had previously worked with the Gallo Center and Playhouse Merced. He’s been in plays such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Once Upon a Mattress, Noises Off, Les Miserables, and The Fan-tasticks at Stanislaus State. If Ron found a buried treasure chest of gold, he would give it to his family.
THERESA RAMIREZ (Jimena, Jim) — Theresa returns for her third consecutive LightBox Theatre Company production. She made her debut last spring in The Jungle Book and
appeared in Gilgamesh: The Hero-y King last fall. Theresa graduated from Stanislaus State with a Bachelor’s degree in Music with a concentration in Choral Education. Some of her favorite roles include Cha Cha in Grease, The Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Cinderella in Cinderella, and of course Mow-gli in The Jungle Book. If she found a buried treasure chest filled with gold, she would make sure her mom could retire comfortably and use the rest on a fun trip with Teddy and Donovan!
ELIANA ROBERTS (Sam, Dr. Livesey, Merry, Ben) — Prior to making her LightBox Theatre Company debut in last spring’s The Jungle Book, Eliana performed with Turlock Youth
Performing Arts (TYPA), Playhouse Merced, Pitman High School Drama, Pitman High School Madrigals Choir, and TYPA Troupe. Some of her favorite roles include The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland and the Matchmaker in Mulan. If she found a buried treasure chest filled with gold, she would most definitely keep it! She would make sure that she and her fiancé are set financially, then she would help her mom and brother because they have done so much for her throughout the course of her life!
GABINO — Gabino is a Scarlet Macaw from the tropics of east-ern Mexico. Gabino made his LightBox debut in The Super Cilantro Girl and has made cameo appearances in various
LightBox productions. On this spare time, he likes to fly around with his cousin Javier, the messenger pigeon. He also enjoys eating PBB (peanut butter banana) sandwiches. If Gabino found a buried chest full of gold he would use the gold to save the rainforest, and buy himself a lifetime supply of Triscuits.

This English and Spanish bilingual play, originally written and performed by students at California Lutheran University, centers around Xochi from an Aztec town in Mexico. Against the advice of the villagers, Xochi travels to collect water from the Enchanted Lake, which is needed to cure a deadly plague. Along the way, Xochi encounters trouble, including Trickster gods of the Jungle, an erupting volcano and magical birds. The brave young girl also has to take on a serpent before reaching the lake. This play teaches about having courage and determination to defeat obstacles and bullies by doing the right thing.
