Welcome to Sober Charities of San

Joaquin County

The CCJC Foundation is glad to share that Sober Charities of San Joaquin County has joined our cadre of Local Fund Committees. Finding housing for those left homeless by the merciless struggle with addiction was Sober Charities initial point of focus. Joining the CCJC Foundation is an opportunity to expand the support that Sober Charities offers to San Joaquin County’s collaborative court participants. This jurisdiction hosts an adult drug court, a dependency drug court, a DUI court and a parolee re-entry court.

Local Fund Committees raise funds; review requests for funding from program participants and recommend grant award payments to the CCJC Foundation.

Hello! The seeds planted by the CCJC Foundation and its Board members continue to grow. Yuba, Mendocino, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties have active Local Fund Committees serving collaborative court participants. Through our Yuba County, CA, Friends of Drug Court Fund by Judith Guthrie We have helped participants meet their goals by providing financial support after all other community

resources have been exhausted. A father of six children ages1 month to 12 years received sorely needed

clothing provided as Christmas gifts. A mother with two sons aged 2 and 13, with funds to offset the price of

text books and to purchase gas card vouchers to get to and from college. She has now completed her AS

degree and is hoping to continue her education.

We have filled requests for participants to pay for:

Pre-paid gas cards that we purchased through a First 5* grant so that that the children could get to school on time; keep important medical appointments and attend community events the whole family could enjoy together.

Tattoo removal fees,

Co-pay for dental fees for tooth extraction so that a female participant could get new dentures,

Baby formula, diapers, and groceries

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Mendocino County Adult Drug Court will be welcoming back Mark Lundholm

to perform an evening of his no-holds-barred recovery comedy at the Ukiah High School Cafetorium on Sunday,

May 14, at 8 p.m.

….Duncan James, one of the original organizers, helps fundraise with the Friends of Drug Court to raise money for

incentives to keep those in the program involved, recognizing their needs and successes.

The planning for the Mark Lundholm fundraiser has been in the works for two years and with the money raised from

this event and other activities, offenders are aided with housing issues, educational fees, payment of utility bills and

perhaps the purchase of a bicycle, some clothing or diapers.

…..The Friends of Drug Court present Mark Lundholm in Addicted, A Comedy of Substance at the Ukiah High

School Cafetorium on Saturday, May 14 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at Ukiah Hospice at 401 South

tate Street (462 3141) and Mendocino Book Company at 102 South School Street (468-5940). For further

Host Your Own Celebration for Your Collaborative Justice Courts?

Here is what to do:

Pick an occasion

Decide on entertainment o Secure said entertainment

Get sponsors to cover the costs including o Publicity o Event Location o Entertainment o Lodging if you are bringing in someone like Mark L

Find a location

Set ticket prices (sale of tickets is where you will raise money for your fund) o Secure a couple ticket outlets to help you sell them

Develop a publicity campaign early o Posters and handbills may be donated by local print shops…ask ‘em!

Get the word out to: o Collaborative Court Team members, o Friends, o Families, o Program participants and graduates, o Local newspapers; o On the radio (Public Service Announcements are free!)

Decide how complicated you want this to be. Do you want to: o Sell bottled water or food? o Include a silent auction? o Raffle tickets?

RECOMMENDATION: KEEP IT SIMPLE!

Decide if you want to recognize people during this event and if yes, who and why o Are certificates, plaques or other items needed?

The night of the event you will need: o Programs that include all your sponsors o Ticket sellers o Ticket takers o Ushers (maybe) o An emcee with a program spelled out for him or her

Be sure to recognize all your sponsors!

Most importantly, enjoy pulling off this event. Have fun! You are doing vital good!

If there is an active Local Fund Committee serving collaborative court participants in your community, donors may contribute to your fund through the CCJC Foundation website, http://www.ccjcfoundation.org/contribute-here/. All donations are directed to the designated fund.

UPDATE EFFORT TO ADDRESS DENTAL NEEDS

Last Fall the CCJC Foundation conducted a dental needs survey with the goal of approaching dental insurance companies to request funding. These companies do have funds to give away and good solid data and personal stories are needed to secure this funding. There is very little if any current statewide data available on California’s collaborative courts. So…those communities who either responded to the survey or have a Local Fund Committee will be contacted for additional information and we will continue to work on their behalf.

The Orange County

Collaborative Courts

Foundation is a Model for Local

Fund Committees!

Stellar work is being done by the

Orange County Collaborative Courts

Foundation to support Orange County’s 19

collaborative justice courts and the

individuals making their way through

these judicially supervised treatment

programs. From securing $20,000 from

the local Assistance League to be used to

meet transportation, medical, dental,

vision, and education needs to offering

RIVERSIDE COUNTY VETERANS TREATMENT COURT PARTICIPANT

Veteran served 5 years in the U.S. with deployment in combat. This honorably discharged veteran struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. He has made progress and his treatment providers feel he would benefit from equine assisted therapy. ROLE OF “COURT TEAM LIAISON” ON A LOCAL FUND COMMITTEE

The Court Team Liaison is a representative of the Collaborative Justice Court Team(s) who reminds Team

members that funding is available to assist participants through their Local Fund Committee. This person may

have a supply of Requests for Assistance to share with other Team members for their use on behalf of

participants. The Court Team Liaison may attend meetings of the Local Fund Committee to assure open

communication between the local Collaborative Justice Courts Teams and the Committee and is not expected to

have fund raising responsibilities. In jurisdictions with multiple Collaborative Justice Courts, there may be a

Court Team Liaison for each Team.
