“We need different types of connection in our life!” Like so many others, I’ve been “out of sorts” since mid- March when COVID-19 drastically impacted many of our lives. For me, there was the emptiness I felt when I removed the flyers from our exam room bulletin boards for many of our on-going activities that were cancelled; causing an emptiness that has yet to be entirely filled. Like so many others, I am being reminded of the importance and value of the meaningful connections I make in my day-to-day life with family, friends, acquaintances and even strangers! Former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s new book, Together: The Healing Power of Human Connections in a Sometimes Lonely World” seems to have been released at a particularly opportune time. In it, Murthy examines the research on loneliness as it relates to physical and mental health as well as longevity. Jill Suttie, Psy.D. (book review editor for Greater Good) questioned Murthy “about his book and its implications, both generally and during this time of sheltering in place, where social connection is even harder to come by” and reported the exchange in an article titled “How Loneliness Hurts Us and What to Do About It.” In this article Suttie asks Murthy, “You write that we need three levels of connection – intimate (partner or spouse), relational (circle of friends) and collective (community) – to avoid loneliness. Why is community important? Murthy replies, As human beings, we evolved to need each other and to be part of a community. There’s something deeply ingrained in us about wanting to be a part of a shared identity. So, we find ourselves gravitating toward various affinity groups based on shared religious beliefs or shared race and ethnicity or shared nationality or shared interest, and we derive a lot of meaning and value from a common identity with others. the emptiness caused by the many cancelled activities... but it hasn’t been entirely fulfilling. The ST&BF Steps to Survivorship Cumulative Walk/Run and Bike Ride was another attempt to create connections through a common activity and goal with a few others. And in an effort to replace even more of that emptiness with something more fulfilling (even if not completely fulfilling) I have rather spontaneously (but very thoughtfully) put together some plans to replace those previously thwarted by COVID-19 for a “Celebration of Life” on National Cancer Survivors Day!

So, with considerable care and caution, several in-person opportunities for area cancer patients and survivors are being offered starting in June along with continued virtual opportunities. NOTE: People age 65 or older and those who are medically vulnerable should continue to limit travel and remain at home as much as possible.

Little by little, by focusing on what we CAN do (safely) and not what we CAN’T do (or shouldn’t do), fulfillment is beginning to fill the empty spaces!!!

NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS DAY: ST&BF Offers A Safe & Healing “Celebration of Life” at the Christopher Farm & Gardens! Sunday, June 7th from 1P to 4P Wednesday, June 17th from 5P to 8P Christopher Farm & Gardens, W580 Garton Rd, Sheb.

It may not be exactly HOW we originally planned to commemorate this year’s Cancer Survivors Day “Celebration of Life”! But, under the

current circumstances, I would suggest the “HOW” is not nearly as important as the “WHY”! And the “WHY?” is because we can.

First, I would like to offer an huge expression of gratitude to Mr. Jay Christopher along with Erika Lusthoff and the many wonderful folks at the Christopher Farm & Gardens whose kindness and hard work is making this possible for us to experience the therapeutic benefits of this healing property! Those of you who have visited in the past know what I am talking about... and I encourage the rest of you to consider taking advantage of this opportunity!

It will be different. Due to efforts to eliminate the threat of COVID-19, certain guidelines will need to be enforced and followed. See attached flyer for details or contact me with questions or concerns.

There won’t be the usual handshakes or hugs or the feeling of strength and solidarity that comes from a large

gathering of cancer patients/survivors and co-survivors, hand-in-hand (as captured by the above photo submitted by Mary Schueller, RN from a 2018 visit to the CF&G). But there will be smiles (even if hidden behind face masks) and handwaves and a sense of community as we connect while keeping a safe distance and strengthening a common bond through shared activities that are all very conducive to social distancing and safe practices, all taking place in this healing environment!

There will be a “Survivorship Through the Lens” Photo Taking Opportunity for this year’s “People’s Choice Photo Contest.” You can take a some photos and then submit one or two of them along with a few comments at: www.scccf.org/contests. There will also be an outdoors “Gentle Yoga for Cancer Survivors” session during which participants will be safely spaced as Stacy Harriott, CYT leads participants through an amplified sound system. Take some “Steps to Survivorship” along a Cumulative 5K, 10K, Half Marathon & Marathon Walk/Run measured course. Or, feel free to just quietly wander the wonderful property own.

I am hopeful that many of you have started on your way to FINISHING the ST&BF Cumulative 5K, 10K, Half Marathon & Marathon Walk/Run and/or the Cumulative Bike Ride! As you

continue towards your own finish line, here are some thoughts and ideas to keep in mind.

NOTE: The Cumulative Bike Ride is restricted to “Casual Participants” only - I just didn’t want to see Bob Hartig and his wife Ruth (photo right) pulled over to the side of the road for a

speeding violation!

Casual Participants: For those of you who are planning to be a “Casual Participant,” it’s quite simple. Just walk, run or ride and estimate your distance as best you can. And remember, you can complete more than one distance and you can participate in more than one category!

Friendly Competitors: Maybe you’ve NEVER walked or run (or even thought about running) a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon or Marathon. Well... here’s your chance to do so... just not all at one time. Watch for upcoming “Steps to Survivorship” Group Walk/Runs Training Sessions on measured courses (marked every 500m) and consider walking 500m or 1000m and then jogging or running 500m. Do this ten times over the next four months and add up your times and you’ve completed a 5K run! Maybe you aren’t interested in running a 13.1 mile half marathon or a 26.2 mile marathon at one time... but maybe you can jog or run about a half mile twenty one times or about a mile 26 times over the next four months and you’ll have completed your first half marathon or marathon!!!

Here's how I plan to participate: Because I haven’t been running (or “jogging” to be more accurate) much over the past six months due to the Indoor Row Group season I plan to begin as a “Casual Participant” as I complete all four distances. As I get a little more “running” fit (running and rowing use very different muscles and movement), I hope to be able to run a little faster as a “Friendly Competitor.” My goal is to complete all four distances as both a Casual Participant and a Friendly Competitor by mid-August and, at which time I plan to replace slower times with faster times resulting in an improved cumulative finish time as a “Friendly Competitor”! Although I do plan to participate in future “Steps to Survivorship” outings, most of the mileage will probably be completed alone and on my own on our “marked and measured” courses.

Measured Courses: Current maps for “measured and marked” courses are available at www.scccf.org/events (soon to include a 1.5K course that follows the perimeter of the block here at the clinic - not only for

survivors and co-survivors but for our wonderful staff of medical caregivers here at MOA/SCBS)! I plan to expand the number of “measured and marked” courses so if you have a suggested route or if you would like to learn how you can establish a measured course of your own (possibly near your home) please contact me!

We will be offering four “Steps” opportunities in June. The first on Saturday, June 6th in conjunction with our OUTDOOR Indoor Row Group Session here at MOA/SCBS, one at each of the sessions at the Christopher Farm & Gardens on June 7th and June 17th and one along the Shoreline 400 trail on Monday, June 22nd. Of course, all participants must practice social distancing and wear a mask whenever in proximity of anyone who isn’t a member of your household.

Monday, June 8th at 9:30A or Tuesday, June 9th at 6P! Sessions immediately follow VIRTUAL Local Cancer Community Updates. These “Just

for the Fun of It” projects only require some common household items, a bit of creativity and ingenuity and a willingness to just try and have fun! Follow up/demo

sessions will be Monday, June 22nd at 9:30A or Tuesday, June 23rd at 6P!

Game Gathering: TLC’s “Card Sharks” Tuesday, June 16th at 7P

Session immediately follows this month’s TLC Survivorship Session. This version of the former game show “Card Sharks” combines opportunities to share some stories

and try and guess the outcome of the cards!

• Open to cancer patients/survivors with a co-survivor guest and medical caregivers! • Advance registration by June 3rd & June 13th respectively is REQUIRED! • A final confirmation e-mail will be sent to all registered participants with details! • Admission times will be assigned and staggered! • General risk assessment and body temperature screening will be conducted! • Safe spacing & social distance practices of all participants will be enforced! • Face masks must be worn when within 6-feet of anyone outside one’s household! • There will be NO group gathering are assembly! • No food or drinks will be served! • Event is contingent upon weather conditions and other factors!

Survivorship Through the Lens!

Bring your camera and capture the beauty of the property! Submit one or two of your original photos to the 2020 ST&BF Survivorship Through the Lens People’s Choice Photo Contest themed, “Beauty from the Eye of This Beholder” at www.scccf.org/contests. The submission deadline for this event will be June 24th, after which you will be able to view the submitted photos and comments and vote for your favorites in three categories: cancer survivors, co-survivors (family & friends), medical caregivers. Participation prizes to be determined.

Gentle Yoga for Cancer Survivors!

Cancer survivors can reserve a spot for an outdoor yoga session. Participants will be safely spaced and our instructor will use a PA system for this class. The first class will start one hour after the event start time of the day. If this class fills, a second class will be offered two hours after the start time. Please bring your own mat!

Steps to Survivorship!

For those participating in the current ST&BF Steps to Survivorship Cumulative Walk/Run, there will be a 1500 m measured/marked course. “Casual Participants” are encouraged to casually walk/run it. “Friendly Competitors” can submit their distance(s) and time(s) from this “measured course”!

Steps to Survivorship FINISH the ST&BF Cumulative

5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon Walk/Run and/or

Cumulative Bike Ride! What is a Cumulative Walk/Run? No need to walk/run the entire distance at one time! Complete shorter segments as you work to complete a 5K (3.1 mi), 10K (6.2 mi), Half Marathon (13.1 mi) and/or Marathon (26.2 mi)! What is a Cumulative Bike Ride? Total your rides to complete one or more century(s) (100 miles) and/or metric century(s) (100 kilometers)! Participation Dates: Monday, May 11th through Friday, September 25th. Eligible Participants: Area cancer patients/survivors, co-survivors & professional caregivers. “Casual Participation” Category is non-competitive (no times required). Just complete and record your distance on the ENTRY/LOG and submit. “Friendly Competition” Category is for Walk/Run only (Bike Rides are limited to Casual Participation) and requires recording and reporting of time(s) on measured courses with the option of improving on finishing time by submitting faster splits upon completion of the full distance (contact Tim for details). Maps of measured courses available at www.scccf.org/events. Cancer Patient/Survivor Divisions: Treatment - currently in treatment or post-treatment. Years since diagnosis - Less than 1 year, 1 to 5 years, 5 to 10 years, 11 to 25 years, more than 25 years. Guest Co-Survivors: Co-survivors must be the guest of a participating cancer patient/survivor. Medical Oncology Caregivers: Local oncology doctors, nurses and support staff.
