Fall, 2015

Federal Election – October 19th

This election there is a better choice for the economy and the future.

Are you happy with the status quo? Our country’s slow economic recovery has left 2.8 million Canadians

unemployed or underemployed. Nearly three quarters of the jobs created in the past six years have been precarious

(part-time, temporary or in the self-employed sector). With limited job prospects, household debt is at an all-time

high. This election, we can choose how we overcome these challenges.

We believe there is a better choice. One that gets us ready to support and care for our aging population. One that

gives Canadians high-quality, secure jobs instead of short-term, temporary positions. One that provides programs

that benefit everyone—instead of tax relief programs that benefit a select few. This election, what will you choose?

Members and their families were treated to carnival games and food, a balloon clown,

face painting and lots of great prizes. It was a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed

by everyone that participated. Thanks to the recreation committee and all the

members who attended.

When you meet the women of Unifor , you realize how powerful and diverse our union

is. Whether it’s the lone woman mechanic in the BMW plant, the 2 of 7 women in a

workforce of 800 men in a mine from Sudbury or the health care workers that take care

of our families, you can’t help but feel inspired.

Local 6004 sent four women from our Women’s committee to the annual Unifor

Women’s Conference in Port Elgin that took place in August 2015. As you can imagine,

the main topic of conversation was the upcoming Federal Election and the importance

for our sisters to get out and vote. With 17,147,459 women in Canada, we have the

power to change the history of this country on October 19th!

Various workshops were held over the course of 3 days on such topics as Health Care,

Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights, Retirement Security and Violence Against

Women .

The Local 6004 Women’s Committee has also created a partnership with the Sexual

Assault Centre of Ottawa to offer continual support for ongoing projects throughout the

year.

By law, everyone who is eligible to vote must have three consecutive hours to cast

their vote on election day. If your hours of work do not allow for three

consecutive hours to vote, your employer must give you time off. For example, if

you live in a riding where voting hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and you usually

work from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., your hours of work will not allow three

consecutive hours for voting. To give you three consecutive hours to vote, your

employer could allow you to arrive late (at 12:30 p.m.), let you leave early (at 6:30

p.m.), or give you three hours off at some point during the work day. Your

employer has the right to decide when the time off will be given.

Employers cannot impose a penalty or deduct pay from an employee who is taking time off

to vote if required by the Canada Elections Act. An employee must be paid what he or she

would have earned during the time allowed off for voting.

There are four advance voting days. Polls are open from noon to 8:00 p.m.
