According to the experts this involves:beginning each day with a review,
presenting new material in small steps with review, asking lots of questions and providing models,
more practice and checking for student understanding, having a high success rate and scaffolds for hard stuff,
requiring and monitoring independent practice,And finally…….engaging kids in monthly review.
Wow……..
Now….what does that REALLY mean?????????
We need to find methods andactivities that truly engage ourstudents without being “fluff,” which provide ways to apply the skills to a practical situation andalso utilize workplace skills neededfor the future. Students need activities that mimic real life ……If they can’t see the worth in anactivity, they tend to dismiss theactivity.
So, what are some tools we can incorporate to engage our students and yet meet all the mandates
Of the TESTING GODSAnd the REAL WORLD
(where the jobs are…….)
Here’s the FUN STUFF !!!!!!!
Wanna teach science vocabulary???????• http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/7079?style=print• http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/7079?ref=search
How about……..bingo for vocabulary??????• free bingo game site to create vocabulary bingo: https://bingobaker.com/
• Great site for vocabulary and GAMES!!!!!!• cram.com http://www.cram.com/

LET’S SING !!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best ways to engage students is with singing. They may not be able to remember a list of plant parts but………
they can remember every lyric in a song that sounds likeSPITTING to adults!
So………………………………..Use science songs to learn concepts and vocabulary!!!

One of the best resources for the classroom is this set of formative assessments. They are a bit pricy but a
school could purchase a set.
Kids LOVE Reader’s Theater……There are several sources for
science based plays.

Want to add a little code savvy and movement to the classroom???? Add QR Codes!
There are a number of create-your-own-QR Code sites. This is my personal favorite because it is user friendly.

Ya Gotta Make It Fun
Engaging students also meansmaking it fun and letting them TOUCH.Yes, I know it is hard to get the$$$$$$$$$ to purchase items. But….troll the internet for grants.Enter science contests like ScienceWorx and Flinn. Explore opportunitiesfor a fund raiser or ask for discardtype items. It can be done. They NEED TO TOUCH SCIENCE.

My last……sigh….techi tool…..There is a cool presentation site called Thinglink.
Like Prezi, it allows students to make interesting presentations that contain links. You click on the button to see the link………
