hello! good to meet you!
kia ora I’m the Little Green Kiwi - here to help you on your travels in NZ!
welcome to my home - beautiful Aotearoa New Zealand...
New Zealand - Aotearoa “land of the long white cloud” continues to draw visitors for it’s clean green unspoiled countryside.
For such a small country it has well and truly earned it’s place in the international arena. The fashion industry has over 50 established labels attracting the great fashion houses from around the world.
This is a country which has “grown up” in the last decade offering a sophistocated authenticity which is unrivalled. Agriculture
continues to be the main export and New Zealand also enjoys a thriving wine industry - now one of our most valuable exports.
The local film industry has set New Zealand firmly on the world stage with movies such as the Lord of the Rings, Whale Rider and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe achieving international acclaim.
Sport is closely linked to the country’s identity - the All Blacks have the best win to loss record of any national team!

GEOGRAPHYNew Zealand is situated in the South Pacific Ocean, between latitude 34’S and 47’S. The country runs roughly north-south with mountain ranges down much of its length. Its two main islands (North and South) cover 266,200 sq km (103,735 sq miles), about the size of Japan or California and slightly larger than Great Britain.
In a couple of days drive it is possible to see everything from mountain ranges to sandy beaches, lush rainforests, boiling mud, glaciers, fiords and active volcanoes.
Quarter of the country still remains forested - mostly in high country areas. Most of these remaining areas are protected from exploitation in national and forest parks, where they can be enjoyed by all.
The giant kauri, among the largest trees in the world, is now restricted to relatively small forest pockets in Northland and on the Coromandel Peninsula.
New Zealand is a land of unique birds. The best known is the flightless kiwi, New Zealand’s

unofficial national symbol. Also flightless are the weka and the endangered kakapo, the world’s largest parrot.
Another unique bird, one capable of flight, is the inquisitive kea (native alpine parrot), which is renowned for its fearlessness of humans and cheeky personality. New Zealand has 14 national parks, three maritime parks, two world heritage areas, hundreds of nature reserves and ecological areas, a network of marine reserves and wetlands, and protection for special rivers
and lakes. In total, around 30 percent of New Zealand’s land area is protected conservation land.
NZ PEOPLE AND HISTORYPopulationNew Zealand is an independent country and a member of the British Commonwealth. It has a diverse multi-cultural population of 4.3 million people. New Zealand’s indigenous Maori make up around 14 percent of the population.

first settlers. They made an epic journey from the legendary Hawaiki, probably in Polynesia to the north of New Zealand, about 1000 years ago. The great explorer Kupe, who legend says first discovered New Zealand, named the new land Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud.
The first documented European to discover New Zealand was Dutch navigator Abel Tasman, who came here in 1642 in search of the fabled great southern continent. Over 125 years later, Captain James Cook claimed it for Britain in
1769 and produced a map of the country.
The Treaty of WaitangiSeen as New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty established the country as a nation. It was signed in 1840 between leading Maori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown at Waitangi. Now one of the country’s most historic sites. The signing of the treaty began on 6 February, which has become New Zealand’s national day, known as ‘Waitangi Day’.

Eco-friendlinessWe are fortunate to be able to enjoy all the incredible beauty and stunning natural landscapes around New Zealand. The environment truly is something we need to treasure. Here are some great tips to help you become a more conscientious, eco-friendly traveller... • Stay on the track
If you’re out in the bush hiking or walking, stick to the track to help preserve the surrounding flora and fauna.
• Environmentally friendly products Check bottles for the recycle logo. Use biodegradable soaps - it’s much more gentle on the local water systems.
• Recycle Ask the local i-SITE for the nearest recycling station for paper, glass, plastic and cans.
• Water conservation This is such a valuable resource that we can’t take for granted. Take shorter showers and be concientious with your water usage.
• Buy local products These make the best honest-to- goodness-kiwi gifts and support local industry.
• Explore your transport options Hire a bike, take a group tour or just take to the streets with a good pair of walking shoes. You’ll rub shoulders with a lot more Kiwi’s this way too!
• Choose accommodation wisely There is a lot of choice for where to stay, you may as well support places you know are doing their best to take care of the environment.
• Get involved in a local project Lessen your impact as a tourist by giving something back to the land. Check out www.doc.govt.nz for some conservation volunteer options.

Abel Tasman National Park This park is renowned for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and world-famous Abel Tasman Coast Track. At 22,530 hectares Abel Tasman is New Zealand’s smallest national park. It has a mild climate and is a good place to visit at any time of the year.
Location: At the top of the South Island; the nearest towns are Motueka, Takaka and Kaiteriteri.
Aoraki/Mount Cook (70,696 hectares) This is New Zealand’s great alpine park. It has the highest mountains and
the largest glaciers. Aoraki/Mount Cook Village and all visitors to the park are dwarfed by the immensity of the landscape that surrounds them.
Aoraki/Mount Cook was formally established as a national park in 1953 from reserves that were established as early as 1887 to protect the area’s significant vegetation and landscape.
Location: Central South Island, deep in the heart of the Southern Alps. Aoraki/Mount Cook village lies within the park and Twizel is the nearest town.

The “top of the south” has many breathtakingly beautiful places to explore both on land & sea. Mountain peaks, vast high country expanses, tranquil bays, lush forests & rich marine life can all be experienced here. Arthur’s Pass National Park Sits in the heart of the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. Its high mountains with large scree slopes, steep gorges and wide braided rivers, straddles the main divide – the ‘back bone’ of the South Island – between Canterbury and the West Coast.
This is a park of contrasts, with dry beech/tawhai forest in the east, luxuriant rainforest on western slopes, and a historic highway and railway running through the middle. Established in 1929, Arthur’s Pass is New Zealand’s third national park.
Location: Situated between Canterbury and the West Coast in the South Island.
Egmont National Park (33,534 hectares) Here the volcano Taranaki (or Mt Egmont as it is also known) rules supreme standing tall above the surrounding landscape. Beside it are two volcanoes of an earlier era: Kaitake and Pouakai.
In good weather it is a challenging climb for the fit and well prepared. For those wanting a more relaxing experience there are beautiful walks through verdant forest to

Location: On the western coast of the North Island. The nearest towns are New Plymouth, Inglewood, Stratford and Opunake.
Fiordland National Park (established in 1952) is a vast, remote wilderness and the heart of Te Wāhipounamu - South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
Southwest New Zealand is one
of the great wilderness areas of the Southern Hemisphere. It is an area where snow-capped mountains, rivers of ice, deep lakes, unbroken forests and tussock grasslands produce a landscape of exceptional beauty.
Location: In the far southwestern corner of the South Island, with much of the region inaccessible by road. The township of Te Anau is considered the gateway to the park.
Kahurangi National Park Created in 1996, Kahurangi is one of New Zealand’s newest and at 452,002 hectares the

second largest national park. Translated its name has a number of meanings including ‘’treasured possession’, an apt description of its wonderfully diverse natural and recreational values. In places it is an untracked wilderness, elsewhere a wonderful network of tracks lets you explore wild rivers, high plateaux and alpine herbfields, and coastal forests.
Location: In the northwest corner of the South Island. Motueka, Takaka, Karamea, Tapawera and Murchison are the park’s gateway towns.
Mount Aspiring National Park (established in 1964) This is a wonderful mixture of remote wilderness, high mountains and beautiful river valleys. It is a walker’s paradise and a must for mountaineers. The views are endless and unforgettable. The park is part of Te Wahipounamu - Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.
Location: Southern end of the Southern Alps. The closest towns are Wanaka, Queenstown, Glenorchy and Te Anau.

northern most Southern Alps. The park offers tranquil beech forest, craggy mountains, clear streams and lakes both big and small.
Location: In the north of the South Island. The gateway to the park is St Arnaud, a 1-2 hour drive from Nelson or Blenheim.
Paparoa National Park i Luxuriant coastal forest, limestone cliffs and canyons, caves and underground streams, and an absolutely spectacular coastline, are all packed into one national park.
Established in 1987, this park
is perhaps most famous for the Pancake Rocks and the blowholes of Dolomite Point, near the little settlement of Punakaiki.
Location: In the northern part of the South Island’s West Coast, alongside State Highway 6, between the towns of Westport and Greymouth.
Rakiura National Park The 14th of New Zealand’s national parks, Rakiura opened in 2002. With 157,000 hectares, the park makes up about 85 percent of Stewart Island.
It encompasses a network of

former nature reserves, scenic reserves, and state forest areas. Although the island lies only 30 kilometres south west of Bluff, between latitudes 46 and 47 degrees south, it could well be in another part of the world.
The sunrises and sunsets in soft southern light are amazing. Visitors can explore pristine beaches, sheltered inlets, and coastal forest, and see seals, penguins, kiwi, weka and many other birds. There are also opportunities for hunting, fishing, boating, cruises and scenic flights.
Location: On New Zealand’s
Stewart Island/Rakiura.
Te Urewera National Park Remote, rugged, immense. Established in 1954, this park is famous for its lakes and forested beauty as well as its stormy history. In the southern part of the park lie two of the park’s treasures, Lake Waikaremoana and the smaller Lake Waikareiti. Experience the lake shore up close by tramping the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk.
As much of the park is remote and not easily accessible this has helped protect much of the park’s native wildlife. Te Urewera is unique in that it contains a

Tongariro National Park Established in 1887, Tongariro was the first national park in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. It is also a dual World Heritage area, a status which recognises the park’s important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.
This is a place of extremes and surprises, a place to explore and remember. From herb fields to forests, from tranquil lakes to desert-like plateau and active volcanoes - Tongariro has it all.
Location: Central North Island. The nearest towns are Turangi, National Park and Ohakune.
