    The story that Im going to tell you isthe story of the first Palm Sunday. TheSunday before Easter is known as PalmSunday. This is the day when

    Christiansremember how Jesus rodeinto Jerusalem on a donkey. As he rode,a large crowd of people welcomed himby waving palm branches in the air andshouting hosanna, which means saveus, but Im going to tell it from adifferent viewpoint. This is TheDonkeys Tale!

    Once upon a time, inBethany, a small village on the way to

    Jerusalem, on a road next to the marketstood a mother donkey and next to herwas her young son who was simplycalled Little Donkey. It was a hot day.

    Little Donkey was a coltwho was closeto his first birthday. He liked playingwith his older brothers and sisters andto trot around the market. He alsoloved when passers-by ruffledhishead, pattedhim and gave him nice

    things to eat, saying things like, what acutedonkey. Hed smile back and givethem a loud EE-AW , which alwaysseemed to make people chuckle.

    L. DONKEY: EE-AW!

    But now that Little Donkey was nearly one, he was

    starting to feel very nervous. The problem was that verysoon Little Donkey would have to let a person ride him forthe very first time.

    L. DONKEY: Mummy? Soon Im going to carry someone

    for the first time. What if Im not strong enough?

    M. DONKEY: Dont worry Little Donkey. Youre alreadystrong enough.

    L. DONKEY: But what if I get scared?

    M. DONKEY: There, there little one. The first time you letsomeone ride you, Ill be with you all the time. Thats thedonkey way.

    L. DONKEY: Mummy, can you remember thefirst time you were ridden?

    M. DONKEY: Yes and I remember talking to

    my mum beforehand, just like were talkingnow. Your Grandma told me that when shewas young she carried a lady called Maryfrom Nazareth to Bethlehem. Thats aroundeighty miles!

    L. DONKEY: WOW! I betshe was very soreafter that?

    M. DONKEY: No, not at all! God madedonkeys to carry people without feeling sore.

    L. DONKEY: Who rode you for the first time?

    M. DONKEY: It was Jesus when he waseleven, all the way from Nazareth to

    Jerusalem. It was fantastic!

    Little Donkey then talked with hismother about her time with Jesus and hisfamily. Mother Donkey said that after theydgot back to Nazareth she had helped Jesusand his dad all the time. They werecarpenters

    , making things out of wood, sothere were always heavy objects for her tocarry.

    Then when Jesus was a lot older, he stoppedbeing a carpenter and he started teachingpeople about God. Jesus gave Mother Donkeyto a new master, but told the man that oneday, when the donkey had had a child of herown, that he would need her help again.

    Little Donkey was amazed. Hed heard aboutJesus. Everyone in the market always talkedabout him. People said hed done amazingthings like making blind people see, calmingstorms, healing people and even turning

    water into wine!

    L. DONKEY: Did Jesus saywhen hed come for you orwhat hed need you for?

    M. DONKEY: No, the masterdidnt say. However, Ive got afeeling it will be very soon.

    As Little Donkeyconsidered all that hed justbeen told, two strangerssuddenly approached them.

    JAMES: Look John, the two donkeys are here, justlike Jesus said they would be!

    JOHN: Youre right, James. Its amazing. Hellodonkeys. You two are going to come with us. Jesusneeds your help.

    James and John started to untie the two

    donkeys. As they did so, the donkeys new mastercame running over.

    OWNER: HEY! Whats going on? Those donkeysbelong to me!

    JAMES: The Lord needs them now.

    OWNER: Oh... of course... anything for Jesus.I am very gladto be of service to him.

    JOHN: The Lord bless you for your kindness.

    James and John started to lead the donkeysaway. Little Donkey looked nervously at his

    mother who was following the men without aproblem. Little Donkey didnt want to movethough. Hed lived here all his life and had neverbeen more than a stones throw away from themarket area. He brayed loudly and stamped one of

    his hooves.

    JAMES: Shhh. Its okay little one. Were yourfriends. We wont hurt you.

    As he stroked Little Donkey and shushedhim again, Little Donkey saw his mum smiling as ifto say itsokay, Imhere with you. Little Donkeystarted to trot gently.

    JAMES: Good donkey!

    James and John led the animals a short distancedown the road to a small, grass covered clearing. There they

    found a happy crowd of eleven other men who started toput cloakson LittleDonkeysback!

    L. DONKEY: Ee-Aw! Mummy! What are they doing?

    M.DONKEY: Stay calm; its nothing to worry about.Theyre putting cloaks over you to act as a saddle so that

    someone can ride you.

    Then a tall, kind faced man walked overand stood in front of Little Donkey.

    M. DONKEY: Thats Jesus! Little Donkey,thats Jesus!

    JESUS: [to Mother Donkey] Hello again. Is itokay if I ride your child? [EE-AWs] Thank youvery much.

    Hello, Little Donkey. I know youve not beenridden before, but Im going to ride you nowand dont worry, Ill be very gentle with you.
