The Little Bookshelf Program is about encouraging parents to read to children.

Our core program provides low income families with a newborn 12 free books to support them in reading to their baby from

birth.

We serve dads! We serve moms!

More dads! And more moms!

We have served hundreds of families!

All receiving books to read to their babies during infancy!

In addition to providing free books to low-income families, we have work together to promote early literacy through reading to children!

…and at Storytime at Burden

We have done this…

…in several of its gardens!

…at LSU AgCenter’s AgMagic

We have even dressed up in costume on occasion to make it more fun for the kids!

You might ask, how did this happen?

Well, let me tell you a story!

Once upon a time there was a partnership… …between the

THE PARTNERS WORK TOGETHER TO PROMOTE EARLY LITERACY

IN OUR COMMUNITY

We prepare lots of book to distribute to

low-income families with newborns!

Books, books & more books!Tens of thousands of books!

We have training meetings!

And we have planning meetings!

And more planning meetings!

We promote literacy at many special community events!

At Dr. Seuss birthday events at EHS

At the LSU Preschool Lab…

and taping public service announcements

…and at LSU AgCenter’s AgMagic

At LA Book Festival! At Burden Center Garden Fest!

The crafts ranged

from ladybugs…

To butterflies!

To Lorax puppets

To crowns!

The sandwich board costumes we made were such fun for readings of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad books!

The costumes were a hit!

Another new activity for us this year was setting up reading corners at eleven classrooms at the YWCA Early Head Start ARC and Glen Oaks

Centers

We are so proud…

…of our reading corners at Early Head Start Centers!

We are having such… …rewarding experiences!

But the most important aspect of the partnership is getting those free books to children whose families might not otherwise be able to afford them!

Because its about helping parents help their kids to be literate ever after!
