Este maravilloso evento de fin de semana, conside-rado como uno de los mejores eventos internacionales de surf y stand-up paddle en América del Norte, recauda fondos para pro-yectos ambientales y educativos, incluye competencias de long-board, stand-up paddle surf, carreras SUP élite y de distancia. Además, la noche del sábado, 9 de marzo, el famoso cantante de reggae Mishka, hará una aparición en el Classic y realizará un concierto gratuito en la playa principal de Sayulita.

THE LIST vol.3 presenta el programa completo del evento Punta Sayulita Surf Classic, así como artículos interesan-tes sobre los proyectos comunitarios, entrevistas con embajado-res de surf como Fernando Stalla oriundo de Sayulita, y con la leyenda hawaiana - Gerry Lopez.

Welcome to the special edition of THE LIST magazine.

We will take a look at the 4th Annual Punta Sayulita Surf Classic. This wonderful weekend event, regarded as one of the leading international surfing and stand-up paddle events in North America, raises funds for environmental and educational projects, features longboard and stand-up paddle surfing con-tests, and SUP elite and distance races.

What’s more, on Saturday night, March 9, reggae re-cording artist Mishka, will make a repeat appearance at the Clas-sic and perform a free concert at Sayulita´s main beach.

THE LIST vol.3 features the entire Punta Sayulita Surf Classic event program, as well as insightful articles on local community projects, and interviews with surf ambassadors such as Sayulita´s own Fernando Stalla and Hawaiian surf legend Gerry Lopez.

Hace casi cuatro años, la idea de una competen-cia por invitación para surf y stand up paddle surgió. Nuestra visión entonces era sencilla-mente organizar un fin de semana divertido y apartado con un propósito social y mucha ca-maradería tanto en la playa como fuera de ella. Simplemente usar la energía positiva del “Aloha Spirit” y surfear para ayudar a crear conciencia ambiental.

El Punta Sayulita Classic desde entonces ha evo-lucionado hasta convertirse en un evento mucho más grande de lo que cualquiera de nosotros jamás esperó, con impactos económicos que ha-blan bien de nuestra misión llena de propósito. Gracias al apoyo de nuestros generosos patro-cinadores corporativos, donantes particulares, venta de souvenirs, las cuotas de registro y otras fuentes, el programa Reef Check EcoDiver para el Área de Sayulita / Bahía de Banderas ha ca-pacitado a más de dos docenas de buzos certifi-cados y dispuesto clases de educación ambiental para alumnos de primaria y secundaria de Sayulita. Más recientemente, el Instituto Tecnológico de Bahía de Banderas (ITBB) ha logrado poner a disposición de los estudiantes de biología marina, como materia op-tativa, la capacitación de Reef Check EcoDiver, con el programa ahora expandiéndose para incluir el desarrollo de un proyecto de restauración/plantación de un “Jardín de Coral” por el cual se trasplantará coral a locaciones costeras de fácil acceso para que sirvan de salones de clase costeros para que todos vean y aprendan.

Los fondos recaudados durante el evento de Punta Sayulita Classic tam-bién se otorgan a los programas de desarrollo infantil de la Fundación Punta Sayulita que directamente apoyan a los niños de escuelas de Sayu-lita con programas de arte y música, programas de educación ambiental y programas de desarrollo de surf y stand-up paddle.

Hola! On behalf of the Punta Sayulita resort community, the Riviera Nayarit Tourism Board, our sponsors, competitors, event volunteers, as well as the residents of Sayulita, we welcome you to our beautiful seaside pueblo of Sayu-lita for the 4th annual Punta Sayulita Classic!

About four years ago the idea of a small, invitation-only surf and standup paddle competition came to be. Our vision then was simply to organize a fun, laid-back weekend with a social purpose as well as lots of camaraderie both on-shore and off. Simply put, use the positive energy of the “Aloha spirit” and surfing to help foster environmental awareness.

The Punta Sayulita Classic has since evolved into an event larger than any of us ever expected, with economic impacts that speak well to our purpose-ful mission. Thanks to the support from our gener-ous corporate sponsors, private donors, proceeds from merchandise sales, registration fees and other sources, the Reef Check EcoDiver program for the Sayulita/Bay of Banderas Area has now trained more than two-dozen certified divers and provided for environmental educational classes for Sayulita primary and secondary schoolchildren. More re-

cently, the Instituto Tecnológico de Bahía de Banderas (ITBB) has been able to make Reef Check EcoDiver training available as an elective to all of its marine biology students with the program now expanding to in-clude the development of a “Coral Garden” restoration/plantation proj-ect whereby coral will be transplanted to easy-to-reach, coastal locations to serve as near shore classrooms for all to see and understand.

And proceeds raised from the Punta Sayulita Classic are also awarded to the Punta Sayulita Foundation’s children development programs which directly support schoolchildren of Sayulita with art & music programs, environmental education programs as well as surfing & stand-up pad-dling development programs.

Además de la educación, estamos activamente involucrados en la conser-vación marina. Estamos trabajando con las coo-perativas de pescadores para ayudar a diseñar programas de pesca sustentables y Áreas Prote-gidas Marinas de modo que todos tengamos pe-ces suficientes, abulón y langosta para comer a 20 años de hoy. A big WELCOME to the 4th Annual Punta Sayu-lita Classic from the Reef Check Foundation and from our thousands of our volunteers around the world. Like you, we love the ocean, not only for the amazing waves but also for all the incredible marine life that helps to keep our planet healthy. Since 1997, Reef Check has been working with local communities in over 90 countries to edu-cate kids and adults about the value of marine life, threats to ocean health and solutions to these problems. By participating in the 4th An-nual Punta Sayulita Classic you are all helping to support our efforts here in Mexico to take good care of our ocean resources.

Our core program is “immersion learning.” We try to get everyone into the water with a mask and snorkel to see for themselves the majestic beauty of marine life and learn how all the or-ganisms are connected to each other and to us. Here in Sayulita, we have trained about 20 local volunteer scuba divers in the Reef Check Eco-Diver methods and they have carried out a series of surveys of fish and shellfish living on rocky reefs near Sayulita to track their health.

This year we are pleased to announce that we have signed an agreement with Instituto Tecno-logico de Bahia de Banderas to make Reef Check EcoDiver training available to all of their marine biology students. In addition to education, we are actively involved in marine conservation. We are working with fishermen’s cooperatives to help design sustainable fishing programs and Marine Protected Areas so that we all have plenty of fish, abalone and lobster to eat 20 years from now. With your support, we will also continue to expand our programs of marine science educa-tion in the local schools in the coastal towns of the Bay. ue hace 4 años que empecé a visitar Sayulita con frecuencia y durante una de mis visitas la idea de un torneo de surf por invitación para ayudar a promover conciencia sobre el cambio ambiental surgió mientras surfeaba con amigos. Y 4 años más

tarde, con la asociación y apoyo de la comunidad residencial de Punta Sayulita, es increíble ver como el Punta Sayulita Classic se ha convertido en un evento reconocido a nivel internacional que continúa transmitien-do el mensaje sobre la conciencia ambiental.

La Fundación ECO-Warrior inspira y guía a las generaciones más jóve-nes para experimentar estilos de vida más sanos para sí mismos y para la tierra. Preservamos los océanos y las playas a través del activismo, educación y tutorías, los tres pilares de la Fundación ECO-Warrior. A través de esto, animamos a los niños a ser más curiosos e interesados en la salvaguarda de los ecosistemas en los que viven y en los que pueden vivir durante sus vidas.

El primer Proyecto misión de ECO-Warrior, en participación con “Save the Waves” (Salven las Olas) se llevó a cabo en la primavera del 2006 al sur de Chile cuando la fábrica de celulosa Celco puso en operación la planta de pulpa de celulosa más grande de Sudamérica, a pesar de recién haber sido encontrada culpable de contaminación de una reserva de la biósfera de la UNESCO y matando a miles de cisnes de cuello negro en peligro de extinción. James Pribram visitó Chile para participar en una protesta pública contra la nueva planta de celulosa, la cual resultó ser inmensamente exitosa en la creación de conciencia mundial sobre las inminentes amenazas sobre la calidad del agua y de las olas en Chile. La meta de esta campaña continua ha sido el establecer estándares ambien-tales más altos, forzar el cumplimiento por parte de la industria de la celulosa, y el involucrar al Gobierno Chileno en el monitoreo y ejecución de nuevos reglamentos.

Desde entonces, la Fundación ECO-Warrior ha asumido batallas simila-res desde la implementación de un nuevo servicio de remoción de basura en Bali hasta viajar a regiones costeras amenazadas por la contaminación y el sobre-desarrollo. Las metas de estas expediciones son el ayudar a las personas, gobiernos y desarrolladores a trabajar juntos en modos que complementen las necesidades humanas y el medioambiente, especial-mente con respecto a zonas de rompimiento de olas que se encuentran en peligro de verse comprometidas o perdidas por siempre.

Una de nuestras más grandes alegrías en la Fundación ECO-Warrior es el trabajar con la siguiente generación de ECO-Warriors a través de nues-tros eventos basados en la comunidad y estoy muy emocionado de volver a Sayulita para el 4to Torneo Anual Punta Sayulita Classic, después de visitar y albergar varias competencias de ensayo con la Escuela Inter-nacional Costa Verde y el año pasado otorgar el primer premio Poder de Cambio ECO-Warrior, el cual incluyó una tabla de surf nueva para el ganador, el pequeño Osmar de diez años de edad, quien demostró un gran crecimiento en sus habilidades de liderazgo entre sus compañeros. Este año estamos mezclando un poco al promocionar una limpieza de playa y simposio educativo con clases de ECO-arte para niños, así como también una clínica de Surfing/SUP para que la disfruten todos los niños en el poblado. Más aun, anhelo con entusiasmo por otorgar el premio Poder de Cambio de este año y continuar nuestro trabajo con los ECO-Warriors de Sayulita.

It was 4 years ago when I started frequently visiting Sayulita and dur-ing one of my visits the idea for an invitational surf contest to help raise awareness for environmental change came about while surfing with friends. And 4 years later with the partnership and support of the Punta Sayulita resort community it is amazing to see how the Punta Sayulita Classic has grown into internationally recognized event that continues to communicate the message of environmental awareness.

The ECO-Warrior Foundation inspires and guides younger generations in living a healthier lifestyle for themselves and the earth. We preserve oceans and beaches through activism, education and mentoring, the three pillars of The ECO-Warrior Foundation. Through this, we lead children to be more curious and interested in safekeeping of environ-ments in which they live and may enter during their lifetimes.

The first ECO-Warrior Project mission, in partnership with Save the Waves, took place in the spring of 2006 in the south of Chile when the pulp manufacturing company Celco brought South America’s largest pulp mill into operation, despite just having been found guilty of pollut-ing a UNESCO biosphere reserve and killing thousands of endangered black neck swans. James Pribram visited Chile to participate in a public protest against the new pulp mill, which proved to be immensely success-ful at raising awareness worldwide about the imposing threats to Chiles waves and water quality. The goal of this ongoing campaign has been to establish higher environmental standards, force compliance of the pulp mill industry, and to involve the Government of Chile in the monitoring and enforcement of new regulations.

Since then, The ECO-Warrior Foundation has taken on similar battles from implementing a new trash removal service in Bali to traveling to coastline regions being threatened by pollution and overdevelopment. The goal of these expeditions are to help people, governments and de-velopers work together in ways that complement human needs and the environment, especially with regard to surf breaks that are in danger of being compromised or lost forever.

One of our biggest joys at the ECO-Warrior Foundation is working with the next generation of ECO-Warriors through our community based events and I am excited to return back to Sayulita for the 4th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic. After visiting and hosting various essay contests with the Sayulita primary and secundary schools and last year awarding the first ECO-Warrior Power of Change award which included a brand new surf board for the winner, 10-year old Osmar, who demonstrated great growth in his leadership skills among his classmates. This year we are mixing it up a bit with hosting a beach clean-up and educational sym-posium with children’s ECO-art classes as well as a Surfing/SUP clinic for all of the kids in town to enjoy. Moreover, I look forward to awarding this year’s Power of Change award and continuing our work with Sayulita’s ECO-Warriors.

In addition to the surfing and SUP race competitions held over the week-end, on Friday, March 8th, the festivities kick-off with a surfing clinic for special needs and underprivileged children under the supervision of re-nowned Malibu, CA longboard surfer, Jimmy Gamboa, and members of his THERAsurf Foundation along with other participating professionals and instructors from local Sayulita surf schools.

The THERAsurf foundation is a diverse collective of parents, profession-als, and members of the surf community committed to the belief that there is healing energy in the power of the ocean. Their goal is to provide children with special needs the opportunity to benefit from that positive energy by safely getting them into the water, and up on waves. They help children and their families access the stoke of surf culture, and aspire to create a can-do environment in a world full of limitations. They em-brace the notion that surfing is therapy and believe in its transforma-tional power, its ability to instil courage and confidence. Witness a child who cannot walk bombing down the face of a head-high wave, and learn what it means to be inspired. They honour the life-altering effects of these experiences, and the unforgettable memories they provide for kids and their families.

THERAsurf holds that all children are equal, regardless of race, religion, or alibility, yet respect their individual needs and differences. a Fundación Punta Sayulita (“FPS”) es una orga-nización sin fines de lucro fundada con el propósito de apoyar varias iniciativas comunitarias para la co-

munidad de Sayulita y el área de la Bahía de Banderas.

Estas iniciativas incluyen programas educativos para la con-ciencia medioambiental y su protección incluyendo, sin limi-tar, el Programa Reef Check Eco-Diver, y programas de arte y desarrollo musical infantil, eventos de limpieza de playas organizados por la comunidad, así como también el apoyo a programas para jóvenes para darles la oportunidad de dis-frutar varios deportes acuáticos tales como el surf, stand-up paddle, kayaks, pesca, etc.

Los fondos reunidos del Punta Sayulita Classic serán entrega-dos para dar apoyo a estos programas.

The Punta Sayulita Foundation (“PSF”) is a non-profit orga-nization founded for the purpose of supporting various com-munity initiatives for the community of Sayulita and the Bay of Banderas area.

Initiatives include educational programs for environmental awareness and protection including, but not limited to, the Reef Check Eco-Diver Program, children’s art and music de-velopment programs, community organized beach cleanup events as well as supporting youth programs for water sports such as surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, etc.

Proceeds raised from the Punta Sayulita Classic will go to-wards supporting these initiatives.

n sábado por la mañana cada dos meses Punta Sayulita organiza el evento denominado limpieza de playa en Sayu-lita, en donde los residentes y turistas voluntarios patrul-lan las playas y calles de Sayulita para recoger basura y

artículos reciclables. Además del esfuerzo de recolección de basura, la educación es una parte importante del evento, en donde, a través de la literatura e imágenes se muestra la importancia del cuidado y protección al medio ambiente, el reciclaje y la limpieza constante de Sayulita.

La limpieza de playa se ha convertido en un evento muy popular en la comunidad y ha servido para potenciar el valor de hacer la difer-encia. Este evento se ha vuelto tan exitoso que comenzó a participar en conjunto con la organización Ocean Conservancy y gracias a ella cada mes de Septiembre celebramos la Limpieza Internacional de Costas y Cuerpos de Agua, evento al cual se unen más de cien mil voluntarios en todo el mundo.

Los desechos encontrados mayormente durante estas limpiezas de playa suelen ser botellas de Plástico (PET), colillas de cigarro, latas de refrescos y cervezas, tapas de botellas y bolsas de plástico.

El comité del evento Punta Sayulita Classic además de las perso-nas que habitamos en este hermoso pueblo de Sayulita, pedimos a todos los visitantes que tengan respeto por el medio ambiente y ayúdenos a mantener Sayulita limpia.

Por favor recuerden seguir esta regla muy simple – Reduce, Reusa y Recicla!

About every two months on a Saturday mornings, Punta Sayulita organizes community-wide beach cleanups, where volunteer resi-dents, schoolchildren and visitors walk the beaches and streets of Sayulita to collect garbage and recyclable items. In addition to the effort of collecting the garbage and keeping our beaches and town clean, education is an important component of the event. With the aid of educational displays, pictures and through keeping statistics on the types of items collected, these tools help communicate the importance of environmental awareness and protection.

Since the first organized beach cleanup event in 2009, the beach cleanups have become a very popular social occasion in Sayulita and has served to highlight the value of making a difference in one’s community. Moreover, because of the Sayulita community’s enthu-siasm for the event, other communities in the Bay of Banderas initi-ated similar beach cleanup events at their local beaches.

We are also very proud of our partnership with the Ocean Conser-vancy organization, and thanks to it, every September we celebrate a beach cleanup in Sayulita in conjunction with the Ocean Con-servancy’s International Costal Cleanup Day, an event involving thousands of volunteers around the world participating in beach and waterway cleanups.

On behalf of the Punta Sayulita Classic and the Sayulita commu-nity, we hope you enjoy your time in Sayulita during the weekend’s festivities and ask all of our visitors to pitch-in and help us keep Sayulita clean.

l ver a surfistas no era nada nuevo para Fernando Stalla, quien se mudó a Sa-yulita a la edad de 12, después de vi-

vir en Brasil y Costa Rica. Observaba cómo los expatriados aventureros jugaban en las olas de su pueblo, eventualmente uniéndoseles en las olas. Lo que fue nuevo, sin embargo, fue la visión, hace como cuatro años, de Ryan Helm montando una tabla de standup.

Y luego un torneo de standup llegó a Sayulita. Esto sí era algo nuevo. Stalla recuerda evaluar las habilidades de Helm: “si el lo está haciendo, y es realmente bueno, y todos los hawaianos buena onda lo están haciendo, entonces standup es de-finitivamente genial”, dice. “Y siempre fui un sur-fista medio raro, alto y de brazos largos. De modo que el standup pareció venirme muy bien.”

En menos de tres años Stalla, con 25 años, se forjó su camino al nivel de la élite de competidores. No solo fue el campeón nacional mexicano del 2012, sino que también obtuvo el título del campeonato US SUP 2011, y ganó la Carrera Elite del Cam-peonato Mundial SUP Hennessey 2012 en Cabo, México. La victoria junto con su 2do lugar en la Carrera de Distancia fueron suficientes para darle el título de campeón general por delante de Chase Kosterlitz y Ryan Helm.

“Tengo mucho apoyo,” dice Stalla. “No hay mu-cho dinero en México, pero la empresa de desa-rrollo Punta Sayulita ha cubierto mis gastos en el Tour Mundial. Rouge me proporciona las tablas para competir. Cuando llegué a California para mis primeras competencias, tenía que pedir ta-blas prestadas.”

Fernando es una amenaza real en todas las carre-ras en las cuales participa, así que no lo pierdas de vista durante el Punta Sayulita Classic.

The sight of surfers was nothing new to Fernando Stalla, who moved to Sayulita when he was 12 af-ter living in Brazil and Costa Rica. He watched as the expat adventurers played in the waves of his hometown, eventually joining them in the surf. What was new, however, was the sight, about four years ago, of longtime expat Ryan Helm riding a standup board.

Then a standup contest hit town. Now this was really something new. Stalla remembers assessing Helm´s skills: “if he’s doing it, and he’s really good, and all the cool Hawaiians are doing it, then it’s definitely cool”, he says. “ And I was always kind of a weird surfer, tall with long arms. So standup seemed to fit.”

In less than three years, Stalla, 25, stroked his way into racing’s elite level. He was not only Mexico’s 2012 national champion, but also took the stock class title at the 2011 U.S. SUP championships, and has won the Elite Race at the 2012 Hen-nessey’s World SUP Championships in Cabo, Mexico. The victory, along with his 2nd place in the Distance Race, was enough to give him the overall championship title ahead of Chase Koster-litz and Ryan Helm.

“I’ve got so much support”, Stalla says. “There is not much money in Mexico, but Punta Sayulita Development Company has covered my expenses on the World Tour. Rouge gives me boards to race. When I went to California for my first com-petition I had to borrow boards.”

Fernando is a genuine threat in every race he enters, so look out for him during the upcoming Punta Sayulita Classic.

MISHKA

ishka se presentó en el Punta Sayuli-ta Classic del 2011 y está de regre-

so para la presentación de su debut de nueva música del su nuevo mini-álbum listo para su publicación por la Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records.

Nacido en Bermudas y criado en el Caribe, Mishka es un via-jero y un marino de corazón. Un espíritu libre, cuya lírica, melodías y pliegues son refle-jos de las raíces y de la cultu-ra en la que creció; la música de Mishka es caribeña en su médula, y sin embargo es un sonido ecléctico que contiene muchos elementos y géneros. Desde cargadas raíces de re-ggae con bajos, a melodiosas baladas acústicas, canciones de amor, canciones de justicia social y consciencia, tiene que escucharlo por sí mismo y ex-perimentar la música.

cho tiempo y ha competido en los pasados dos años en el Punta

Sayulita Classic además de impartir sus populares clínicas de SUP

en Punta de Mita. Pensamos en obtener los puntos de vista del Mr.

Pipeline sobre el crecimiento del SUP, surf y sus visitas a México.

Gerry Lopez has been an ambassador for the sport of surfing for

a long time and has competed in the past two years at the Punta

Sayulita Classic as well as hosting his popular SUP clinics in Punta

de Mita. We thought we would get some insights from “Mr. Pipe-

line” on the growth of SUP, surfing and his visits to Mexico.

1. ¿Qué piensas de Sayulita y su co-munidad surfista?

Sayulita es un maravilloso lugar. Su comunidad consiste de gente hermosa, muchos de los cuales se han convertido en mis amigos.

2. ¿Cuál es tu punto favorito para sur-fear en México?

El Faro, ubicado cerca de Punta de Mita.

3. Cómo te involucraste en el SUP? ¿y qué lo hace tan especial?

El SUP me ha dado la opción de ir a surfear de modo diferente y he encon-trado que lo disfruto muchísimo. Era algo nuevo y pienso que lo que hizo no solo para mí, sino para muchos de mis amigos que han surfeado por más de 50 años, como que revivió la emoción que solíamos sentir cuando comenzamos a surfear. Era más divertido que el surf normal.

4. Has estado viniendo a Sayulita por el último par de años para competir en el Punta Sayulita Classic, ¿por qué te gusta venir a este evento?

Es un evento maravilloso; generalmen-te es el primer evento de la comunidad SUP para el inicio de la temporada de modo que muchas personas talentosas

vienen. El evento está muy bien orga-nizado y la comunidad realmente da el ancho. Siempre nos divertimos mucho ahí aun y cuando las olas no estén muy buenas. Todo mundo se la pasa bien.

5. Cuando vienes a México, ¿qué otro lugar a parte de Sayulita visitas?

Punta de Mita.

6. ¿Qué significa el surf para ti?

Es algo que he hecho desde que tenía 10 años. Han sido 55 años que he estado surfeando. Me gusta tanto como siem-pre me ha gustado y planeo continuar haciéndolo por tanto tiempo como pueda.

7. ¿Cuál es tu punto favorito para sur-fear de todos?

Sunset Beach, Hawái.

8. ¿Quiénes son algunas de las perso-nas que tú sientes están moldeando el futuro del surf hoy?

Pienso que surfistas profesionales de punta como Kelly Slater y Rob Macha-do, personas como ellos son realmente grandiosos embajadores del deporte del surf. Cuando primero empecé, el surf era un deporte muy poco importante y sin reconocimiento. Las personas no lo tenían en buen concepto, pero gracias a

Kelly y otros excelentes surfistas, el surf se ha convertido en un deporte líder y ha atraído a un público más amplio en todo el mundo.

9. De todos los lugares a los que has viajado, ¿qué lugar en particular so-bresale?

¡Me encanta México! Muchas de las personas aquí tienen el mismo espíritu Aloha que encuentras en Hawái.

10. ¿Qué organizaciones y causas apo-yas?Save our Surf (Salven nuestro Surf) – una organización fundada en Hawái. Ha estado activa desde 1960, muy ins-trumental en tratar de preservar los puntos de surf y las playas de Hawái.

11. ¿Cuál es el secreto de Gerry López para mantenerse en forma y saluda-ble?El Yoga se ha convertido en un cimiento fundamental de mi vida, y por supuesto el surf. Amabas son actividades genia-les que mantendrán tu cuerpo fuerte.

12. ¿A qué te dedicas hoy en día?

Bueno hoy fui a deslizarme por la nive en mi tabla de snowboard…vivo en Oregón ahora. Aun viajo bastante, en su mayoría por surf, y divido mi tiempo entre Oregón y Hawái.

Sayulita is a wonderful place. Its surf community consists of beautiful peo-ple, many of whom have become my friends. 2. What is your favorite surf spot in Mexico?

El Faro, located not far from Punta de Mita. 3. How did you get involved in SUP? And what is so special about it?

SUP has given me an option to go surf-ing in a different way and I found I enjoyed it very much. It was new and I think that what it did not only for my-self, but for a lot of my friends that have been surfing over 50 years; it kind of rekindled the excitement that we used to have when we first started surfing. It was a lot of fun, more fun than we have been having in regular surfing. 4. You have been coming to Sayulita for the past couple of years to compete in the Punta Sayulita Classic, why do you like coming to this event?

It is a wonderful event; it is generally the first event of the stand up paddle community for the start of the season so a lot of talented young guys come.

The event is very well organized and the community really puts up for it. We al-ways have a lot of fun there even when the waves are not too good. Everybody has the good time. 5. When you come to Mexico, what place other than Sayulita do you tend to visit?

Punta de Mita. 6. What meaning does surfing hold for you?

It is something that I’ve done since I was 10 years old. It has been 55 years that I have been surfing. I like it as much as I always liked it and I plan to continue doing it for as long as I can.

7. What is your all-time favorite surf spot?

Sunset Beach, Hawaii.

8. Who are some of the people you feel are shaping the future for surfing today?

I think that top professional surfers like Kelly Slater and Rob Machado, people like them are really wonderful ambas-sadors for the sport of surfing. When I first started, surfing was a very small sport with no recognition. People did not think highly of it, but thanks to

Kelly and other excellent surfers, surf-ing has become mainstream sport and it has attracted a much broader audi-ence worldwide.

9. Of all the places you have traveled to, what place in particular stands out?

I love Mexico! Bunch of people down there have the same aloha spirit that you find in Hawaii.

10. What organizations & causes do you support?

Save our Surf - an organization found-ed in Hawaii. It has been around since 1960´s, very instrumental in trying to preserve surfing spots and beaches of Hawaii. 11. What is the Gerry Lopez´ secret to stay healthy and in shape?

Yoga has become a strong foundation of my life, and of course surfing. Both are great activities that will keep your body strong.

12. What are you up to nowadays?

Well today I went snowboarding…I live in Oregon now. I still travel quite a bit, mostly for surfing, and divide my time between Oregon and Hawaii.

NOVILLERO

La vista no alcanza para admirar por completo la playa más extensa no sólo de Nayarit, sino de todo el país: playa Novillero, que se extiende por casi 90 kilómetros de largo y casi medio kilómetro de fina arena, el perfecto complemento para sus tranquilas aguas, que pueden ser caminadas por los visitantes hasta cien metros mar adentro, por lo que es considerada una de las más seguras del estado.

It’s impossible to see from one side to the other of the longest beach not only in Nayarit, but also in Mexico. Playa Novillero is over 56 miles long over 520 yards wide, perfectly complemented by its calm and shallow wa-ter, which allows visitors to walk almost 110 yards into the ocean, making it one of the safest beaches in Nayarit.

MEXCALTITÁN

Visitar la isla de Mexcaltitán, ubicada al noroeste de Santiago Ixcuintla es, literalmente una mágica experiencia.
