What does it take to be a writer and an illustrator? That was a hard question for second graders to answer. However, as we worked our way through the process of writing, illustrating, and publishing a book, we found the answer. It is hard work.

As I reflect back to the beginning of the year in September, I remember asking Mrs. Kayla Raut, my writing teacher, if she thought we as a class could write a book to be published. As always, she was positive and said “let’s try it!” We are so glad that we took that step. Now the second grade students in Room 107, are published authors.

We started out by reading the book, The Important Book, written by Margaret Wise. After brainstorming several ideas

of what each child thought what was important about them they wrote their most important thing on the first and last lines of their writing. Additional details were added to give an overall picture of the child to the reader. The students also illustrated their page to reflect what they had written about themselves. After 6 weeks of making our way through the writing process, we sent our book to Student Treasures to be published.

The books arrived in mid-January and we decided to have an Author’s celebration. We invited parents, grandparents, the elementary principal, and our superintendent to join us in our book reveal. During the celebration each student read their page of the book, received an author’s certificate, and enjoyed cake and punch with their families.

We are excited to share this book with you. You can find a copy of our published book in our school library as well as the Kellogg Free Library in Cincinnatus. Submitted by: Lori Rice Second Grade teacher

i AM UNAFRAiDStudents in grades UPK – 6 attended a special assembly in January by Dr. Jay Banks. Dr. Banks has appeared on Nickelodeon, written with Disney Productions, was featured on the Hallmark Channel, and currently resides in Nashville, TN. Dr. Banks developed his anti-bullying program; i AM UNAFRAiD, based on his original program Stamp Out Bullying, Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports, bullying research for his doctorate, and 37 years of experience. Dr. Banks taught the students four strategies they can apply to decrease bullying incidents. A – Avoid Bullies. Research has shown that if students avoid bullies, they will be 75% successful in preventing bullying incidents. F – Find a Friend. Students should “never, ever be

alone in school or in the neighborhood.” R – Report Bullying. Research-based studies indicate that 64% of students DID NOT report bullying incidents when they occurred. Students do tell their peers, so be a friend and report bullying incidents together! A – Act Confident. “Get your swagger on” walking in the hallways with your head up and shoulders back, being purposeful, and by following the A – F – R principles, you will be acting confident. Today is your day to create a new iD for yourself and your Cincinnatus school community! ~Submitted by: Mrs. Aitchison, School Social Worker

School Board Elections & Budget Vote Please note that, in accordance with law, our school will be

using the new electronic rating machines for our May 17, 2016 School Board Elections and Budget Vote.

Dr. Banks was VERY entertaining, the students really en-joyed his silly antics that he used to get his message out.

Dr. Banks reveals the A (Avoid Bullies) as the first step to Stamp Out Bullying.

On January 15th and 16th, several members of the 7/8 chorus attended the Cortland All-County Chorus Festival. They joined about 80 other select 7th and 8th grade students from Cortland, Homer, Marathon, and McGraw schools for a full weekend of music-making. Brian Adams, Ashley Camarda, Michaela Eichorst, Kiana Guinn, Alex Hegedus, and Hope Loomis spent the weekend learning and memorizing songs with other students under the direction of Kristina Ruffo, a music teacher from Maine-Endwell.

Student Senate News

Welcome back! Though the new year is in full swing, the Student Senate did a fantastic job keeping things cheerful for the holiday season. The Variety Show was a success; everyone had fun, participated on stage, and created an excited atmosphere for the holidays around the corner. Make sure to thank Chris Price and Alexis Flint for putting on such a great show!

The senators are keeping busy, though. Coming this spring, the Student Senate will be hosting a fundraiser to raise money for the Honors Students Incentive field trip this summer. We will keep you updated on dates and the items we will be selling! Also this spring, the Student Senate will be hosting the annual Semi-Formal dance. It was originally scheduled for Sat. Feb. 27th, but due to scheduling complications the date will be pushed to Sat. March 5th. Hope to see all 9-12 students there!

Musical Events Keep Coming Up Quickly!

Likewise, four members of the Senior High Chorus rehearsed with Dr. Stephen Wilson from SUNY Cortland to prepare a challenging program of music. Keyara Aiken, Dylan Barber, Cody Metcalf and Mary Rose rehearsed along with other selected students from throughout Cortland County and presented a high-quality performance of music in many different styles.

Their concert was a huge success. If you see these students, congratulate them on their honor!

Coming up on February 5th and 6th, Keyara Aiken and Dylan Barber will also be participating in the 2016 Zone 3 Senior High Area All-State Festival. This festival is held at Ithaca College involving students from throughout central

New York. Selection for this event is based on the students’ NYSSMA scores from last spring’s solo festivals. Please note that the concert for this event will be held at 6 PM on Saturday, Feb. 6 in Ford Hall at the Whalen Music Center on the Ithaca College campus. There is an admission charge of $7; tickets may be purchased at the door.At the end of the month, Cincinnatus will once again host the All-County Elementary Band and Jazz Band Festival. For this event, Amelia Newton (flute), James Johnson (trombone) and Kooper Vosburg (percussion) will be playing with other students from Cortland County schools. Their guest conductor will be Mrs. Robin DeSantis, a retired band director from Windsor School District (who was a classmate of Mr. Koch’s at Potsdam!). The entire event will take place on Friday, Feb. 26, with the concert beginning at 7 PM in the Wilbur Auditorium. Admission is free of charge.

The character trait for January and February is Responsibility. The Elementary students learned all about Responsibility, Respect, and Resilience at their CARES assembly. Be sure to ask them what their “R” looks

The Student Senate held a variety show for high school students on December 23rd. The Student Senate planned many fun events for classes in grades 9-12 to compete in, such as Gingerbread Boy Construction, Limbo, andTie Decorating. The grade levels would get points based on their performances. There was also a joint musical performance by Keyara Aiken and Cody Metcalf. Each year there is a wall decorating contest where students create a Christmas themed mural to represent their class. The murals are judged by a group of teachers and the winning wall is announced at the show. The winner of the wall decorating was the 9th grade class. All grade levels participated in the Variety Show with good attitudes and humor. Everyone in the auditorium had some laughs. Teachers were also included in this fun day by being judges for the events. The Student Senate spent a lot of time coming up with game ideas, preparing for and cleaning up the variety show. This event has been

going on for several years and is something that is enjoyed by all involved and we hope to continue it in the future. The Variety Show is just what everyone needs right before Christmas break.

CARES: Responsibility

like to them! We had a special guest attend from Country Acres in Homer, NY. His name is Cooper and he is a Labrador retriever! The Elementary students learned how they could show responsibility and help Cooper and his friends. Great news was also shared – you have filled the tab bucket three times!! Keep up the great work! Our students who achieved Assertion awards were recognized and received their t-shirt to wear for the day and at following CARES assemblies (pictured below). These students were: Joslyn Backus, Janice Deiss, Wyatt Jordan, Kurtis Turshman, Rachael Standish, Camryn Crothers, John Ryan, Sailor Stith, Lydia Andre, Penelope Gardner, Brayden Silva, Cassia Schuyler, Andi Marshall, Lois-Rose Whaley, Baylee

Pittsley, and Katie Metcalf. Way to show your CARES at Cincinnatus. Keep up the great character and remember to do what

In the next few months, each high school student will be met with individually to talk about their 2016-2017 courses. In these meetings, we talk about how the current school year is going, their grades, career and future plans, and classes/credits needed to graduate. It is important that students think about how each school year can affect the next and the classes they would like to take. If you have any questions about these meetings, please feel free to call the Guidance Office, 607-863-3200, option 3.

Banana Splits Lunch Group

Has your family experienced a parental separation or divorce? Are you living with a step-child(ren), new spouse, or new family? If so, your student may benefit from Banana Splits group. In the Banana Splits counseling group, your child will have the opportunity to talk about their feelings and connect with other children experiencing a similar situation. It has been found that having the opportunity to share this experience with other students who are making similar adjustments is very helpful.

The Banana Splits group is being offered to grades 5 and 6. The Banana Splits group is for students who live in families that have experienced some structural changes such as divorce, death of a parent or remarriage and blended families. Since classroom time is so precious, we will be meeting during the students’ lunch periods.

Banana Splits groups will be separated by grade level(s) based on the number of students interested. Starting in February, each group will meet one time per week for approximately 8 weeks. You will receive a letter from me stating the meeting day and time once they are set.

If you would like your student to participate in Banana Splits, be on the lookout for permission slips that will be coming home soon or feel free to contact Mrs. MacDonald in the Guidance Office for a permission slip. Please note that you must have legal custody (can be joint also) to register your child for Banana Splits. I assure you that I will respect your family’s confidentiality. Please feel free to contact me at 863-3200 option 3 if you have any questions. Submitted by Mrs. MacDonald – Middle School Counselor

The Cincinnatus Central School District works to convey information to students, parents, businesses and community members in a variety of ways. One major source of information is the school district website which can be found on the Internet at www.cc.cnyric.org.

Another method of communication within the district is this publication, The Lion's Roar, which is produced by students enrolled in the high school course, Computer Publications. The newsletter is published entirely by students and the printing completed by OCM BOCES. In addition to the website and newsletter, there are also a variety of classroom newsletters, grade reports and parent memos sent home via students and/or mail.

The purpose of these communication tools is to share information about our district, to showcase student, faculty, and staff endeavors, as well as provide resources for students, parents, community members and faculty. We welcome input from all of the school community in making this communication more efficient and more valuable. In utilizing new technologies the district may want to post children's work or pictures on our website and/or in district publications. This could include photos, writings, artwork, or videos recorded for our in-house TV station. Parents or guardians who do NOT wish to have their child’s name and/or photograph on the district web site, in student video productions, in the newsletter or other publications, must notify the district in writing of their wishes. This must be done each school year. Please send any related correspondence to:
