The Holidays are fast approaching! By the time this reaches you your Thanksgiving celebrations will be wonderful memories and we will all be preparing for our Christmas, Hanukah and/or year-end festivities. I hope you have a blessed Holiday season. Your District Leadership has been busy taking care of business and attending educational conferences. Our Region 7 Summit was a great success. There were wonderful speakers, activities and fellowship. If you were not able to attend, you missed a great time. We have planned dates and locations for our Spring Education Workshops. We generally hold three sessions, one each in February, and two in March, and try to geographically space them out so no one must travel very far to attend. The cost of the seminar and lunch is covered by the District, so there would be no monetary contribution required from the sponsoring club. I am excited to see so many of Ohio-West Virginia District’s Exchange Clubs listing their Programs of Service in National’s website! There are so many extraordinary reasons to enter the projects you do. Many clubs are active in placing all those colorful patches onto Service Awards banners and using them as a recruitment tool. Even if your club is not one to display a Service Awards banner, there are many other important reasons to enter your projects. Did you know that our National Exchange Club Foundation uses all that wonderful information when writing grants for government, corporate and private funds? Let’s help them get more money to support our efforts by making sure we enter everything we do. Another reason is so your club can earn the National Service Award (NSA). I would love to see 100% of our District’s clubs receive the NSA. As this calendar year ends and I complete my first 6 months in office, I am very thankful for every Exchange Club member in our district. I appreciate everything you do to inspire your community to become a better place to live. I can’t imagine how different our communities and lives would be without Exchange. Let’s continue to bring more people into the fold and grow this fantastic organization. Don’t forget to mark your calendar! May 16, 2020 is the date for the Ohio-West Virginia District Convention, and it will be in Fremont. The District Board meeting will be held in the afternoon on Friday, May 15. Please plan to join us. All board meetings are open to any Exchange Club member. There will also be a hospitality room on both Friday and Saturday evenings for your enjoyment. More details will be shared as they become available. Thank you for all you do for your communities! The Sky’s the Limit! Exchange Fits! We are Exchange Strong and Exchange Proud! In a few words…..Who are District Directors? Why do we have them? What do they do?A District Director is one of the most important roles in Exchange. These volunteers dedicate countless hours each year making sure clubs are in-formed, active, and growing. Most districts are split into divisions, which have a member from one of the clubs within the division who is elected to serve as district director. The district director serves on the district board to guide, train, and communicate with clubs in their division. These vol-unteers are required to build a relationship with their clubs and have

regular communication throughout the year. The role of a district director is vital to the success of any Exchange club, from the club level up through the district and national levels. The primary duty is leadership training for club officers and directors, specifically preparing them to train as successful committee leaders. Additionally, the district director works with the district’s governing body to ad-minister a membership growth program. Directors develop a strong, supportive relation-ship with each club in the division, communicating often through visits, telephone calls, or email. Each club is to be visited at least four times a year, and more if needed.A district director offers support and encouragement to their clubs and lets them know as-sistance is available. They often act as a coach by helping club officers understand their jobs, as well as answering questions and providing training where needed. Performing special functions for their clubs is something they enjoy doing. They can install club of-ficers, induct new members, and speak to prospective members during club visits.A district director is elected at the state convention by the membership in attendance. To be eligible to become a district director, a member must first serve a term as a club officer. If you think you may be the right person for this role, or if you would like more informa-tion, please contact District President Cindy Cullen, or myself and we would be happy to answer any questions. Stay Exchange Strong!

Warm Regards,Jennifer Sweney

Toledo President Steve Edwards Our Club spearheaded the Toledo-area “11/11@7” Chili Cook-Off fundraiser on Veterans Day to raise money to house homeless veterans. Hosted at Fleetwood’s Armory, the evening was a great success with the Exchange Clubs of Toledo, Clyde, Greater Maumee Bay, Maumee, Perrysburg, and West Toledo joining together in support of Exchange’s national partnership with Veterans Matter. Despite the early season snowstorm, roughly 150 people filled the iconic building adorned in red, white, and blue. Those who attended this fifth-year event helped to raise approximately $10,000! The evening featured 22 pots of unique chili, recognition of veteran representative honoree Lee Armstrong, U.S. Navy Commander Senior Enlisted Advisor (RET), as well as music by Mike Jameson of Jameson’s Mobile Music and Video, an appearance by Muddy The Mud Hen, bidding on exciting auction items, and a 50/50 raffle. Guest judges for the event were Sid Siddall of 107.7 The Wolf; Mike Jameson, who also broadcasts from 106.6 The Ticket; and Cindy Cullen, Ohio-West Virginia D i s t r i c t E x c h a n g e C l u b s P r e s i d e n t . Large event s p o n s o r s included The Blade, Genoa Bank, UAW Local 5242, the Toledo Associat ion o f

Administrative Personnel, and the Exchange Club of Perrysburg. The Exchange Clubs thank all the chili cook-off participants who donated their time and resources to support this important cause. The event, co-chaired by Exchange Club of Toledo members Louise Kachmarik and Shawn Clark, was part of the national partnership between The National Exchange

Division 1Greater Maumee Bay President Ally Mason Our Club’s 29th Annual Golf Scramble was a huge success, thanks to the event chair Bob Bochi and other club members that volunteered before and during the event. This event, along with the Fishing Charter Raffle ticket sales, raises the monies needed to continue to help fund club projects, such as the Youth of the Month/Year, as well as many donations to local agencies. At our September 26 meeting, our speaker was Byron Wynn, Volunteer Coordinator with Catholic Charities. He spoke about their new initiative - The Opportunity Kitchen at Helping Hands of St. Louis. The Opportunity Kitchen is an intense, 80-hour culinary boot camp developed and taught by Chef Saundra Irvine. Students learn culinary techniques and best practices from leaders in the food service industry. Graduates use all they’ve learned to attain sustainable employment, confidence and respect to achieve long-term success. The club participated in the Exchange CARES Backpack project. Thanks to the National Exchange Club provided fifty backpacks to clubs at no charge. The goal of the project is to provide items that will provide comfort or items of necessity to children who have been

d i s p l a c e d from their homes due to neglect or abuse, house fires,

homelessness, or natural disasters. We purchased items such as a small blanket, small stuffed animal, book and necessities like a toothbrush, comb, soap, toothpaste to fill all of the backpacks. B a c k p a c k s were given to two agencies based in the Toledo area: Lucas County Family First Council and B e t h a n y House. We also participated in the Exchange Club of Toledo’s 11/11@7 fundraising event helping to house homeless veterans through National Exchange Club’s partner Veterans Matter. The club raised money by selling hot dogs and cookies during the event, became a Loyal American Sponsor, as well as sponsored a chili

Club and Veterans Matter. All funds raised through the national events will benefit Veterans Matter, which is dedicated to moving homeless veterans into safe, permanent, supportive housing by providing deposits and first month’s rent for veterans entering the HUD-VASH program. Into the fifth year of the organizations’ partnership, Exchange Clubs throughout the country have raised more than $157,000 to benefit the mission of Veterans Matter. Additional activities in the club’s focus include its annual holiday family adoption and preliminary discussions of the annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser.

West ToledoPresident Kelly Cluckey We have been very busy these past few months with multiple events. In August, we had a great time playing putt-putt at our annual picnic and we honored Al Garner at our

meeting to celebrate 58 years of membership. We then purchased school supplies to fill 35 Exchange Cares Bags and donated them to a local school to help the students living in the shelter. For “11/11@7”, we collaborated with Ken

Leslie, Veteran’s Matter and the Exchange Clubs of Toledo, Maumee, Greater Maumee Bay and Perrysburg for the 5th Annual Chili Cook Off and Silent Auction. Despite the 4 inches of unexpected snow, we still had a great turnout while hosting the silent auction. Upcoming,

Clyde President Michael Niell Our Club is happy to announce that our Annual Spaghetti Supper featuring Jeff Lemmon’s secret sauce (Yum Yum!!) and homemade desserts was a resounding success. We were happy to see people from surrounding areas as well as many, many Clyde residents venture out into the cold to enjoy an awesome meal and support our event. VFR and our Division Director, Don Price, traveled all the way from Oregon, Ohio again this year to help support this fundraising effort! In October we inducted three new members into our Club. Derek Liska, Seth Williams and Zach Selvey joined our ranks and jumped right in helping with our portion of Clyde’s Halloween festivities as well as participating in our fundraising efforts selling 50/50 tickets for Clyde High School’s home football games and serving spaghetti. We are all looking forward to celebrating the Holidays at our annual Christmas Party on December 5th. The Toledo Symphony will be performing a Christmas Concert at Clyde High School on December 6th and our club will be helping set the stage for the performance. Then we will be taking a break to concentrate on all of those other duties that arise during the last month of the year. On January 9th we will be honoring Clyde’s Fire Fighter and Police Officer of the Year. Then we will be working hard to get ready for our biennial Surf & Turf Dinner and Auction which is scheduled to take place on April 4th. This will be our biggest event of the year and will raise enough money to fund most of our Community Service efforts for the next two years. Our focus for the majority of this year’s proceeds will be to help feed kids on weekends and throughout the summer. Findlay President John Fetters We recently held our Grocery Raffle and sold tickets for a 90 second shopping spree at a local market. Proceeds benefit our local CASA organization. The winning ticket was purchased by none other than Bob Bochi, our District President Elect. We also held our 2nd Annual “Help House Our Heroes” program to benefit Veterans Matter. Several local auto dealerships donate $10 for each vehicle sold during the month of November. They sold a combined 184 vehicles, which generated $1840. This should help find housing for about three more homeless veterans. Our Christmas Luncheon will be on December 17th, where we will bring donations to Campfire Girls.

Respectfully Submitted by John FettersLima President Michael Mullen Our Club continues to stay busy as we head up to the Christmas holidays and the turn of the calendar to 2020. Our CAP (Child Abuse Prevention) committee has been busy soliciting donations for the annual Christmas Party that we throw for kids in grades K through 4 at Freedom Elementary School in Lima. We stuff a pull-string bag with the Exchange logo on the front with a variety of both useful and fun items. Each child receives a stocking hat and a pair of gloves to help them through the winter along with two pair of socks. Then we add lots of goodies from small toys to candy and snack treats. This year we’re adding bike safety reflectors for each child, courtesy of Lima Memorial Health System. Our party will take place on December 12th, with Santa there to add a few ho-hos to the festivities. October and November also bring our annual sale of KOEZE NUT products through Third Coast Partners in Michigan. This is one of our two major fund raisers for the year and usually nets between four and five thousand dollars. The club will also hold its annual

member luncheon and gift auction on Monday, December 2. Each member brings an unwrapped gift to be auctioned off and all proceeds go to support our club’s general fund. Following the holidays, we’ll be gearing up for our ACE awards and Youth of the Year luncheons in March where we give out approximately $4000.00 in scholarship money to local high school seniors to help toward their college education. And then on Memorial Day, we’ll give out more than 3000 U.S. flags as we form the lead unit in Lima’s Memorial Day Parade for our “Give A Kid A Flag To Wave” project. Seasons greeting to all Exchangites throughout the district.

Springfield President Melissa Tuttle In October our Club was visited by Brian Agler, head coach of the WNBA Dallas Wings who was promoting the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame game held at Wittenberg University between the women of Valparaiso University and The Ohio State University. We welcomed Laura Baxter, the Executive Director of Project Woman, who accepted a Foundation donation of $1,000. Our club earned the National Day of Service patch on the last Saturday in October through our Adopt-A-Highway project as a number of Exchangites made a “clean sweep” of our adopted road. We also earned the National Service Award for the umpteenth time! In November, some club members attended the Region 7 Summit in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. This is such a great learning opportunity and Regional VP Jennifer Sweney planned a great series of topics. The attendees participated in a raffle that garnered over $800 dollars donated to Veterans Matter which enables them to house a Veteran! In November we welcomed Richele Shepard from WellSpring, a group that works with families and at risk children to change lives and attitudes for success. Richele accepted a Foundation donation of $1,000 in furtherance of their good works. Our club will also attend the local Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Kickoff luncheon where they will accept a $750 Foundation donation to assist them with their may important youth projects. Finally in November we will welcome Joe Dawes from Project Jericho-Juvenile Court, with a Foundation donation of $1,000. They use the arts and music to reach at risk youth, creating a path for them to realize their inherent worth and gaining true self esteem. In December, we will honor our local Air and Army National Guardsmen by presenting a donation of $500 each to four service member

Division 4Bowling Green President Matt Karaffa Our Club held a Fall Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on September 28 in the cafeteria of Bowling Green High School. The event raised over $3,000 although attendance was slightly down. Steve Knape and Sean Brennan were in charge of the committee. A new school year of recognizing Exchange Club Students of the Month started in October. Sue Clark will be taking care of the Penta Career Center students and Clif Boutelle oversees the Bowling Green High School choices. Samuel Eiben was honored as the Penta Student for October and Makayla Cales for November. The BGHS Student of the Month for September was Ethan Brown and Asa Lanning for October. We lost one of our long-term members in September, Barbara Keller. As per her wishes, the club donated funds to the Wood County Humane Society in her memory. Barbara had been especially active in our club’s Positive Start Program through the years and had served as the chair. We took a field trip in October to the Wood County Health Department for lunch, a presentation on services, and a tour of the facility. The WCHD has recently added a dental center which is open to the community but will especially provide access to care for families on Medicaid and the uninsured. In September, our club met Chi Ta, a senior Marketing Major from BGSU. She is part of our club partnership with BGSU’s IPP (International Partnerships and Programs). Chi is from Hanoi, Vietnam and will be our guest member during this academic year. She shared her life story with the club

Dover President Kevin Korns It’s Fall and Our Club is busy planning for their Annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Nov 2nd. This was a great event; proceeds from this event funds our Annual Foster Children Christmas program and dinner. We served over 400 spaghetti dinners. We can not possibly have a successful event if it was not for our Community Sponsors, members & their families. We raised over $8,000 with our dinner. On Dec. 3rd, we held our annual Foster Children Christmas dinner. We partner with The Village Network and their foster families. Exchange members will shop for gifts for over 40 children that attend our Christmas Dinner. We invite each family and the Village Network office team to the dinner. At the dinner we have a very special visit from Santa, who passes out the gifts and talk & take pictures with each of the children. This is a very special and moving event. Our members look forward to this dinner every year. We also are starting to plan our Annual Super Bowl Chicken BBQ on Feb. 2nd. This

is always a great event and we partner with our Noah’s Hope Child Advocacy Center of Tuscarawas County. We have supported this group over the past years with the proceeds for their work to prevent child abuse. On Oct 23, Our Club members attended the Grand Opening of Noah’s Hope Child Advocacy Center of Tuscarawas County new location. They have a great looking location to help with how they care for children and their families that are facing difficult situations. Our Club dedicated the Freedom Shrine at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse/ County Building in Oct. Again, this year the club worked with the Dover Fire Fighters to provide smoke detectors for every 2nd grader in the Dover Schools. The club provided all the funds to purchase the smoke detectors. On Nov 30th, Our Club volunteered to support the Salvation Army by being bell ringers for their Annual Red Kettle Christmas Fundraiser. We had a great day giving holiday wishes and thanking our community for their generosity. Our club made donations to many organizations during this time of year. We are proud to support the following organization: Dover Middle School DoCK program - $2,000, Dover/ New Phila Foodbank - $1,000, Dover High School Teen Leadership Corp - $500, Community Hospice - $1,000, Tuscarawas County Council for Church & Community - $500, Dover Youth Soccer Program - $500, Friends of the Homeless Shelter - $1,250

In new business, we had Scott Boone from the Knox County Jobs & Family Services (J. & F. S.) come to us and discuss a possible fund raiser for their organization. It would be a joint fund raiser with their Levy Committee and the Club in August of next year. In return, Knox County J. & F. S. would have members that could help with our planning of a glow run event next year. We are pleased to announce we have three new members in our club. OrrvillePresident Scott Gold Our Club has had a busy quarter. They had a successful Pick 3 Lottery Fundraiser which raises money for our scholarships given each year to high school seniors and to community events. Since 1990, Orrville Exchange has give more than $325,000 in scholarship monies to Orrville graduating seniors. They also continued their “Field of Honor” flags honoring those who have served our country in the armed forces, police and fire departments. This Veteran’s Day 120 flags were placed in Crown Hill Cemetery to the south of the Orrville Fire Station off North Crown Hill Road. The 4th annual Bingo Night will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 at the VFW in Orrville. This also has been a successful fundraiser for our programs. Following a recommendation of Bob Weltlich, a former Orrville graduate and Orrville High School Hall of Fame recipient to honor those who have served our country, are serving and those in the future, Exchange Club met with city officials, VFW and American Legion and purchased a bronze Eagle statue that is placed in front of City Hall. The VFW paid for the plaque and city workers did the construction. The lighted Eagle was dedicated Oct. 17 in front of city hall. In business, our Board approved a donation to Salvation Army for their Backpack Food Program. Sally Criss, who will soon be the new director of Orrville Area United Way, talked Aug. 15 about her personal story of how United Way assisted her years ago. In business, Jim Clymer, vice president, encouraged members to attend the Tri-Club Outing Sept. 10 in lower Orr Park with Rotary, Lions and Exchange club members. Ohio Supreme Court Judge Judi French gave an Update andf Overview of the Ohio Supreme Court on Aug. 29. Our members celebrated its 95th anniversary on Sept. 5 with a cake and a Resolution by National Exchange Club. Orrvile Police Chief Matt Birkbeck, who is also an Exchange club member, enlightened members Sept. 26 on the “New Ohio Hemp Law.’ Birkbeck said on July 29 “out of the blue,” the state sighen a law legalizing hemp in Ohio. “This came out of the blue and as a surprise to most law officers including state patrol officers,” he said. On Oct. 17, members met at the Orrville Public Library for a box lunch and was given

a presentation by Daphne Silchuk-Ashcraft, director of the library, on the library’s renewal and renewal plus to be on the Nov. 5 ballot. West Chester President Kathie Finney Our Club remains busy growing our membership! We inducted two new members at our meeting last evening (11/12) and have three prospectives who are committing soon. We are excited to then begin fundraising and doing more service projects! In the meantime ~ On 10/29 we participated in welcoming home veterans during the Honor Flight at the Cincinnati/N. Kentucky Airport. We partnered with The Exchange Club of NW Cincinnati that evening and it is always an emotional and inspirational time! Members of our club also participated in a program called RASKALS (Random Acts of Simple Kindness Affecting Local Seniors) on November 12. It was a frigid day but we loved giving back to members of the West Chester community who rely on the help of others to get their yards ready for winter! Such a rewarding project! We are brainstorming to find a way to serve other members in our community and hope to come up with something special before the holidays.

EXCHANGITES GATHER IN FT. WAYNE AT REGION 7 EDUCATION SUMMIT Members from Exchange Clubs across Indiana, Michigan and Ohio came together on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Don Hall’s Guesthouse Inn and Convention Center, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to share ideas to help our local clubs grow, and become more vital in our communities. Led by Region 7 RVP Jennifer Sweney, Saginaw, MI, the day was filled with fun and excitement. New friendships were made and old ones were rekindled, as everyone participated and

shared ideas to take back to their local clubs.

After Keynote Speaker Suzanne Greenburg, Executive Director of the Children’s Trust Fund, Michigan, gave a talk on working with the CTF agency in your state, Roundtable Discussions took place on the following subjects: Recruiting for Understrength Clubs (Bonny Clark), Membership Retention (Gil Crabill), Leadership Development (Jeff Young), The Role of the District Director (John Fetters) and The Role of VFR’s (Kathy Cox).

Past National President Tom Karnes, Michigan, updated the group on a new national youth award, The Legacy Award, a $15,000 scholarship for a high school student whose Exchange Club Member parent, or grandparent are, first responders or veterans. The award will be presented at the national convention.

RVP Sweney led a session on Public Relations/Marketing Strategies that had discussions on the importance of a club having a P/R Committee, Websites, Newsletters, Club Brochures. Press Releases and Using Social Media.

Ken Leslie, Veterans Matter, spoke on ways to utilize Veterans Matter projects to build clubs and recruit new members. Thanks to the inspirations of Bonny Clark from Indiana, those members in attendance were able to raise over $800 to help house a homeless veteran. To date, Veterans Matter has helped house over 3200 homeless veterans in 23 states. Ohio alone has helped 767 heroes to date.
