Wishing our Lurnea Community a happy holiday
Lurnea High School Fete in 2020 Lurnea High School wil be hosting a fete at the school Saturday 7th March.
Principal’s Message. At the end of last term we farewelled the graduating class of 2019 with the graduation ceremony here at school followed by the formal at Camden Lakeside. Both events were wonderful celebrations of student achievement to mark the end of 13 years of schooling. Year 12 students have now finished their Higher School Certificate examinations and we hope that their final results reflect their commitment to their studies and their level of preparedness for the exams. Final marks will be available to students on Tuesday 17th December 2019. A number of our students have indicated to us that they have received and accepted early entry offers to university courses. Congratulations to you all and best wishes for future successes. The 2020 senior leadership team has been introduced to the school. Congratulations to Kamryn Serginson, Joleah Taula, Esther Lavilavi, Batul Dennaoui, Angela Nguyen Hope Makaniue, Vitaliano, Moses Awada, Adam Johnsen and Abdo Ahmed. Special congratulations to the 2020 Vice Captains: Temple Tangiora and Whaj Hussain and also the school captains: Raneem Elhalabi and Kevin Kasembe. Additional students from years 7-10 will join the leadership team for their annual conference on the 19th and 20th of this month. The school community can look forward to hearing about the students’ plans for the next school year. I am looking forward to this year’s IEC oratory showcase to be hosted by Bankstown Senior College IEC. If last year’s student efforts are anything to go by I can guarantee that our students, newly arrived to Australia and in the early stages of learning the English language,
will leave the audience in awe of their progress and moved by their stories. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to watch and hear our young people. Thanks to May Jounie for her ability to bring together members of our community at short notice. At our recent community meeting I explained the importance of our students arriving at school on time and we talked about the possibility of altering our starting times. I also shared information about how schools are staffed and invited comments about the current mix of the teaching staff. I also explained how we will be trialling a new curriculum structure for Year 7 2020 before inviting people to visit the learning hub. Thanks also to Annette Ollerton who takes the lead with our community during the Year 6 to Year 7 enrolment process. Annette recently organised for our Year 7, 2020 scholarship winners and their parents to join us for morning tea. It was wonderful to speak with eager young people and their parents who are looking forward to joining us next year. Finally, thanks to a committed team of teachers led by Ms Amy Stoakes, preparations for the school’s 2020 musical are underway. Auditions for main parts have already taken place and rehearsals have begun. Before we know it, the school will gather together to watch our students take to the stage in what I believe will be yet another demonstration of the wonderful talents we have among us. Fun exchange visit in Toda
– gained skills for Year 12
Did you to gain more self-
esteem while in Japan?
When you talk about your
interests and goals to other
students during a Junior
High visit you learn to be
assertive. While walking
through a historic temple,
shrine and shops or in
Tokyo’s sub-cult fashion
district Harajuku, you’ll
learn how amazing
Japanese culture is. At that
time it’s hard to choose
souvenirs for friends and
family but gives you
problem-solving skills.
They’ll be happy that you
thought of them while
away for 9 days.
Congratulation to all our 2020 Scholarship Recipients

Did you become a team
player by commiting to
others?
You’ll have to support each
other to be brave enough
to get into the Fire-truck
crane which goes up above
the 6th floor fire station and
experience an earthquake
simulation. (I had the thrill
of being piggy-backed
down 6 flights of stairs
because of my dislocated
knee!)
Do you want to
understand the Japanese
way?
You will get to try kendou
(bamboo sword sparring),
kyuudou (archery), sushi
making (so fresh and tasty)
and see how students have
to serve each other lunch in
the classroom and then
clean up duties throughout
the whole school, even the
toilets themselves!
Believe us, doing fund-
raising takes effort and
time commitment but once
you’re in Japan, you’re so
proud to have made it
there!
Start saving for the
Liverpool- Toda trip in
2021. Put away $40 a
month from now on and
you’ll be ready!

Dance students from the IEC and High School watched the Sydney Dance Company perform Monday Week 4 November 2019. Students travelled by bus to Circular Quay. Students had lunch by Sydney Harbour then walked to the Roslyn Packer Theatre to view the matinee performance of The Sydney Dance Company. The excursion was free and students really enjoyed the experience. Thank you to Mrs Swadling and Ms Watson.
Make up sessions At the end of term 3, the EAL/D teachers organised a makeup event for students who are interested in makeup and beauty. During this event, the students participated in a live tutorial makeup session that was facilitated by a senior makeup artist from MAC Cosmetics. Through this session, the girls not only learnt about different career pathways in makeup industry such as special effect makeup, but also gained information about skin care routine. At the end of the session, each student received a makeup kit in pursue of embarking on their journey in beauty industry.
