The countdown challenge is organized like many popular game shows, pressing a buzzer when solving a problem. Lincoln Magnet’s Ethan H, got third place, and advanced to the countdown round. The 10 highest scoring participants from the target round compete in a tournament like fashion. The ninth and tenth placing students are given forty-five seconds to solve each problem. Whichever students get two of the three questions right will move on to the eighth highest scoring competitor. This will go on until one student is crowned champion. There is also a group competition, but it is significantly less complicated than the individual round. We are the Betas!Written By Luke HThe National Junior Beta Club is a service organization that focuses on building leaders for the future. They hold a convention in many states every year where students compete in many different categories.. At the 2019 Illinois Junior Beta State Convention on February 25 & 26, 2019, the Lincoln Magnet School Beta Club earned nineteen club awards, the most of any school in Illinois. The members competed in many events in the subject areas of academics, arts, and STEM skills. The convention took place at the Crowne Plaza-Springfield. Over 1200 Beta members were in attendance. Beta members have put a lot of work into each of their projects on weekends and holidays, to get their projects done.

Welcome to READI: Rainbow Education Alliance of Diverse Individuals. READI provides a safe place for people in the LGBTQ+, and questioning community, to be themselves. READI also provides an opportunity for heterosexuals to become better educated and more aware of the LGBTQ+ community. READI isn’t just for LGBTQ+ people, it’s also for students who have been or are being bullied. No one at LMS should be bullied for their sexual preference/orientation, skin color, or the way they dress. The group is also there for you whenever you need it, no matter what you're going through. It is a safe place without judgment. Even though we are all different, we all have something in common: we have READI.

Lincoln Magnet’s jazz band had another outstanding performance playing in accompaniment with our Preview Night speakers. Playing sweet tunes like “Uptown Funk” (Bruno Mars), “Brazil”, and “I’ll Be There” (Jackson 5), which included a riveting saxophone solo by lead saxophonist, Jocelyn S, there wasn’t a dull moment in the short-lived performance. “Oh yes!” Exclaimed Mr. Russell just as they wrapped up the final song. The following days after the concert, reporter Jarvis Thompson interviewed members of the jazz band. It was clear that some performers were not exactly sure about how they had done, and wish they could have done better. However, in the end, regardless of Lincoln Magnet’s performers' opinions, Jazz Band still remained one of the most memorable parts in the eyes of the audience, as some still raved about it while doing the scavenger hunt that followed. “Wow, I didn’t know they could play that well,” chattered one mother to another, continuing to prove that this magnet school still exceeds people’s expectations! ˝Jazz band’s next performance for solo performers will be at Springfield High School on March 8th, while the entire band will perform at the Early Learning Center for Family Night on March 13th. Swing into Spring will be that following Friday, and there shall be an expected appearance for the Harlem Renaissance at the end of April.

It was a great year to be in LMS Art Club. The first project they completed was the Kindness Posters. The group was told to make posters that represented kindness and peace. They completed this by using poster board and scraps from Mr. Mitchell’s room. Art Club students turned them into Lion’s Club to see who would place in the competition. Gracie K won first place in the kindness poster contest, which is moving on. ˝

For the rest of the year, the club worked on projects for the Festival of Trees. They picked the theme of “Holidays Throughout our History.” The first thing they did was make the ornaments. They used old, styled fabric and styrofoam to complete them. The next thing they did was stay after school and paint the base where the tree was to stand. After all the components were complete, they took the tree to the Orr Building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and presented it. The tree won first place and People’s Choice.˝

Art Club has basically concluded for the school year, but Mr. Mitchell is busy with yearbook and other school projects.

We are the Betas! (Continued)One Beta student, Megan B, competed in Portfolio and Songfest. She has completed service hours at many sporting competitions, and has helped the homeless. Recalling her experiences at the state convention she says,, “Hearing all the awards and winning so many competitions was so amazing.” Overall, students at Lincoln Magnet School did a fantastic job at State Convention.

Scouting for GreatnessWritten By Jackson B

One of the local scout troops is Boy Scout Troop 13. On March 23 we participated in the First Aid Rally. Team one got second place, team two got fourth place, and team three got 9th place. The First Aid Rally is where teams of scouts compete using their first aid, they treat “victims,” and learn more about first aid skills, which are real people (volunteers) in makeup and acting. The scouts get judged on how they treat the victims using first aid. Troop 13 holds meetings on Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00. If you are interested in signing up, contact Jackson B.

A Night at the Symphony

Written By Malik GOn Saturday, February 23, 2019, many enjoyed an elegant evening out at the symphony listening to some of classical music’s greatest, romantic hits performed by the Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra. Rising operatic stars from Central Illinois join us for recognizable masterpieces by Bizet, Puccini, Mascagni, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler. Proceeds from this event help support the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphonies. General Admission tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children 12 and under. Tickets may be purchased in person (Hoogland Center for the Arts Box Office), by phone (calling the Box Office), or online.˝What you do here is you play String instruments. String instruments are Cellos, Violas, and Violins. What you do is you play pieces and then you play them at a concert. You can join anytime at the Hoogland Center. Also, the Hoogland center is where you can audition for more than String instruments. ˝

Sports

Students at LMS are involved in many different sports. Although there are extracurricular school teams, there are also competitive teams for many sports. If students want to challenge themselves in a sport, trying out for a competitive team might be a good fit. For example, the Top Notch Gators is a competitive volleyball club in Central Illinois. The Gators are currently in their 2018-2019 season and have a record of 20-0. Megan B and Olivia G are a part of this club and play for the 14U team. Megan, the setter, and Olivia, the middle hitter, have had great success being on this team, but they aren’t the only ones.

Scholastic Bowl is a pretty obscure sport for most people. Scholastic Bowl is essentially a more competitive team-based Jeopardy game. There are two teams that have at most five players in at one time. Each game/half starts with a toss-up question. A toss-up question is a question where the moderator reads from a specific prompt giving various clues to the answer. The objective is to buzz your buzzer before the other team can and answer the prompt question correctly. Then, if a team can answer correctly, they are awarded ten points and have priorities when it comes to the bonus questions. If a team gets a toss up wrong they can no longer buzz in until the next toss-up. Bonus questions are when the moderator reads a general prompt about the incoming four questions. They then read a single clue about one thing four separate times as the players write down what they know/think they know. They then pass it to the captain that is in the middle of them before time runs out or the captain of the team that won the toss-up question calls time. When a captain calls time they practically end the timer and time of writing down answers and conferring with other teammates. Then once time runs out or a captain calls time, the captain is able to call time answers all four questions as best as possible with one answer. For every bonus question guessed correctly, the according team is awarded five points. Then, once the team that answered the toss up correctly is done guessing the other team can answer the remaining questions.

In the ice cold Nelson Center, the ice show that has been running for 44 years, Spotlight on Ice is underway! The show this year, is called “Ice Fantasies.” Many practices and much work has been put into the props, costumes, and the show in general. The show will feature some new and classic films reenacted on ice.

Spotlight on Ice Written By Annabel K

At Lincoln Magnet School, track and field is always a favorite, from the strong shot put and discus throwers to the cheetah fast runners, track and field never seems to fail. The eighth graders are eager to show what they got one last time, and the sixth graders are anxious to make their mark. Head coach, Jeff Lynn, is always excited for new kids. One of the eighth graders at Lincoln, Alexander Boucher, has been training since August for this highly anticipated season. Boucher states that, “We have a lot of runners this year so I don’t know how the newcomers will react, but I know our four by two team will be somewhat godlike.” Practice started March 5th, and the first meet is April 5th. One thing is for sure, this season, you better go hard or go home!˝ Continued on Next Page

The Springfield Racquet Club has a group of students from their tennis program who form a competitive tennis club. Megan Becker is one of the many athletes who play tennis at the Racquet Club and is a part of the organization. Megan’s father has played tennis since he was a child and he still does today! John Becker says, “Tennis helped me develop personal relationships with people of different ages and occupations. Also, it helps to maintain physical fitness and personal health.” Tennis is a great way to stay active even when you are an adult. Megan competes once a month for the Springfield Racquet Club against other clubs. These other clubs include Quincy, Bloomington, Decatur, and Peoria. Introducing tennis to children early helps them get more involved in the sport, which could then turn into a passion. Being a part of a tennis team can help the athlete fulfill their dreams of becoming a good player.

Ice Fantasies features the Springfield Figure Skating Club’s performances of “Fantasy under

the Big Top,” (The Greatest Showman), “The Snow

Queen,” (Frozen), “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Young Frankenstein.”

As a long time skater, my favorite part in the show is playing the

snake charmer in “Fantasy under the Big Top.” Some of the best

parts about being in the show are being with your friends and being able to show off your talent in a way that's fun and exciting. The

show also features a “guest skater” who is often a very nice

and talented skater. The guest skater for this show is Camden Pulkinen, an American figure skater who currently holds a world

record for the PCS (program component score) in junior men. He is 2017’s silver medalist in the Junior Grand Prix Final and has finished in the top six at the World Junior Championships in 2018. Tickets to this show and info about performances can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/spotlight-on-ice-2019-tickets-53318076803.

This show will no doubt be one of the grandest and awe-inspiring shows that you will see!

Top Notch to the Top (Continued)

Top Notch recruits girls from Springfield and other neighboring cities to create the best volleyball teams for all ages. Megan and Olivia have learned many different leadership skills that they need to become successful in life. Megan B said, “With volleyball, my leadership skills have improved and my confidence has risen.” Volleyball has also helped them become better players. The competition between the different clubs is exciting and enjoyable to watch. There are tough teams, but the Gators have found a way to pull through. In addition, all of the players’ parents are there to help cheer them on. Top Notch Volleyball Club is taking the next step when it comes to developing future volleyball players.

Cross Country is not simply about the race. It combines factors before the race, as well. Cross Country is a team sport that requires incredible efforts from a group of runners who are bound by hard work. We had 31 runners for the cross country team (14 girls and 17 boys.) The cross country team had four 8th grade standout competitors: Cooper Burk, Griffin Burk, Dewann Miller, and Maddie Kim. Two of the four were state competitors: Maddie Kim and Dewann Miller. Maddie Kim won first in the city track meet putting Lincoln on notice and showing other schools her dominance. Hopefully, these successful seasons will carry on with all of the runners in high school.˝

The Lincoln Leopards Baseball team had high expectations this year. The boys were lead by returning 8th graders Cooper Burk, the speed demon, Griffin Burk, the ace pitcher, and Ryne Crum, the slugger. The Leopards were coached by Brady Burk. The season was slim, and the boys only played 16 games. Games against teams who were more talented, like Christ the King and Franklin Middle School, were canceled due to rain. “I believe that those canceled games ultimately hurt us. Facing teams that we blow out 15-0 doesn’t better us. The team was so excited to play CTK, and when we learned that it was canceled, it really just bummed us out.” said Cooper Burk when asked about the canceled games. “It just stinks we couldn’t face any competition until the regional finals.” ˝

The team finished the regular season 13-1, with a loss to East Peoria. “East Peoria didn’t do anything special. We just didn’t hit as a team, and we just didn’t play together as a team. It didn’t help that Cooper was injured too, because he’s usually a run or two.” Griffin Burk noted on the 2-1 loss to East Peoria. ˝

Regionals came fast for the Leopards. With their 13-1 record, they managed to capture the one seed in regionals. After blowing by Lincoln 15-0, the Leopards were matched against the Williamsville Bee Bees. Williamsville knocked them out of regionals the previous year. Lead by Kaden Griffith, a long time friend and teammate of Cooper and Griffin Burk, the Bee Bees beat Lincoln Magnet 6-3. I interviewed Ryne Crum, and asked him questions of this season, and what he believed the future holds for him. When I asked Ryne Crum about his team’s season, he said “We needed a third baseman and unfortunately, we didn’t have one since Griffin was either pitching or catching. We knew we needed the bottom of the lineup to step up and find a way to get on base for the guys in the top, but Kaden didn’t allow that to happen. Griffin couldn’t find the strike zone either. It was just a really rough game for us.” Crum isn’t dwelling on the past, however. “Looking forward to Springfield High, I think our class looks good. We will develop together as a team, and I hope we can become state bound. I’ve played with almost every single kid in the 2023 class. I looking forward to it.”˝

Hop into the Ring!

On a cold winters day, you can walk past a tan building by Lanphier and hear music and the loud thud of jump ropes hitting the ground. If you walk through the door, you can see about 5 sweaty hard working boxers jumping rope as fast as they can. The gym that these kids are part of is the Springfield Cobra’s Youth Boxing Club. Boxing is more than just something to do for these kids. Boxing is these kids live; it determines how they eat, what they do outside of the gym, and makes them work hard and be healthy. Some of these kids in the gym are Jesse(15), Evan(15), Sidney(17), and Zach(19). Boxing has shaped them in so many ways. Sidney and Zach are both trained and are the top fighters in the gym, but they did not just wake up and become the top fighters in the gym. They had to prove themselves to the coach whose name is Justin Moon. The changes that they had to make are train in and outside the gym, change their diet and be coachable. Evan, Sidney, and Zach are going to be fighting at the Golden Gloves tournament in St Louis in the month of March. The kids that are part of the club met at 1615 E. North Grand Ave. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 7 to 8:45. If you would like to know more about the Boxing club call Justin Moon at the number (217) 416-6185.˝

The 8th Grade Lincoln Leopards Boys Basketball team, led by Coach Robinson and Coach Davis, had an outstanding year this season! They had a record of 17-4 and went on to participate in the Regional Championship in the Class 4A division, ultimately losing to Springfield Grant Middle School. Seth D seemed to be one of the outbreaking players of the season, leading the team in total rebounds, and really showing those high school coaches what they are looking for. “We did [well], but can always do better. I feel we came together as a team, as well as brothers when it came down to the final minutes. Some of the late-season injuries held us back, including the loss of Cooper B with a sprained wrist during regionals”, said Seth of the Lincoln Leopards.

Volleyball. Volleyball may be a game to you, and volleyball may just be a game to me, but it is a lot more than a game to the wonderful lady leopards of Lincoln Magnet School. To the ladies of LMS, volleyball is a game of stamina, expertise in the position you are most comfortable with, and good old fashioned team cooperation. Although, something that is proven to be much more valuable than anything else, is a can-do attitude. If you don’t have a good or enthusiastic attitude, then you won’t make it far in the volleyball world. And the lady leopards pretty confidently agree.˝

Speaking of a can-do attitude, no one will disagree when it is said that the most enthusiastic, energetic, and all around good person is the one...and only...Megan Becker. Megan is the definition of happy. So much so, most people have never even seen her with a frown on her face, let alone a straight face. If you googled the happiest person alive you would find a picture of her. But let's not let Megan's attitude fool you. If you're going against her in a volleyball game you better watch out, because behind that pretty smile is a beast that you DO NOT want to mess with. She has worked so hard and has put much time and dedication into her volleyball career. Megan is also one of many model volleyball players we have at this school, and you would do good by talking to her and maybe... just maybe... learning something of use.˝

In other news, on March 2, 2019, our eighth-grade lady leopards volleyball team woke up bright and early to catch the 8:00 long bus ride to Quincy. The girls arrived at around 11:00 AM to start warming up for an 11:30 game. Our girls swept everyone off their feet beating Jefferson a lot to a little in two sets. After that game, they had to play Franklin. They put up a good fight in the first game but came up short 25-22 in favor of Franklin. Our girls after playing the first game warmed up a little bit and learned Franklins playing style, after that, they put up another good fight and came out on top 25-21. Both teams fought really hard but in the end, Franklin won the whole game.˝

The Civil Air Patrol

If you go to the Capital Airport on Wednesday nights, you may hear someone yelling from the

Air National Guard base. The voices you hear are coming from cadets that are in Civil Air

Patrol. Civil Air Patrol is focused on Aerospace, Search and Reseach, leadership, and teaches

kids what the military is like. Some people going to Civil Air Patrol are there for more than just

learning about the military. An example is Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Katlyn Orr. She says, “ I joined

because I wanted to get better in my confidence and speaking in front of people.” The person in

charge of this Squadron is an adult named Maj. Nina Rossini, and the person that is in charge

of the cadets is Cadet Captain Jack Whitlock. The cadets meet every Wednesday at the Air

National Gaurd Base in Springfield from 6:30 to 9 pm. At these meetings, cadets learn about

aerospace, drill, leadership, physical training, emergency services, and many more skills. If you

would like to know more please email Maj. Nina Rossini at [email protected]. ˝

Student Spotlight

8th Grade SpotlightWritten By Alex B

At Lincoln Magnet School Megan Becker is the model student for sixth and seventh graders to look up too. Megan is not only an exceptional student but is also an exceptional athlete playing sports like volleyball tennis and track & field. Throughout all of it, she still keeps her straight A’s in check. She is a very fun, energetic person who is always trying to help others in need. Along with helping others, she is a very kind and sweet person who you will never in your life see without a smile. Every single person would do well to learn from Megan, for she is the future of this world and what we all should expect in a person in the years to come. Megan has been honored with many Student of the Year awards, as well as being a fantastic student leader.˝

Luke Hockenyos is the next student spotlight, for there is no other guy who should be featured before the Beta president. Luke is a very hard worker and he has participated in many Beta hours getting our school ready for the Beta convention. Along with the super long list of responsibilities and duties Luke has to participate in as president, he still has time to maintain straight A’s as well. If you would like to become Beta president or join Beta, in general, you should go talk to Luke while he is free. In many people's opinions, Luke might be one of the best presidents this school has had. He has also been honored with multiple Student of the Year awards, as well as being a student leader.

7th Grade Spotlight

“How do we tackle plastic?” Is a question that environmentalists have been asking for many years. Luckily, this year's National Geographic Challenge was just that. Students in grades 5-8 were challenged to think, act, and impact to discover a real-world solution to plastic pollution in Earth’s waterways. This year, sixth-grade students at LMS were given this challenge for their CBL (challenge based learning) project. By using research, collaboration, and creativity skills, students developed a project and solution for this problem. The project included map making, model building, and video production. Students worked in small teams to present and make all of these components fit together. I interviewed two sixth grade students whose projects are advancing in the challenge to grasp an understanding of their opinions on their CBL project. When asked what her favorite portion of the project was, Evie Monahan said that creating the iMovie was her favorite part. As for Lucas Killen, he said that presenting was what he enjoyed most. Evie and Lucas’ group looked at websites, watched videos, and even went to Walmart to complete their research. It was all part of their solution to ditch plastic shopping bags for reusable tee shirt bags. They both agreed that working together and collaboration was what made the project fun. Overall, this year's Nat Geo Challenge was a great way to tie learning with problem-solving and teamwork with school work. This is just one step in tackling plastic pollution and creating a cleaner, more sustainable planet.

Madelyn Beck is an outstanding 7th-grade student here at LMS. Not only does Madelyn do exceptionally well academically, but she is involved with many extracurricular activities. LMS’ basketball and volleyball teams, both of which she is a part of, advanced to the regional championships. She says she is very proud of this. Along with sports, one of her favorite activities this year was participating in the Beta convention. She was a part of Spotlight Your Service and Banner, both of which got first place at Beta convention this year. John Eichinger is another phenomenal 7th-grade student at LMS. He too is involved with lots of other extracurricular activities. Scholastic Bowl and cross country are just two of the activities he is involved in. He says that they make him feel more involved and help him learn about new things. When he is not doing homework or studying for tests, John is reading and hanging out with friends and family. John also loves music and is in the LMS 7th/8th grade band as well as the jazz band. He plays trombone and piano. His favorite school project this year was working on the Robotics project for Beta convention. His favorite thing about LMS is the computers. “I think it is a great way to learn and to show our learning,” John says through email. ˝

As far as trends have gone this year, there have been many to be recognized. A huge trend that has been going on for a while is the Hydro Flasks. A Hydro Flask is a container that can keep a liquid hot or cold for a long period of time. The price is based on the size, the highest price being $59.95, and the lowest being $29.95 for a single flask. They come in many colors, sizes, and uses. The most preferred size by the people is the 32oz with a straw attached. Whether your Hydro Flask is flamingo, blueberry, icy, lava, or cobalt, it’s a very iconic trend that is going around. Another very popular trend is scrunchies you will see many girls around school with scrunchies on their wrist as well as in their hair. The Scrunchie trend was originated in the ‘80s and ‘90s and has recently returned, There is a wide variety of scrunchies to choose from, however, many come in 3, 5, or even 26 packs. Scrunchies are a cute little accessory which can spice up your outfit without you trying too hard.

Billboard Top 15

Recently, tons of trends have become popular, one of the popular trends are Mom Jeans ( weird name I know right!) these high waisted jeans were initially “fashionable” in the late 1980s and early 2000s. Middle-aged mothers mostly wore these. The jeans were deemed unfashionable by younger popular girls. But the “unfashionable” jeans have recently made a comeback the younger people are revisiting the ‘80s and ‘90s era. You can style mom jeans in many different ways you can tuck a long sleeve shirt into the comfy jeans in the winter/ spring. And in the summer you can wear a tube top or even a seamless cropped cami with them. Speaking of iconic trends, since it is still winter, people absolutely love their boots! Boots can be worn at any time of the year, but we are talking about fuzzy boots such as Uggs and Bearpaw. They are very convenient, when you do not want to wear tennis shoes, you can just slide on some boots and be much more comfortable, and stylish at the same time! As you walk around school you don’t really notice people’s shoes, but if you did, you would see lots of boots on people. Another really convenient slide on shoe, is Birkenstock sandals. You are probably thinking, well why would people wear sandals in the winter? Most people wear them with long or fuzzy socks, making a huge fashion statement. This is definitely not the most stylish trend, but it is certainly one of the most comfortable.
