SAINT JOSEPH Of all the men in the world throughout history, a simple village carpenter

named Joseph was the one chosen to help raise the child Jesus to adulthood.

Into his faithful, loving care was entrusted the childhood and youth of the

Redeemer of the world. After the Mother of God herself, no one has ever

been declared the patron saint of all working people, of craftsmen and of the

poor. He is the divinely appointed head of the Holy Family. The Holy Family of

Saint Joseph, the Blessed Mother and the Son of God are the beginning and

the model for the great Family of God. In this way, Saint Joseph is father to

all of us.

PRAYERS FOR FATHERS

God, bless all the fathers in the world. Guide them to be good role models and loving to all their children. Help them

to be a father like You are. Give them grace and patience to handle situations in a loving way. Amen

This year, in honour of our St. Paul parent volunteers, we are making a donation to the Toronto Sick Kids Hospital.

This donation will be made with a special intention to a former St. Paul student, Danielle Mathia. This past fall,

after a long wait Danielle received a double lung transplant. The future seemed a little brighter for her, all went

well and she was looking forward to everything all teenagers look forward to. However, recently Danielle has been

diagnosed with cancer. Spots were found on her lungs and on the surface of her brain. Danielle and her family are

still fighting the fight. She is currently at Sick Kids in Toronto. All of our volunteer names will be provided to Sick

Kids with the donation. They include: Jennifer Arneill, Cheri Bennett, Angi Billing, Tanya Boock, Julie Borghese,

GRADE EIGHT GRADUATION 2014 On the evening of Friday, June 20, the boys and girls in our grade eight classes will

officially graduate from elementary school. A special evening is planned for our

graduates, their parents, family and friends. This occasion will provide us with an

opportunity to formally congratulate these young people on their many accomplishments

and to thank them for their many contributions to school life at St. Paul Catholic

School. Our Graduation Program is as follows: Liturgy, Valedictory Address, and

Diplomas at St. Paul Catholic School at 5:30 p.m. Graduates and their invited guests

will then proceed to dinner and the awards presentation at the Italian Canadian Club.

The grads will then remain for their dance.

Provincial Election Day is Thursday, June 12, 2014 The election for Ontario’s 41st Parliament will take place on Thursday, June 12. During elections it is quite common

for schools to be used as Polling Stations, meaning large numbers of people from all age groups will be converging on

school properties on voting day. St. Paul Catholic School will be open to

the community as a polling station.

STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON – MONDAY, JUNE 9, 2014

Hello St Paul's Parents,

It's that time of year again when we hold a luncheon to celebrate our teachers and staff. It's a way to say 'thank-

you' for another great school year. We are having a potluck style luncheon on Monday, June 9th and we need your

culinary help to make it a success. We are looking for any dishes that you could drop off, be it salads, main dishes,

or desserts. We also need donations of dishes, cutlery, and drinks. You can either send it in with your children or

we will have runners out front that morning so you can just drop your dish off and go. We will also need volunteers

to do yard duty during the lunch hour so that the staff can enjoy an uninterrupted meal.

Please reply by email if you're able to bring or send something so that we have a good assortment of dishes. Please

reply to Shelley Gill at [email protected]. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

MAY – STUDENT OF THE MONTH – COURAGE

May-Courage- We do the right thing, even when it’s difficult.

Throughout the month of May, these students have demonstrated Courage. With courage you will dare to take

risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity.

Their courage is a benefit to our school community. We congratulate you and thank you for making St. Paul

Catholic School a better place.

CLASS STRUCTURE

Planning is now underway to determine class structures and class enrolments for next September. This is a long

and involved process that must consider different factors and input from a variety of sources. Because of ministry

class size restrictions and grant structures, schools have little or no control over class structures. To help create

smaller class sizes schools now have a greater number of split grade classrooms. Fewer students in a classroom

enable our teachers to use grouping strategies more effectively and work with students in different grades so that

all students are instructed at the appropriate level. Some of the factors that are given consideration when

determining class enrollment includes:

Teacher recommendations

SERT recommendations

Number of boys and girls in a class

Number of A’s, B’s, C’s and D’s in a class

Special needs students in each class (EA availability)

Last year’s class and room

Learning styles and social skills

Behavioural considerations

SHARKS4KIDS WCDSB TOUR

The Wellington Catholic District School Board is excited to welcome the team from Sharks4Kids to our school

board the week of June 9th. They will be travelling from the Bahamas and visiting our elementary and high schools

to put on interactive presentations about sharks and ocean conservation. Jillian Morris and her two teammates are

marine biologists who have spent thousands of hours in the water with sharks. Jillian and her husband Duncan

Brake have conducted research with the Bimini Shark Lab and filmed documentaries around the world for the likes

of Discovery, National Geographic, Animal Planet and the BBC. Dr. Derek Burkeholder is currently working in

Florida at the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University, tagging and tracking sharks to

learn their migration patterns and determine what areas of the oceans need to be protected the most. Where

possible we will be dividing schools by divisions for more intimate presentations from our distinguished guests. The

date for (insert school name) is (insert date). These presentations will cover multiple science curriculum

expectations, particularly human impact on the environment, characteristics of a healthy ecosystem and what we

can do to protect and respect the environment. Special thanks to our sponsors: Holiday Inn (Stone Road),

TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

What do you get when you cross a Ministry of Education initiative with a caring, faith-

based school community? No, it’s not the opening line of a bad joke. It’s a serious

question. With a truly heartening answer.

The Ministry of Education has asked every school board in Ontario to assess its

strengths and needs, then develop an integrated plan to support student mental health

in their schools. It is part of a larger three-year plan to improve mental health

services for children and youth across the Ontario. You can read the Provincial plan,

called “Open Minds, Healthy Minds,” at (http://www.health.gov.on.ca).

Since September, Wellington Catholic has been involved in the development of its

Mental Health & Wellness Strategy. We conducted interviews with all school

leadership teams, school council representatives, and stakeholder groups in the board. We invited input from all

staff via an online survey. We met with the community agencies that support our students who have intense social,

emotional, and mental health needs. We reviewed all the relevant protocols and procedures. We asked what we are

doing well and what we could do better. The complete WCDSB Mental Health & Wellness Strategy will be available

through a link on the Board website this Fall. But it is my pleasure to be able to share highlights of the action plan

that came out of the larger strategy. This is our three year plan.

We already knew that our greatest strength is in the caring, compassionate, and dedicated staff. It was the

number one strength cited by over 80% of all respondents throughout the Board and in the community. But there

were also areas for improvement: When asked what people felt the strategy should focus on, the top

recommendation was increasing educator knowledge about student social, emotional, behavioural, and mental health

challenges, and how to support children with different social and emotional needs.

In the fall of 2014 we will begin creating a two-year coordinated plan for increasing mental health knowledge and

awareness for school staff, students, and parents. However, in addition to knowledge about mental illness, we want

to focus on building good mental health. We want to teach emotional awareness and social problem-solving at an

early age, develop good coping skills and stress-management, and teach self-awareness and regulation. These are

key strengths that all children and youth need to achieve optimal mental health and well-being. But we hope to go

one step further and include teacher well-being in education about mental health because, as any teacher or parent

knows, if you do not care for and have compassion for yourself, it is very difficult to foster the same skills in

children. We teach by example, so the first priority of our plan is educating ourselves.

Our second priority is to invest in primary prevention, because it has been proven effective to increase student

well-being for all, improve problem-solving and self-regulation in younger children, reduce disruptive behavior in

classrooms, and even improve academic achievement. Half our schools already have very strong primary prevention

programming, such as Tools for Life. Our goal is to ensure all schools have at least begun introducing it and training

staff by June, 2015.

With increased knowledge comes increased ability to detect concerns. By 2015-2016 we will have early screening

tools in place for parents and teachers to use to more quickly and specifically identify emerging concerns, because

early intervention leads to better outcomes. We will continue to work with our community agencies as they

streamline their processes for providing families and students with the help they need, when they need it. We

know that it can be a long and frustrating path to care; we are partners in that journey and will work to make it

easier.

Our third priority is providing effective in-school support to those students who need it. We already have a strong

support team within the Board (youth workers, social worker, special education teachers, educational assistants,

etc.). These people work as part of school teams, consulting, working individually with students, and support

teachers and families. But we heard the message that the number of children with high needs is increasing, so we

must ensure we are using their skills most effectively to reach as many people as possible. Starting in Fall 2014, we

will work directly with our support staff to look closely at their roles, how they provide services, and where we

could do better. We want all schools to have access to help assessing student needs and planning targeted,

“Good mental health – resilience, coping, and well-being –is not the domain of hospitals or clinics, but is the domain of caring, compassionate communities.”

Page 7: The Lightning - Wellington Catholic Lightning St. Paul Catholic ... Saint Joseph, the Blessed Mother and the Son of God are the beginning and ... Margaret Mishra, Sorab Mishra, Tiffany

effective in-school interventions. We want to ensure that those students who are most challenged have access to

specialized support in school. And we must ensure that all services provided are proven effective.

There are other goals in the larger plan, such as creating a database of information and resources about mental

health, mental illness, building resilience and social emotional competence, as well as parenting and educational

resources for Wellington Catholic families, students, and staff (that’s in progress at this time). Another is to

create a consultation team to help schools assess needs and program support for higher-needs students (that’s

hoped for in 2016-2017). And of course, we have plans for evaluating the effectiveness of our efforts as we

progress through the steps of our plan. We should begin to have evidence of how the different priorities are

working by June, 2017.

But back to the original question: What do you get when you cross a Ministry of Education initiative with a caring,

faith-based educational system? You get a plan that doesn’t focus on illness alone, but one that sees the strength

and the potential of every individual, regardless of the type of challenge, level of ability, or need. It focuses on

individuals, rather than diagnoses.

You get a plan that is inclusive, recognizing that every one of us at some time in our life struggles with the

continuum of health, wellness, and suffering. And that those with severe struggles are no different than anyone

else in their right to be active participants in their lives and in their communities of learning and faith.

You get a plan that recognizes that good mental health – resilience, coping, and well-being –is not the domain of

hospitals or clinics, but is the domain of caring, compassionate communities, the domain of the Wellington Catholic

school community.

I know it is an ambitious plan. But if we proceed slowly, with care, and with continuous feedback from you (yes, you)

along the way, I am confident we can realize Wellington Catholic’s vision of schools as mentally healthy, Christ-like

communities, based upon compassion, caring, and inclusion. It is what every single one of us needs to thrive,

emotionally, academically, spiritually, physically, socially, and in all the ways that provides meaning to our lives.

Why would we aspire to anything else?

Dr. Brenda Kenyon is a clinical Psychologist with over 20 years’ experience providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health problems in children, adolescents, and adults. She is the Mental Health Lead for Wellington Catholic District School Board.

SCIENTISTS IN SCHOOL ARE AWESOME!

Students in Mrs. Furfaro's grade 1/2 class learned a ton

about Chemistry in May through the awesome Scientists

in Schools program. This opportunity is made possible

through the generous support of our Parent Council

which sees our students benefit from being engaged in

these hands-on lessons.

GARAGE SALE SUPER!

Thanks to all the parents on Parent Council who facilitated our

first ever Community Garage Sale on Saturday, May 31st. It was

a great way for families to connect and for new friends to see

our great school. Most importantly, it was a great way to purge

some household items that others might find need for.

Magic106.1 was on hand to support as well and gets the word out.

Ultimately, it was a super way to raise a few funds for our school

and have some fun at the same time. Thanks to Mrs. Vickers for

her great leadership on this project and for building community!

IGNITING THE LIGHT!

Students and staff at St. Paul all

received a special gift for their spirit

all year with an IGNITE THE LIGHT

bracelet on May 30th. Thanks to Parent

Council for supporting this cause and it

was also their way to remind as many

students to make it out to Family Fun

Night on June 3rd.

GREAT AMBASSADORS!

Despite the not so memorable win-loss records, we are so proud of

our Girls Baseball team who should have won an award for the best

spirited and optimistic team at the recent Wellington Catholic

Schools Baseball Tournament held at Bishop Mac. We are so proud

of how you conducted yourselves ladies and how you competed

without giving up! Thanks to our all-star coaches Ms. Fletcher, Ms.

Mason and Ms. Funkenhauser!

DYNAMITE TEAM EFFORT!

Our boy’s baseball team also had a great showing at the recent

Wellington Catholic tournament. Many parents and staff

commented on how our boys kept battling with a good attitude

right up to the final inning of play, despite the score not going

their way all day. Sometimes you lose the game, but you win and

gain the respect of so many by your efforts, attitude and

perseverance! Way to represent us with great class Lightning!

A huge thanks goes out to Mr. Beaudoin for being the best coach

and for all the time you give to our school and students!

SIGNS OF GRACE AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS

We congratulate Damon and Lucas for their stellar

participation and school spirit at the recent Special

Olympics Track and Field meet held at St. James on

May 29. There were over 500 athletes from both the

Public and Catholic School systems in both elementary

and secondary. We really want to extend our

heartfelt thanks to our awesome peer coaches who

displayed great courage as leaders - way to go Grace,

Sarah and Jake! Thanks also to our staff team who

always believe in the gifts and talents of all young

people - Ms. Britton-Fraser, Ms. Douglas, Ms.

Zonneveld, and Ms. D'Souza - you all represented St.

Paul with such dignity, spirit and class!

Please return any borrowed St. Paul t-shirts and team uniforms before the end of June. We

are missing several team uniforms and ask that parents assist in locating tops or shorts that

are in with their child's belongings.

HELP PLANT “ROOTS OF EMPATHY” AT ST. PAUL

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown

significant effect in reducing levels of aggression among school children while

raising social/emotional competence, pro-social behaviour and increasing

empathy. We are looking to implement the program at St. Paul for the 2014-

2015 school year with a goal to help build respectful and caring relationships

as part of our Kindness Matters and Anti-bullying initiatives.

Required at the heart of the program, is a neighbourhood infant and parent

who visit the classroom 9 times over the school year. If you are interested

in the capacity, please call the school at 519.824.9470. In addition, a trained Roots of Empathy Instructor

coaches the students in experiential learning and interactions with the baby

to help children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings

of others. We are also looking for a volunteer to work with our Youth

Worker, Ms. Laura Sotirelis, to be trained for three days in August and help

facilitate the program by conducting 27 visits over the course of the school

year. If you are interested in the capacity, please call the school at

519.824.9470.

We have two teachers who are committed to supporting this program by

integrating the program into their classroom studies. It serves as a great

way to teaching writing and art skills while facilitating excellent family life

conversations.

For more information, please call Mr. Della Croce at the school or visit

www.rootsofempathy.org.

N.E.D. MESSAGE A GOOD ONE!

We recently held a positive behavior assembly to end the month of May.

In the assembly, we honoured our Character-of-the-Month recipients

for May, honouring the trait COURAGE. We were also able to salute our

amazing athletes, specifically our Track and Field, Boys and Girls

Baseball and Special Olympic Teams. They did so amazing well in

demonstrating school spirit, perseverance and ambassadorship. Our

gathering ended with The NED Show® - seen

by more than 2.3 million children every year.

The mission was to motivate and encourage students to become champions at school and

in life. This was done by sharing the message of NED®, whose name is also an acronym:

Never Give Up, Encourage Others, Do Your Best®. Please visit us: www.thenedshow.com"

BICYCLE RODEO CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to Ben Satrupinas and Kiera Simpson who

displayed amazing ability, dexterity and patience in our

recent school Bicycle Rodeo. Our champions will move onto

the City of Guelph Bicycle Rodeo Championship on Thursday,

June 19th at 12:30pm at Victoria Road Recreation Center.

Johnny Beaton placed 2nd, and Peter George in 3rd for boys.

FOCUS ON NATURE SUMMER CAMPS

July 21-25 and August 11-15 at Guelph's Arboretum

Do you know someone aged 8 to 16, who might enjoy a week of exploring the natural beauty of Guelph's Arboretum

with their camera? Focus on Nature has two one-week camps planned for this summer, July 21-25 and August 11-

15, based at the Arboretum's Taylor Nature Centre. It will be a great opportunity to learn photography skills

while spending time outdoors exploring all that the Arboretum has to offer. A naturalist from the Arboretum will

join us each day to deepen our understanding of nature and there will be lots of time for other fun activities as

well. The fee for the week is $250 and the camps are limited to 16 young nature photographers each. To register a

participant with their name and age and which week you'd like to register for and to learn more about their summer

camps, visit web site www.focusonnature.ca.

Parish/School Mass

Please mark Saturday, June 4th, on your

calendars. This date has been chosen

by the parish for our parish/school

mass. Our St. Paul choir will lead the

singing and our students, staff and

parents will be assigned a variety of

other roles for the mass. We hope to

have a large number of St. Paul families

attending the mass and to make this

mass an annual celebration for our

community. The mass starts at 5:15

p.m. at the Church of Our Lady.
