The Lighthouse - Bulletin of The Rotary Club of Madras • April 11, 20173

In communities worldwide, Rotarians are finding creative ways to celebrate The Rotary Foundation centennial and showcase our Foundation’s century-long commitment to doing good in the world.

Rotarians have arranged for a commemorative postage stamp to be issued in Pakistan, sponsored a cruise on the Danube River with some proceeds going to our Foundation, and sold bottles of wine with “100 Years Doing Good in the World” printed on the label in Vancouver, B.C.

And, of course, there have been scores of centennial dinners. In Arch Klumph’s hometown of Cleveland, Rotarians gathered to celebrate the centennial and honor the father of The Rotary Foundation with a banquet and concert by the Cleveland Orchestra. In addition to raising more than $2.1 million for our Foundation, the event paid tribute to Klumph’s virtuosity as a flutist.

Some Rotarians are honoring the Foundation by sponsoring global grant projects. They are fighting dengue fever in Indonesia, providing sanitation facilities in Colombia, and promoting early detection of breast cancer in Turkey.

Rotaractors and Interactors have answered the call to perform 100 acts of good this year in honor of the centennial. They are donating blood, visiting the elderly, and volunteering at food pantries, to name just a few of the activities this challenge has inspired.

By celebrating this milestone, we are sharing our success stories with the world. In 2016, cable news channel CNBC named The Rotary Foundation one of the “Top 10 Charities Changing the World,” citing our PolioPlus program as well as our financial health, accountability, and transparency of reporting. In addition, the Association of Fundraising Professionals named The Rotary Foundation the World’s Outstanding Foundation for 2016.

Our centennial year is not over yet. You still have time to plan a special event, make a centennial contribution, and add more acts of good. In June, I hope you will join me for the biggest centennial celebration of the year at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta.

Harris was born in Wisconsin to George and Cornilia Harris. He was the couple’s second child. At age 3, when his family fell on hard times, Paul was moved with a sibling to Vermont to live with his paternal grandparents, Howard and Pamela Harris. Harris would later write about his parents: “Of all charges which might have been made against George and Cornelia, parsimony would have stood the least chance. They were both royal spenders.”

While living in Vermont, he attended the famous Black River Academy in Ludlow, but was expelled after only a short time. At his secondary school in Rutland, he was known as a prankster. After secondary school, he attended the University of Vermont. In 1886, he was expelled in an incident involving a secret society. In the fall of 1887, he attended Princeton University.

Due to the death of his grandfather in the spring of 1888, he did not return to school the following fall. Harris soon moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he was apprenticed at a local law firm. After completing his apprenticeship, he studied law at the University of Iowa. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in June 1891. However, for the next five years, he worked odd jobs: for a newspaper as a salesman and a reporter, on fruit farms, as an actor and cowboy, and on cattle ships that traveled to Europe. In 1896, Harris moved to Chicago, eventually settling in the Morgan Park neighborhood, where he lived the rest of his life (except for spending summers in Michigan and winters in Alabama during his later years).

It was 2 July 1910 in Chicago that Harris married Jean Thomson, a Scotswoman whom he had met at a local nature club. Jean traveled the world with Harris in support of Rotary. She helped to make women an important part of Rotary, eventually leading to all Rotary Clubs admitting women as full members. The couple never had any children.

April is Magazine Month, a time to celebrate the global network of Rotary’s official magazines,

which provide valuable information to 1.2 million Rotarians. The Rotary World Magazine Press consists of 32 magazines from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe that inform, inspire, and entertain in 23 languages. In addition to The Rotarian, Rotary’s English-language flagship publication, it offers magazines such as Vida Rotaria (Argentina), Rotary in Bulgaria, and The Rotary-no-Tomo (Japan). The RI Bylaws require all club members to subscribe to The Rotarian or a Rotary regional magazine. Rotary leaders, district governors, and club presidents are encouraged to support magazine editors in their country or region by submitting story ideas, promoting readership, encouraging timely subscription payments, and assisting with other communication efforts. -

Humanitarian news from around the world, with the latest on health, education & poverty. The Rotarian is the official magazine of Rotary International.

Readers of The Rotarian are a selected audience involved in business and the

professions. They include established business leaders who are passionate about changing the world for the better. Many are part of the baby-boomer generation with a disposable income that allows them to spend on family, travel, entertainment, and plenty of hobbies.

The magazine features articles on business, travel, health, education, the environment, management and ethics, sports, and adventure.

The Rotarian challenges its readers to become more involved in service to their neighborhoods and to the global community by establishing a context for Rotary’s initiatives in polio eradication, disease prevention, maternal and child health, literacy, peace and conflict resolution, economic development, and clean water.

Our readers are members of Rotary International, a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace all across the globe. Approximately 1.2 million members, called Rotarians, belong to more than 34,000 Rotary clubs worldwide.

Regional magazines

More than half of Rotarians worldwide receive a regional magazine instead of The Rotarian. These publications are produced independently by Rotarians, distributed in more than 130 countries, and published in 24 languages. They have a combined circulation of 872,000. Each magazine has a regional point of view but also includes articles and photographs of international interest from The Rotarian.

In addition, Rotary International publishes Rotary Canada, a quarterly supplement to The Rotarian with a circulation of 28,000.
