Meditative Walking Prayers at the Labyrinth Sunday, October 29 | 5:00 pm | Sanctuary
As All Saint's Day approaches, you are invited to walk this sacred path to experience how your walking meditation clears your mind and gives you insight into your spiritual journey to be closer to Christ.
As you stand on holy ground, you are “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. [ . . .] let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith . . .” (Hebrews 12:1-2, from the Jesus Calling Journal). Come and be still in the presence of the Lord.
The labyrinth will be available in the sanctuary through the last Sunday in November when we will have the annual Holiday Remembrance service at the labyrinth on Sunday, November 26, at 5:00 pm. You may gain access to the labyrinth during the week by picking up a key from the receptionist downstairs in the sanctuary during business hours—Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm—then return the key when finished. All Saints Day at St. Matt ’s: Morten Lauridsen ’s Lux Aeterna November 5 | 10:30 am | Sanctuary
Mark your calendars for the Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen, which will be sung during the regular sections of our mass. The Kyrie and Sanctus are from Messe Solennelle, Op. 16 by Louis Vierne. Lauridsen composed the requiem Lux Aeterna in 1997, the year his mother died. She was the muse who introduced him to music, playing swing jazz and singing to him as a toddler.
The five movements of Lux Aeterna are based on various references to light from sacred Latin texts: perpetual light, light risen in the darkness, Redeemer-born light from light, light of the Holy Spirit, light of hearts, most blessed light, eternal light—all supporting an earthbound spirit seeking not only mercy, understanding, and consolation but also renewal. Lauridsen uses the beginning and ending of the traditional Requiem Mass to open and close Lux Aeterna.
In short, Lux Aeterna is a beautiful, haunting piece that suits an All Saints worship service. We hope that you’ll join us!

The Rev. John McMullen takes over the teaching duties—for a limited time only—sharing with us his experiences in, and knowledge of, the Methodist Church. The October 30 class will be on Methodist and Episcopal Worship: similarities and differences.
For the month of November, the Rev. Merrill Wade will lead a Four Week Read-Through of the New Testament Book of the Acts of the Apostles. All classes begin at noon, last one hour, and are held in Room B-18 in the basement of the Sanctuary. Bibles are provided but you should bring your Bible if you prefer. Helping Our Neighbors (HON)—Homeless Outreach in Northwest Austin Saturday, November 11 | 5:00 pm | Body Business
Friends, for those of you interested in participating, however much or little, in the ministry to help our homeless neighbors in Northwest Hills, here are some opportunities for service:
Johanne Ibsen Wolford, the HON coordinator has arranged an event on November 11, 2017 at 5:00 pm at Body Business at 2700 W. Anderson Lane at which our homeless friends can shower, receive free hair cuts, as well as food, new clothing, and a dinner. Help is needed at the event and in advance. We have started an “Angels for Homeless” list for people who are interested in helping intermittently with particular needs of homeless neighbors. We will send out occasional emails to our list of Angels and if you are in a position to help on partic-ular needs at that time, please let us know and we will coordinate pick up and deliver. Women’s Story Circle—Ganne McCullough, speaker: “God’s Hand On My Journey” Sunday, November 5 | After the 10:30 am services | Huffman Hall
Although Ganne McCullough has been an Episcopalian all her life, she’s relatively new to St. Matthew’s, having been a mem-ber for slightly less than two years. In that short time, however, Ganne has become very active in the St. Matt’s community. In all she does, Ganne’s positive, outgoing personality is evident.
As suggested by the title she has given her talk, “God’s Hand On My Journey,” Ganne has faced significant challenges in her life. She’ll share some of them with us as she tells about her reliance on God’s guidance through everything she has faced, including her 23-year teaching career in Houston’s inner city, and her work in AA and as a Certified Drug Counselor.
We will meet in Huffman Hall for lunch and Ganne’s story after the 10:30 am service on November 5. Advance reservations are tremendously helpful; thanks to last month’s generosity, lunch is $7/person. So long as most do make reservations, we will be able to continue to invite those whose schedules may have opened up at the last minute. Accordingly, we urge you to contact the church office as soon as possible to make your reservation by phone (512-345-8314) or email ([email protected]). Child care is available, but must be prearranged with reservations.

This will be helpful as St Matthew’s develops its 2018 vision statement. Al Rodriguez is Adjunct Faculty Instructor & Interim Director of Latino/Hispanic Studies at the Seminary of the Southwest; former rector of St John’s Episcopal Church in Austin, and one of the principal founders of El Buen Samaritano, the Episcopal human needs ministry in South Austin.

Complete the process with your payment information and your gift will be made. Gift acknowledgment will not change—just the ease with which you may give.

Annual Thanksgiving Feast at St. Matthew’s
It’s that time of year again—time to give thanks for all that we have, and share a meal with members of St. Matthew’s and the surrounding community. This year, we are honored to welcome several guests, who are recently housed neighbors in our community, to our Thanksgiving dinner. They’ve been provided a stable home through the efforts of the Helping Our Neighbors (HON) group described elsewhere in the Weekly Word. We look forward to sharing a meal and conversations with them, alongside our church families and friends.
We will gather on Thursday, November 23, at about 1:00 pm., eat around 2:00 pm., and be finished by about 4:00 pm. You can cook at home and bring it, or cook it there; whatever suits your fancy. Everyone is welcome: kids, singles, couples, families, groups—the more, the merrier! The Pantry is bare, we need your care!
There’s been a high demand for items at the Caritas Food Pantry this week so please help us to replenish their stock by bringing one non-perishable food item with you to church on Sunday.
They are either completely out of or critically low on the following items:
Cereals Peanut butter
Pasta Pasta sauces (in cans or plastic bottles only please)
Canned ham Canned pork and beans
Cooking oil Canned fruit
Hamburger/Tuna Helper meals
Canned veggies (peas, spinach, mixed vegetables, carrots, beets)
Right now they have plenty of soups, tuna, and black beans.
This week’s item for our St. Matt’s Children for Caritas Children program is chocolate syrup.
There is also a need for toothpaste, shampoo, bar soap and shaving cream.
If you’d like to contribute toward the purchase of perishable food items for the pantry, please leave a $1.00 or more in the money box on the table in the Caritas Corner of the Commons.

Offshoots Small Groups
Offshoots small groups are a chance for parishioners to share our passions with one another and our neighbor. This initia-tive grows out of the idea that wherever Christians are present, the body of Christ is revealed. So have some fun with these groups, get to know your fellow parishioners, and invite a friend to “come and see” a little glimpse of the Kingdom. Children’s & Youth Sunday Morning Formation
The Family Ministry Team has an exciting season of programming planned for this autumn. Susan and Travis will be offering a kid-friendly curriculum on health and wellness designed to dovetail with our adult programming for this fall. Continuing through the fall, we’ll be basing our gatherings on the Living Compass curriculum, “outfitting individuals, families, congrega-tions, and organizations with tools and training for the journey toward wellness and wholeness.” Our community as a whole will congregate Sunday mornings at 9:15 am in Huffman Hall; and children and youth will then break off for age-appropriate lessons on “Heart, Soul, Strength & Mind.”
Children's Choir Wants YOU!—Will Not Meet Sunday, October 29 Due to Trunk or Treat
St. Matthews children's choir meets every Sunday during the Sunday school hour (9:15-10:15 am) in the choir room!
We are now planning ahead for Advent and Christmas. The children will sing for the service of Lessons and Carols on December 3 and for the Family Christmas Eve service.

Looking for a fun weekend activity with your family? Hiking, games, s’mores, fellowship, and more! St. Matthew’s has re-served multiple cabins/campsites. We hope you will join us. $125 for cabin and $75 for tent camping, includes all food and activities for the trip! If you prefer to just come out and join us for a meal, that works too! Trunk or Treat
Sunday, October 29 | 9:15 - 10:15 am (during the Sunday School hour)
We are currently looking for families to host a trunk so that children can play a game at your car and win a prize/candy.
Trunks don’t have to be super fancy and the Family Ministry team is happy to help with theme suggestions. This is a low-key
fellowship opportunity for all. Everyone dresses up for Halloween, plays games, and then worships together (in costume) in
the Family Service at 10:30 am. Tons of fun for the whole family!

All Youth—join Travis for an hour of Halloween fun at the Youth Center; then carpool over to Soul of a Musician for a family-friendly music event & costume party. Wear costumes & bring some sweets to share. We’ll meet in the Youth Center 4:00-5:30 pm, then carpool to Soul. Parents, if you would like to assist with rides and then join us at Soul for a whole-family event, we’d love that!

PNO—Parents’ Night Out Fall Schedule
St. Matthew’s offers Parents’ Night Out, a fun night for kiddos so that parents can have an evening out—once a month, guaranteed! We play with the children, create arts/crafts, watch a movie, etc. It is simple: make a reservation with Susan Goodman at [email protected] and bring a peanut-free dinner for your child(ren). Personal prayer teams are available during communion at the 10:30 ser-vice in the sanctuary. We have a prayer station on the west side in the gallery. All prayer requests and discussions are completely confidential.
Home delivery of communion is available if you are unable to come to church and would like Holy Communion brought to you on Sunday, please call the church office at 512-345-8314.
If you are unable to walk to the altar for holy communion today, please notify an usher and the communion elements will be brought to you where you are seated.
