OBJECTIVES

The students of standard 4 will be able to:

Label, explain and know the four stages of a

butterfly’s life cycle:

1.) Egg Stage

2.) Larva Stage

3.) Pupa Stage

4.) Adult Stage

Understand the life cycle of a butterfly.

Let’s

Learn

SCIENCE!

Page 5: The life cycle of a butterfly

The Egg StageIn the egg stage, a female butterfly lays its eggs on

the underside of a leaf.

This leaf will later serve as a source of food when

the larva hatches. Butterfly eggs can hatch in a

few days, a few weeks, or may require months.

STAGE 1

Page 6: The life cycle of a butterfly

The Larva StageIn the larva stage, the eggs hatch and out comes

a caterpillar. It eats leaves and molts (sheds its skin) many times

as it grows.

STAGE 2

The Pupa StageSTAGE 3

In the Pupa Stage, the caterpillar fastens its body to

a leaf or twig with silk.

The caterpillar’s skin begins to harden into a

chrysalis. The chrysalis is very hard and many

changes take place inside.

The body turns to a soft liquid. The wings, legs,

and rest of the butterfly are formed from the liquid.

STAGE 4 The AdultFinally, at this stage a fully-grown adult

butterfly emerges from the pupa.

At this stage, the butterfly gets no bigger, they

are reproductive and mobile. The adults

undergo courtship, mating, and egg-laying.

WAYS OF INTEGRATION

In a Science lesson under the topic, the life cycle of a butterfly

I would use the PowerPoint Presentation to easily capture students’

attention, deliver specific information and to cater for the visual

learners in the class. After, the use of these slides students would

be able to decode and encode information accurately.

Page 10: The life cycle of a butterfly

Decoding Activity

I would use the PowerPoint Presentation to teach

the topic and after using these PowerPoint slides, I

would allow the students to have discussions

among themselves about the life cycle of a

butterfly.

Page 11: The life cycle of a butterfly

Encoding Activity

After the Power Point presentation and discussions

students are to use either Microsoft Word, Power

Point or freehand drawings and create either a comic

strip, poster or painting describing each of the phase

in a butterfly’s life cycle.
