November 23 marks the last Sunday on the 2014 Christian Calendar. On that day the Church celebrates Christ the King Sunday. That Sunday completes the annual Christian journey through the life of Jesus Christ on earth, the celebration of which was begun last year on December 1, 2013. On that day, the first Sunday of the Season of Advent, we began preparing for the birth of Jesus even as we looked forward to Christ’s coming again in glory!
On the Reign of Christ Sunday, Christians recognize and worship Christ as King of heaven and earth for all time without challenge and without end. Though kings are absolute rulers who attain power by raising and leading armies into war against other countries, Jesus' war was not against people or against a country, but against sin, death, and the power of evil. Through his death, resurrection, and ascension, Christ Jesus fulfilled God’s commitment to all creation, promising that the powers of evil would be crushed (Genesis 3:14-15) and the works of the devil would be destroyed (First John 3:8b). God demonstrated that God is who God says God is, and God can and will do what God says God can and will do. In Christ God made good on God’s commitment. In fact it is God’s nature to do so.
We human beings on the other hand struggle with commitment; in fact, sadly to some it is a word never spoken. To commit to doing something is not what we are willing to do. Culturally, less and less people are willing to make a commitment to another person, to a group of people, to a church, or even to a nation.
Of commitment, Merriam Webster’s Online Dictionary offers these definitions: a promise to do or give something; a promise to be loyal to someone or something, and the attitude of someone who works very hard to do or support something. If we were to express commitment’s meaning through the use of other words we might use fidelity, constancy, dedication, devotedness, faithfulness, fealty, allegiance, loyalty, or steadfastness, to name a few. Commitment is far from disloyalty, faithlessness, infidelity, and treachery.
When we say we commit to doing something we are saying we will definitely “do” that something, obligating ourselves to do it deliberately. In other words to commit means we pledge ourselves to carry into action that to which we bind ourselves. If we say we are making a commitment, then we are pledging to accomplish, perform, follow through with that to which we are committed.
There are members and friends of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church who demonstrate by their presence and actions that they are committed to Jesus Christ and the work of this church. At some point and time they plucked up the courage and the resolve to say to God, or to another person, or to a small group of people that they were making a commitment to participate in the life of this church and now they are making good on their promises. I give thanks to God for each and all of them!
To anyone who is unsure about taking that step privately or publically let me encourage you to “take the leap.” I can assure you that there is a spiritual shift that occurs in relationships where commitment is made and then honored. Places within that are weak are made strong. Fears suddenly take a backseat to bravery. Time which seemed scarce is made sufficient. Talents which were not yet discerned become apparent.
As we prepare to enter a new year in the life of the church may we all pause and consider our commitment to God, to the church and to one another. My door is always open if you want to talk or pray. In Christ’s Joy, ~Rev. Mary D

Dear Church Family,
What a wonderful church family, and amazing God
we have!!! I would like to thank you for all the calls,
cards, food, e-mails, but most for the prayers. I am
healing slowly, but praise God, I am healing. I am
walking with a walker at this time, but hopefully, I
will start with a cane soon. I can’t wait until I can
walk by myself, and get back to church. Keep me still
in your prayers.
Love to you all,
Jeanette

Thanksgiving Contributed by Doyle Lewis
We get together this time of year with family and friends to give thanks for God’s blessings. But, for many of us, this year was marked by sadness. Often in the bad times, we fail to recognize God’s hand of blessing. We focus on the negatives and let them pull us down. At times we may not even see any positives in our situation. God always gives blessings even though they may not be readily seen. I would like you to try to find things to be thankful for every day of the year. See God’s hand at work in your life and thank Him. Remember that daily He gives multiple blessings. Life has it’s difficulties, but focus on the load of blessings that surround you and thank God for them. Remember, a thankful heart is a joyful heart!
Collections and Attendance information is published in each Sunday’s bulletin so that the congregation is kept informed of the church’s financial condition. Below is the chart included in the bulletin with explanations for each item:
