The Liberty Flyer
News from the PTA for September 2012
Are you ready? We are! The school kits are distributed, the Teacher Welcome Back Lunch was a success, the Spirit wear design [p9] for Fall is chosen, the PTA Calendar [p6] is set and we are ready to roll. Or maybe I should say glide. Our Sept. Event is Liberty Skate Night at Ashburn Ice House [p10] from 7:40-8:40 PM on Sat., Sept. 22nd. Grab your gloves, helmets always encouraged, and meet up for an hour of ice-skating. Last year I asked for just one (1) thing – Join PTA! We had such a great response (Thank you!) that this year I have two (2) requests:
# 1 Join PTA! Your $10 goes a long way to making Liberty the best it can be. $20 for both Mom & Dad to join goes twice as far. [p3] # 2 Be involved. Find a way to be involved at your child(ren)’s school [p5]. I look forward to seeing you at school or a PTA Event soon!

Interested in a leadership position within the PTA? We still need leaders for the following positions: • Assemblies Co-Chair – We have an Administrator taking the lead. We need a Parent to assist with choosing and coordinating in-school assemblies. • Beautification Co-Chair – We have an enthusiastic lead, but this is a two-person job. Do you have a green thumb or an interest in taking the Liberty landscape to the next level? This is the position for you. • Dads Club – We have a great program in mind to increase male-involvement at our school. We need a lead. We would like it to be a Dad that has an enthusiasm to bring other Dads into our school for the benefit of our students. Can you be our POC? • Grandparent’s Day Chair – We are seeking out a grandparent that will bring ideas to the table to enrich the lives of our students with involvement from every generation. • MSAAC – We need a Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee Rep. to attend monthly
meetings (likely 3rd Wed.) at the LCPS Admin. Bldg. and report back to us at the Gen. PTA meetings and via this Newsletter. • Odyssey of the Mind Coordinator – Our past Coordinator has moved up to an Exec. Bd. Position of OM. We need someone to “lead the charge” of “thinking outside the box” here at Liberty. This is a hugely popular program that can only work with a Coordinator and many, many coaches volunteering their time. • Reflections Chair – We need a leader to maintain this wonderful “arts” program that is promoted by National PTA. • SEAC Rep. – The Representative attends a monthly meeting on our behalf. The Special Education Advisory Committee meets (generally) on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. • BINGO Chair – We have a general plan (of “B is for Bingo”). We need a Chair. This is a great Event for a “newbie” volunteer to lead (with tons of support). • Fall Fest Leads – We need a POC for the entire event and also leads for Prizes, Games and Food. • Staff Game – Now a tradition at Liberty, all we need is a head cheerleader to coordinate this multi-faceted Event. Contact Chris Jackson-Coates, VP Committees, to volunteer to lead. [email protected]

Membership Goals for 2012-‐13
Our final PTA membership tally for last year was 681 members. VA PTA President, Anne Carson, has challenged us with a 5% membership increase, which would be 716 members. We have increased membership each and every year and a 5% increase is a realistic goal. Our ultimate goal is 100% membership (or the equivalent of 1 parent or teacher member for each student enrolled on the first day of class). That would be over 1,000 members. Let aim for the top goal! Join PTA today and help us reach our membership goals for 2012-‐13. Volunteers Needed
The Liberty PTA events and activities are only possible with the help of our Liberty parents and guardians. The donation of your time and talent is the only way to keep our events going, which in turn keeps our programs funded. Be a special part of your child’s life and show them the difference volunteering can make. With your help, we can make this school the best it can be. We will have a raffle
each month and your name could be picked from the volunteer sign-in book for a surprise prize! To volunteer, contact Anaheeta C. Minwalla, [email protected]. After School Enrichment (ASE) Be sure to check your child's backpack on September 6th to find out what exciting ASE programs Liberty will be offering. These programs will be held for nine (9) weeks on an assigned day after school until 3:40pm. We will bring a variety of programs encompassing physical education, music, arts, and academics. There will be one fall session beginning Sept. 24th and one winter session set to begin January 7th. Any questions or suggestions, please contact Emily Parker at: [email protected]. Shout Outs
Our PTA members were hard at work this summer before the doors even opened for the students. A big Shout-‐Out goes to: Beth Choi, Emily Parker, and Tom Parker for conducting the PTA audit; and Rebekah Cox for serving as PTA Treasurer for the past two years. James Milam & Laura Tubridy for coordinating the building of benches for the Outdoor Classroom; thanks to James, Laura, Michael Tubridy, and Tom Corej for putting the benches together. Anaheeta Minwalla for recruiting volunteers to stuff the First Day Packets.

Thank you for your time! First Day Packet Stuffers/Student Mailout: Angie McKinney, Anne Corej, Gina Fink, Heather Tavares, Kimberley Turner, Kristen Reed, Lynn Hood, Melody Judge, Sarah Welz, Uma Murali and Vivienne Woon. Beth Cattafesta, Lynn Hood, and Melinda Mansfield for their hard work in coordinating the Teacher Welcome Luncheon. Thank Dr. Cattafesta for sponsoring the luncheon!
Lisa Strother for her time and effort in organizing all for the School Supply Kits. Thank you for your “heavy lifting”! School Kit Volunteers: Angie McKinney, Anne Corej, Beverly Weatherly, Julie Abel, Justin Abel, Kelly Gray, Kristen Reed, Laura Szczybor, Melissa Abel, Michael Corej and Vonetta Brown.
Thanks to all! If we inadvertently missed adding your name, please know that we appreciated your help! Shout Outs! will be a standard part of our newsletter used as a way to recognize the hard work, effort, and time that our members dedicate to bring us the great programs and events that enhance our school. If you know of a PTA member that deserves a Shout-‐Out, please email Taryn Henderson at [email protected] so we can include them. We will publish “shout-‐outs” in the newsletter for the month following the activity.
Thank you Dr. Atwater and Mr. Thiessen! As the new school year begins, we are saddened that Dr. Atwater and Mr. Thiessen are not with us. We are very happy for them as they are moving forward in their careers but they will be missed at Liberty. The PTA thanks both of them for all their support, hard work, and dedication to the students. Eagle Sponsor -‐ Kravitz Orthodontics www.kravitzorthodontics.com A huge thank you to Kravitz Orthodontics for sponsoring the daily planners for welcome back gifts for the teachers and staff.
Fall Fundraiser
We have partnered with Classic Cookie for our Fall Fundraising!
Our goal is to raise $10,000 from sales
and direct donations!
Kick-off is Friday, September 21, 2012. Students will collect cuddly critter key chains for every 10 items sold. Don’t want cookies, candies & candles? No problem! We encourage you to participate in our fall fundraiser by making a direct donation. Your child will be eligible for fundraising prizes. To meet our goal, we are suggesting a donation of $20 per student. If you have any questions contact Anaheeta C. Minwalla, VP Fundraising [email protected]

Link Your Store Cards
Help us earn money for Liberty with your retail purchases! Make sure to designate Liberty Elementary School as the beneficiary for your Food Lion (formerly Bloom), Giant, and Harris Teeter shoppers' cards. You can also link your Target REDcard. If you don't have a Target card, now is a great time to sign up for one. These generous businesses donate a percentage of your purchases to our school. You need to link your Giant and Harris Teeter cards to our school each year. Even if you designated Liberty last year, you need to designate Liberty again this year. If you have a Bloom card, please stop by Food Lion and their customer service representative will help you switch over to the MVP card. Go to the PTA Website and click on the PTA - Fundraisers Link for all the details. Make sure to use the Liberty codes: • Food Lion Code - 219445 • Giant Code - 05654 • Harris Teeter Code -7219
• Target Code - 149682
Spiritwear
Our Fall Spiritwear sale will be from Sept. 13th through Friday, Sept. 28th. The options are a navy zipper hooded sweatshirt, a gray hooded sweatshirt, pink or blue camo shirts, a long-sleeve navy shirt or a short-sleeve red shirt. We think the logo (above) rocks! Look for the order form in your September 13th Thursday folder! Patriot Day
Liberty students will celebrate Patriot Day on Sept. 11th with an 8AM Assembly. If you or a member of your family is serving in the military or a veteran and would like to participate and be recognized, we would be honored. Please contact Assistant Principal Diane Insari, [email protected], and let her know of your interest and availability.

Room Parent Orientation Room Parent Orientation will be held in the cafeteria on Sept. 11th from 9-10 am. We ask those parents who will be serving as Room Parents join us for juice and muffins and a quick run down of the “rules” along with time for sharing “great ideas” for classroom celebrations. POC: Taryn Henderson at [email protected]. Volunteer Training Volunteer training, especially for those who will “need to know” how to work the various machines (copier, etc.) will be held on Monday, Sept. 17th at 9AM.
